Celeste has kicked off 2025 with the release of her deeply evocative new single, ‘Everyday’.

The track was originally released as part of Record Store Day last year but has been released on streaming platforms this week. It incorporates her rich, soulful voice and poignant lyrics, for which she is renowned for.

— Celeste (@celeste) April 11, 2024

The British singer-songwriter rose to stardom by uploading demos to SoundCloud where she caught the attention of industry professionals. ‘The Milk & The Honey’, her 2017 debut EP, introduced her as a powerhouse of emotional depth and vocal brilliance. Her career-defining moment came in 2020 when she won the BBC Sound of 2020 and the BRITs Rising Star Award, establishing her as one of the UK’s most promising musical talents.

Hits like ‘Strange’ and her chart-topping debut album ‘Not Your Muse’ solidified her reputation and earned her critical acclaim. Beyond her studio work, Celeste has made significant contributions to film soundtracks, including her Oscar-nominated song ‘Hear My Voice’ from The Trial of the Chicago 7 and ‘This Is Who I Am’ for the Sky series The Day of the Jackal.

This new single, released on January 1, marks a compelling addition to her discography, showcasing her talent for blending classic soul influences with contemporary soundscapes.

In a statement about the song, Celeste revealed the its inspiration, describing an evening at Boiler Room’s Christmas party: “It was December 3rd 2022, I was invited out by friends and didn’t really want to go but had the feeling that I should. I ended up going to Boiler Room’s Christmas party at their office in Bethnal Green, feeling a bit lonely, heartbroken and reluctant to engage in any small talk, or flirtatious conversations.”

She explained: “I went to the dance floor and found myself engulfed in a song that felt familiar but I was unsure if I knew it or where I knew it from. I ended up speaking with a friend while dancing but then what overtook the conversation was a melody in my head and I began to record a voice note on my phone. This rarely happens to me so I felt it was important to gather some documentation of it so went to the smoking area to record a voice note, then the words ‘Everyday, wanna be close to him, never leave’ came to me.”

The singer described the song as one that “speaks of a lust that is uncomfortable and confusing, holding onto wrong mantras and holding lovers in our thoughts almost as a prayer or daily obsession.” Themes which are evident in the tracks emotional and introspective lyrics, revealing a deep need for connection and validation which is juxtaposed with moments of insecurity and doubt.

One of the key elements of the single is its production, which uses a sample from Death In Vegas’ 1999 track ‘Dirge’, giving it a cinematic quality with a hypnotic rhythm. The song gradually builds in texture, starting with the minimalism of the sample and Celeste’s haunting vocals. As the song progresses, layers of bass, synths, percussion, and distant vocal echoes grow before exploding in a dark, immersive atmosphere.

Celeste’s iconic vocals remain the centrepiece, delivering a raw, vulnerable performance that captures the complexity of the song’s themes.

The Ivors Academy has revealed nominations for this year awards. The winners will be announced at the 66th Ivor Novello Awards on 21st September.
“The Ivors with Apple Music is UK’s foremost celebration of creative excellence in songwriting and scree composition“.
The event will include material from Weller’s early days and tracks from The Jam but will also include new and unheard music and will be Weller’s first live performance in two years. The event’s setlist includes the tracks ‘English Rose’, ‘Wild Wood’ and the 1995 hit, ‘You Do Something to Me’, taken from his third solo album ‘Stanley Road’. The concert’s inclusion of Weller’s more recent material includes his latest album, ‘On Sunset’, the number one album from 2020.

The event is part of a series by the prestigious London arts centre, The Barbican. The string of events sees The Barbican collaborate with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jules Buckley. The series entitled ‘Live From The Barbican’, has provided concerts during the COVID pandemic since October of last year, beginning with a talk and workshop curated by Emmy the Great.

The Head of Music at the Barbican, Huw Humphreys has spoken on his admiration for Weller as well as The Barbican’s dedication to the arts.

