Roan, known for chart-hits like ‘Pink Pony Club’ and her charismatic public presence, announced in an Instagram statement that she is “no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman.” She framed the decision not only as a professional one but a moral one too, emphasising that “no artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values.” Roan added that artists deserve representation that “aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity,” and that meaningful change in the industry depends on accountability and trustworthy leadership. 

The controversy is based on Casey Wasserman’s appearance in a number of related to Jeffrey Epstein and his close associate Ghislaine Maxwell. The released files include emails exchanged between Wasserman and Maxwell in the early 2000s, before her conviction in the Epstein sex-trafficking case. Though Wasserman has strongly denied any personal or business relationship with Epstein and has apologized for the correspondence.

For Roan, the decision to leave appears rooted first in her concern for her team. “I hold my teams to the highest standards and have a duty to protect them,” she wrote, expressing gratitude for the agents and staff who have worked with her while making clear her unwillingness to “passively stand by” amid the controversy.

Others in the music community have also voiced discontent, with people like Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast and indie act Wednesday calling for changes in leadership or opting out of the agency entirely. Some agents within Wasserman have reportedly even sought to buy out the music division or urged Wasserman to step down as CEO.

In what has been described by the festival boss Melvin Benn as the “first pure pop headliner”, all eyes were on Chappell Roan – and those eyes never left her gaze due to the enchanting and cinematic performance.

The pop sensation strutted onto stage while a haunting, atmospheric and ghastly instrumental gave the pink cowboy hat-wearing crowd a taste of the vibe for the next 90 minutes – a perfect juxtaposition.

She then burst into the anthemic ‘Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl’ which set a precedent for the rest of the show – a precedent of community within the crowd as Roan and the packed festival-goers belted out chorus after chorus, arm-in-arm, with ‘Hot To Go’ being the epitome of it all.

Multiple times throughout the night, Roan spoke to the tens of thousands in attendance to exclaim just how important the night was to her: “This is a dream come true, seriously. Thank you for loving me and standing with me. I’m truly so grateful” she told the crowd before belting into ‘Kaleidoscope’.

NME gave the ‘Hot To Go’ singer a five-star review for her Reading Festival headline debut, saying: “She wraps things up with a euphoric trifecta of ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, ‘My Kink Is Karma’ and ‘Pink Pony Club’, she struts down the runway to get closer to the crowd, waving and blowing kisses to them, a big grin on her face. 

She might be getting used to seeing scenes like  the one in front of her now, but it’s clear they’ve yet to lose their impact.”

Reading and Leeds Festival boss, Melvin Benn, spoke to NME earlier this year about having Chappell Roan headline this year: “To have a weekend with historic headline moments like Chappell Roan, alongside emerging talent and influential voices, I am proud of R&L’s continued development and I can’t wait to see fans embracing it all.”

Benn also spoke about the significance of finally having a pop star headline the festivals, saying: “It’s something that I’ve talked to the team about a huge amount over the last 18 months to two years; the pre-eminence of pop now is there for all to see. There’s been a shift in the young audiences loving pop, and R&L has to take notice of that. Chappell Roan is that genuine pop headliner.”

Chappell Roan will now head north to take the main stage at Leeds Festival tonight (August 23) in what is sure to be just as enchanting and anthemic as last night.

Released in 2020 via Atlantic Records, the track marked the third single of Roan’s critically acclaimed debut LP ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’. Despite being a fan favourite, the track fell short of receiving early commercial success, trailing behind the ‘Casual’ singer’s other prominent tracks ‘HOT TO GO!’, ‘Red Wine Supernova’ and ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, with the latter peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart.

The Missouri performer’s rise to fame has been remarkable. With almost a decade in the industry, Roan’s late-bloomed commercial success has proven the appeal of her hyper-pop, camp anthems which detail the experiences of queer individuals acknowledging and proudly owning their identities.

Adopting a drag-inspired persona, otherwise known as Chappell Roan, to exhibit her powerful lyricism alongside funky pop backdrops; the singer has always talked highly of drag culture in influencing her artistry, from her visual aesthetic to her sonic development. When speaking to BBC Radio 1 last May about her biggest inspiration, the 27-year-old stated: “No one performs better than a drag queen! They push me to go bigger with my outfits, go bolder with my lyrics. Just kind of like the humour behind pop music [and] behind drag are very similar. So, drag queens are my biggest inspiration, burlesque dancers… just any kind of that really outrageous spectacle”.

‘Pink Pony Club’ delves into the protagonist’s experience (potentially Roan’s) of moving from the Midwest to LA and discovering the bodacious and vibrant gay nightlife within the city. The protagonist becomes a dancer for a West Hollywood club, against the wishes or her mother and those in her hometown. The now Number 1 track captivatingly portrays Roan’s fiercely bold persona, one of which has established the singer as a powerful sapphic symbol, promoting both vulnerability and confidence in her queerness and inspiring thousands of listeners alike.

The synth-pop track has achieved heightened attention following Roan placing ‘Pink Pony Club’ at the forefront of her recent musical appearances. The Midwest Princess recently performed the song at the 2025 Grammy Awards, the same ceremony which saw her win Best New Artist.

Even across the pond in the UK, Roan has received a surge in popularity, earning herself two BRIT Awards, one for International Artist of the Year and the other for International Song of the Year for her track ‘Good Luck, Babe!’. A special vinyl reissue celebrating the 30th anniversary of ‘Whatever‘ is currently on track to reclaim the top spot. Originally released on December 18, 1994, the non-album single previously peaked at number three.

However, Liam and Noel Gallagher still face tough competition. Last week’s chart leader, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’, is trailing by just 500 chart units (number two), while Chappell Roan’s ‘Pink Pony Club’ remains a strong contender at number three.

Currently, Lamar‘s ‘Not Like Us‘ is topping the charts for the first time, having charted at number two last week, after a long climb that peaked after the artist’s much acclaimed Super Bowl Half time Show. It is the artist’s first song to achieve the number one position in the UK, after two albums have also claimed number one, most recently his latest release titled ‘GNX‘.

Chappell Roan‘s ‘Pink Pony Club‘ has also been climbing charts, and it has to yet to achieve the number one position. It debuted in mid-September of last year and currently the number three position is the highest it has ever been. If it achieved the number one position, it would mark the artist’s first song to ever do so, after ‘Good Luck Babe’ peaked at number two last year. ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess‘, Chappell Roan’s debut album, has spent various non-consecutive weeks at number one.

Currently, Official Charts predicts Oasis’s ‘Whatever’ as number one, ‘Not Like Us’ by Lamar at number two, Chappell Roan at number three, Lady Gaga with ‘Abracadabra‘ at number four, and Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ at number five. They also predict that chart topper ‘Messy’, currently charting at number two, will fall off the charts at the tenth position.

Furthermore, American singer Tate McRae could see a significant boost following the release of ‘So Close to What’. Her track ‘sports car‘ is on course to reach a new peak inside the Top 10 at number six, while ‘Revolving Door’ is set for a strong debut in the Top 20 at number seventeen.

Sam Fender’s ‘People Watching‘ is expected to re-enter the Top 10 after the release of his highly anticipated third album. Meanwhile, ‘Arm’s Length’ could climb higher, currently charting at number 13, and ‘Little Bit Closer’ is poised to make its chart debut. Official Charts has named Fender’s latest release the album with the biggest opening of the year with only a few days of tracking.

Another new entry to charts is expected to be Selena Gomez’s collaboration with fiancé Benny Blanco and rising pop star Gracie Abrams, ‘Call Me When You Break Up’, which is projected to debut on charts this week, marking Selena’s first Top 20 single in six years.

Abrams’s ‘That’s So True‘, which charted last week as number three has fallen to the fourteenth position, while ‘Apt’ by Rosé and Bruno Mars currently charts at number eight. While we predicted last week that Lady Gaga’s ‘Abracadabra’ would challenge Young’s ‘Messy’ for number one, the America Singer has yet to climb to that position and currently charts at number three.

1. Lola Young – ‘Messy‘

It is British pop sensation Lola Young’s fourth week as number one, after climbing charts for ten weeks. The song originally debuted at number 87, weeks after it was released on streaming platforms; its success is mainly to be attributed to its popularity on the TikTok platform, where it went viral last year. It is the artist’s first and only song to achieve the number one position, as well as her first song to ever chart.

2. Kendrick Lamar – ‘Not Like Us‘

Lamar’s latest album, ‘GNX‘, debuted at number one in the UK upon its release. ‘Not Like Us’ originally debuted on UK charts in May of last year at number 10 and eventually fell out of the top 20, charting at 94 two weeks ago. But with Lamar’s recent (and widely discussed) Super Bowl halftime performance, the song has once again climbed charts.

3. Lady Gaga – ‘Abracadabra‘

Last week, we had predicted that Gaga’s spell with ‘Abracadabra’ would claim the number one position over Young’s ‘Messy’, since it has debuted at number six with only a couple days of chart units. However, ‘Abracadabra’  has still to climb a couple positions before it can mark the artist’s fifth number one song.

4. Chappell Roan – ‘Pink Pony Club‘

After 13 weeks charting in the UK, this is ‘Pink Pony Club’s peak. The song was originally released in 2023, but it gained more and more popularity throughout the past year when Chappell Roan’s debuted album ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess‘ peaked at number one. If the song managed to climb up the charts and reach number one, it would mark the artist’s first song to achieve the position.