“We are delighted to welcome iconic British artist Paul Weller and guests Celeste, Boy George and James Morrison alongside Jules Buckley and our Associate Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, to the summer edition of our new concert series, Live From The Barbican. The series enabled us to continue our commitment to support artists and partner organisations during a difficult year and at a time when concert halls needed to temporarily close their doors. Until we can welcome back our audiences into the hall very shortly, we are hoping that many Paul Weller fans across the globe will be able to join us at the Barbican via Livestream this May.”

Rising Star Brit award winner Celeste also expressed her delight over working with Weller. “I have found Paul Weller to be such inspiration from afar, and also in the little moments I have spent with him. Wild Wood was a song sung at my first ever gig when I was 16, so to be able to sing it with him now 10 years later feels like a career full-circle moment and I’m truly honoured he’s up for doing it!”

Due to COVID restrictions in place, the event will not be able to host a physical audience but will be live-streamed on The Barbican’s website. The event will also enjoy coverage across multiple BBC platforms including TV, Radio, online, BBC I player and BBC Sounds. On 13th June, the full event will be aired on BBC Radio 2 with highlights broadcasted on Gideon Coe’s show on 17th June. Later on, in June, the event will be broadcasted on television, presented by Edith Bowman on BBC two.

Celeste’s debut album ‘Not Your Muse,’ was released late last month and fans will be delighted to know that it has made it to the top of this weeks UK album charts. According to the Official Charts, Celeste has become ‘the first British female artist to top the chart with their debut album in just over five years, since Jess Glynne’s I Cry When I Laugh in November 2015.’ This is an impressive feat and a just reward reward for the singer who has worked incredibly hard throughout the difficult 2020, getting involved in just about every opportunity that came her way and throwing all of her enthusiasm into it.

The first week of February 2021 has proved to be a great week for British albums all round with all five of the top albums this week coming from home turf. ‘Not Your Muse,’ was closely followed in second place by London rapper Fredo’s ‘Money Can’t Buy Happiness,’ and Arlo Parks’ ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams,’ which was released the same day as ‘Not Your Muse,’ coming in an impressive third place. Arlo Parks and Celeste have proved us all right this week, having been two British artists most tipped for success this year throughout 2020 and now they have finally seen that triumph come to fruition.

Celeste’s chart success this month was certainly helped by all of the hard work she put in throughout 2020. Most notably, she wrote and recorded ‘A Little Love,’ for The John Lewis and Waitrose Christmas Avert 2020 which was hugely successful and touched hearts across the nation. The advert, which has now been viewed 4.4 million times on YouTube, placed Celeste in the forefront of the imagination of the British public like never before. It is not a huge stretch of the imagination to believe that some of those 4.4 million people would have been persuaded by the inclusion of that song on Celeste’s debut album to be persuaded to buy a copy.

As well as standout tracks like ‘A Little Love,’ and single releases ‘Love is Back,’ and ‘Stop This Flame,’ which were both well received in advance of the album’s release, the album is full of beautiful songwriting, pristine production and effortlessly good musicianship on the simple R&B/Pop accompaniment which supports her vocals perfectly. Celeste’s album was made very appealing as a preorder item by a number of exclusive bundles including signed copies which were available to purchases in advance exclusively from her online store. Shortly after the album’s release Celeste also announced that she would be touring the UK in 2022 with tickets being made available to those who have already purchased her album first. Full dates are as follows:

31/03/2022 – O2 Institute – Birmingham
03/04 – O2 Academy – Bristol
07/04 – Bar Rowland Ballroom – Glasgow

Britain’s divinely voiced soul singer Celeste is on track to top the UK album charts this week, following the release of her debut album ‘Not Your Muse’ last Friday – according to the Official Chart Company.

Celeste – the California-born, Brighton-raised artist who won the BBC’s Sound of 2020 Poll and the Brit Awards Rising Star prize last year – released her album to critical acclaim, with critics praising her vocal prowess and depth of context. According to the OCC, Celeste has a lead of 8,000 chart sales as of the February 1st Official Chart Update – having racked up the most physical and digital sales this past weekend.