5. Chrystal – ‘The Days‘

‘The Days’ is Chrystal’s first song to make it on the UK’s Official Songs Charts. It debuted at number 96 in late 2024 and has since been climbing up the charts, peaking at number four for three consecutive weeks. The song was originally released on TikTok, where it gained world wide attention.

Chappell Roan’s debut album has made numbers in the UK and around the world after a few of her songs started gaining popularity online. The album was originally released in late 2023, and it took a couple months to debut on UK charts; it first appeared in the top 100 in April of 2024 at number 68 and slowly made its way up the charts finally reaching the top twenty in July. Ever since, the album has become a charts staple and has spent 40 weeks in the top 100, 31 of which were in the top ten.

It previously peaked at number one in August, spending one week topping charts. Last week, we saw the album charting at number seven: this week’s jump is due to a new vinyl edition being released, which not only pushed the album to number one on charts but also sent it straight to number on Official Vinyl Charts, where it had previously peaked at number one multiple times.

Chappell Roan’s first single to appear on the UK Singles Chart was ‘Good Luck Babe’, which now counts more than a billion streams on Spotify. The song peaked at number two and has, so far, spent 41 weeks on charts. Off of her debut album, ‘Casual’, ‘Hot to Go’, ‘Pink Pony Club’ and ‘Red Wine Supernova’ have also appeared on charts, with ‘Hot To Go’ peaking at number four.

Chappell Roan’s popularity has risen drastically after she was featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk YouTube segment, where her vocal skills and personality were highlighted and her talent became a viral sensation.

Chappell Roan has previously visited the UK on a sold-out tour which took her to London, Manchester and Glasgow. In the summer, she will perform at Leeds and Reading festival alongside Hozier, Travis Scott and Bring Me The Horizon. She is also a strong candidate for Glastonbury Festival, whose line-up is set to be released in the upcoming months.

While the artist has hinted at new music quite a few times since her debut album has brought her new levels of fame, she has yet to confirm whether a new album will be coming out in 2025.

Earlier this year, Chappell Roan was named BBC’s Sound of 2025 winner.

Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, this recognition marks the culmination of her long musical journey. The 26-year-old artist faced a major setback during the pandemic when she was dropped by her first label, Atlantic Records, after her single, ‘Pink Pony Club’, underperformed commercially.

The song has since become one of her most iconic pieces, and signalled a shift toward a more theatrical, danceable sound rooted in camp and queer culture. 

Inspired by the singer’s first visit to a gay club in Los Angeles, the track reflects Roan’s personal transformation. Born in Missouri, in a devout Christian household, she attended church three times a week and grew up believing that “being gay was as bad as a sin” but has come to embrace her identity and is a proud advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

The club visit also inspired her bold stage persona Chappell Roan, whom she describes as a “larger-than-life, drag queen version of myself”.

As a result, her artistry and performances are unapologetically theatrical and incorporate themes of self-discovery and empowerment, resonating with fans worldwide. Her music – a vibrant blend of pop infused with 1980s synth pop and 2000s nostalgia – is characterised by emotional depth, infectious melodies, and dynamic energy.

‘The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess’. went on to be nominated for Album of the Year for the 2025 Grammy Awards, and was followed by the release of her single ‘Good Luck, Babe’, which recounts her experience of falling in love with her best friend.

Speaking to the BBC about the song, Roan said: “It’s a pop song with a sad element to it. It’s very common in queer relationships, when someone is still coming to terms with their queerness, [that] they’ll kiss 100 boys to ‘stop the feeling’, as the song says.”

Her breakout year was capped by a show-stopping performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she also won the award for Best New Artist.

Sheeran does it again, releasing a collection of his biggest hits included in the set list of his record-breaking ‘Mathematics’ Tour which will resume this January in Asia and make its way back to Europe in the summer. The album debuted at number five and has spent 14 weeks in the UK top ten, peaking at number one for the first time this week. It marks Sheeran’s eight album to achieve this milestone, fourteen years after ‘+‘ had first reached the position.

2. Sabrina Carpenter – ‘Short n Sweet‘

We’re now used to seeing Carpenter dominating charts after she created new records with the singles off ‘Short n Sweet‘, which have altogether spent more than twenty weeks at number one. ‘Short n Sweet‘, released last August, has spent nineteen weeks charting and has never left the top three! It debuted at number one, where it spent two non-consecutive weeks. It is Carpenter’s first album to achieve the UK top ten and her sixth studio album overall.

3. SZA – ‘SOS‘

SZA’s highly anticipated second studio album, ‘SOS‘ was released in December 2022 and debuted at number two. It has spent 108 weeks in the top 100, recently making a big comeback in the top 10 thanks to the deluxe version ‘Lana‘ being released. It’s a big accomplishment for a second album, considering her debut ‘CTRL‘ had only peaked 45, and ‘SOS‘ will perhaps climb to number one once the physical copies of the deluxe are released: it will make the artist’s first ever number one album.

4. Chappell Roan – ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess‘

The album spends another 29th week in the UK top ten, charting for an overall of 38. It previously peaked at number one, and it’s Chappell Roan’s first album to do so as well as her first ever album to chart in the UK. The album was originally released in September of 2023, and Official Charts included the artist as one of those whose slow-burn career turned out to be worth it in 2024.

5. Charli xcx – ‘BRAT‘

Another slow-burn career, and the artists behind mxdwn UK’s best song of 2024. ‘BRAT’ debuted at number two and it took the album a good while to achieve the number one position but it eventually did. It has spent an overall of 30 weeks in the top 100 since its debut back in June of last year. It is the artist’s second number one album and her longest charting yet.

6. Elton John – ‘Diamonds‘

The collection of hits has spent 373 weeks in the top 100 since its debut in 2017, peaking at number two in 2023 for two consecutive weeks. British legend Elton John currently has eight albums peaking at number one, and, including ‘Diamonds‘, he has so far spent 1433 weeks charting in the UK top 100.

7. Billie Eilish - ‘Hit Me Hard and Soft‘

The album first appeared on charts in May 2024, with a strong debut at number one. Ever since, it has spent 25 weeks in the top ten and 33 in the top 100. It is Eilish’s third album to peak at number one, her first was back in 2019 when the artist was only 17 and broke the record for the youngest female artist in UK history to achieve a number one album.

8. The Weeknd – ‘The Highlights‘

Another collection album, which has spent 204 weeks charting and has peaked at number two, spending there many non-consecutive weeks. It is the artist’s sixth album to reach the UK top ten, three of which have achieved the number one position.

9. Taylor Swift – ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Swift’s twelfth album to peak at number one and the biggest album of 2024 in the UK. It has spent 37 weeks on charts, ten of which at number one, since its release in April of last year.

10. Fleetwood Mac – ‘Fifty Years – Don’t Stop’

Peaking at number 5 and spending 320 weeks charting, it is the band’s 13th album to reach the UK top ten. It was released to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the band’s creation and includes their biggest hits, including UK number one ‘Albatross’.

In the episode that paid particular attention to the pop queens who were at the forefront of music in 2024; Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, and Chappell Roan, Smith revealed an impressive knowledge to the cultural prominence of these woman within the music industry.

Smith prefaced the conversation with the awareness that it would be “unfair and disingenuous” to claim he had “bought into Brat Summer or Chappell Roan” because it’s not aimed at him. He continued to emphasise that he had been aware of Roan’s work “for a long, long time”, recognising the nature of her almost ‘overnight’ success with her debut album, ‘The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess’, despite Roan being present in the industry for many years.

The podcast’s presenter, Annie Mac went on to ask The Cure frontman if he was aware of a recent incident where Roan called out the behaviour of her fans by posting two videos on TikTok, and how Roan calling out this behaviour marked a wider cultural shift regarding para-social relationships between celebrities and their fans.

Roan declared online back in August: “I don’t want whatever the f*** you think you’re supposed to be entitled to whenever you see a celebrity. I don’t give a f*** if you think its selfish of me to say no for a photo or for your time or for a hug. That’s not normal. That’s weird. It’s weird how people think that you know a person just because you see them online and you listen to the art they make. That’s f***ing weird! I’m allowed to say no to creepy behaviour, ok?”

Smith empathised with Roan: “it’s a tricky one because it’s a complicated subject. I think what you’re doing as an artist, you want people to feel like they’re engaging with you, but it is a modern world phenomenon that there this a sense of entitlement that didn’t used to be there amongst fans.”

As an individual with over four decades worth of experience in the industry, Smith compared Roan’s experience to his own encounters with fans: “When we started out, it was kind of enough, we did what we did, and people didn’t expect more”.

He continued: “whereas now it seems almost like that is part of the deal and as The Cure became more popular, we obviously have experienced quite a lot of obsessive behaviour down the years”.

The ‘Alone’ singer expressed his support to Roan’s comments, recognising the “very strange culture” that encompasses modern fan culture where “obsessive behaviour” is somewhat normalised despite being “quite threatening” to artists.

Smith recognises the difference in The Cure’s and Roan’s emergence to fame, with the latter being more rapid, has exacerbated the difficulties in adjusting to the spotlight, when artists are catapulted into fame almost overnight.