Should Celeste bag the top spot, she will perpetuate a trend of Brit Award Rising Star prize (formerly known as the BRITs Critics’ Choice) winners subsequently achieving a number one chart position with their debut album. Former winners of the prize include Adele, Ellie Goulding, Sam Fender and Rag’n’Bone Man – all of whom went on to achieve number ones with their debuts.

Originally scheduled for release on February 26th, it was announced last month that the release of ‘Not Your Muse’ would be pushed forward to January 29th. In a statement released back in December as the album was announced, Celeste explained that ’Not Your Muse’ “is the power I found when I felt powerless…In making this album I have allowed myself to arrive at a place where I feel empowered, fiercely wide-eyed and fulfilled.

“I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved on my debut album and to be in this position, after the year that has been, I feel nothing but gratitude and excitement. I hope you enjoy it…”

Still in contention for the top sport but currently second by the midweek stage is art-rock musician Steve Wilson with his sixth studio album ‘The Future Bites’. Should Wilson retain the number two spot or higher, it would be a personal chart best for the artist, following a number three position with 2017 album ‘To The Bone’. Currently in third position is a contemporary of Celeste in the UK neo-soul scene, as Arlo Parks’ debut ‘Collapsed In Sunbeams’ is also on track for a top three finish in the first week.

The final results of this week’s album chart will be published by the OCC on Friday. You can find the full tracklist of ‘Not Your Muse’ below:

Celeste has treated fans today by releasing the official video for her single ‘Love is Back,’ on her Youtube channel, with the news being announced on her Instagram yesterday. The video features a quirky 1960s office theme based around a newspaper headline stating that ‘Love is Back,’ and featuring Celeste herself in an office singing the lyrics of the song into a bright red telephone in a montage with some stylish animation which echoes the live action scenes in a stylised fashion.

The video’s retro styling which takes us back to the dusty days of paper, desks and telephones are a breath of fresh air in a music industry saturated with hypermodern cliches or equally gadget laden 80s throwbacks and gives us something to really think about. The gentle nostalgia evoked by the video combines perfectly with the simple yet emotive song which tugs at the heart strings in both its musicality and its lyrical content and marks Celeste once again as a master of combining music with the moving image, a skill she first demonstrated with her incredible song composed for the Waitrose & John Lewis Partnership’s Christmas advert 2020 ‘A Little Love.’

While the John Lewis Christmas ad showed Celeste’s talent for writing to a brief, the work she has done on ‘Love Is Back,’ is very much her own, with the laid back R&B style fitting perfectly to her dusty, emotive vocal style which is in all ways unique and incredibly powerful. The video comes just over a week before Celeste’s debut album ‘Not Your Muse,’ is due to be released a month earlier than planned, a surprise announcement which delighted and pleasantly surprised fans who will find their pre-ordered copies arriving much earlier than expected.

While the exact reason’s behind this decision are not known it is likely that the ongoing coronavirus crisis in the UK, which is now claiming more lives on a daily basis than during the peak of the first wave, which has been the cause of another national lockdown without a clear end in sight may have played a role in this decision. As music fans in the UK settle in for another few months without their beloved live music, Celeste has been kind enough to gift us with one of the most highly anticipated works of recorded music of the year so far, and indeed it was hotly awaited throughout 2020 as well when Celeste was becoming the UK’s newest rising star.

“It’s been such a long time since I have been able to perform and Union Chapel is the first place I wanted to do a show,” she added.

Celeste’s decision exemplifies the gumption of many artists to schedule live performances in the latter half of this year, under the assumption that implications of the coronavirus will have attenuated by that point. Artists who have scheduled shows for this year include Shame and Sleaford Mods, while others – such as The 1975 – have cancelled entire tours altogether.

Celeste, the singer-songwriter who won the BBC’s Sound of 2020 Poll and the Brit Awards Rising Star prize last year, made the announcement following her confirmation that ‘Not Your Muse’ – her debut album – would be released a month earlier than originally planned. Slated for release on February 26th, it was announced last week that the date would be pushed forward to January 29th, much to the singer’s delight.

The Brighton-raised singer has released a plethora of singles in the last five years, including the hits “Stop This Flame” and “Strange (Edit)”, – both of which are set to appear on her new album – amassing 2.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
