After ‘Californian Soil’ hit number one, London Grammar decided to rework the tracks to create extensive, meditative mixes to share via Calm, a meditation app. Indeed, the band from Nottingham has shared new versions of the songs ‘All My Love’, ‘Californian Soil’ and ‘Lord It’s A Feeling’, with the length of these tracks ranging from 15 to 60 minutes. The mixes are available only through the Calm app from April 29th. The partnership was led by Sony Music UK’s 4th Floor Creative in collaboration with Ministry of Sound.

London Grammar guitarist Dan Rothman opened up about meditation: ‘I was always a bad sleeper when I was young. I was scared of the dark, and constantly had nightmares. My anxiety around sleep lasted until my mid 20s. When I learnt about meditation and mindfulness it really helped me understand sleep and how to deal with those difficult moments when it evades me.’

Similarly, keyboardist and drummer Dot Major added: ‘I’ve been a perennial sufferer of sleepless nights since I can remember […]. Here is something to help you sleep, I’ve made sure there’s nothing jarring in there. Just cyclical rhythms and harmony that hopefully appeals to your senses in the most soporific way.’

‘Our users are continuously looking for music to help relax, unwind and focus, so it felt completely natural to collaborate with London Grammar on remixes from their new album.’ Courtney Phillips, head of Calm Music, said. ‘We really pushed the boundaries to create long, winding tracks that create space to find stillness, and we can’t wait to hear what our listeners think.’

Calm is starting to collaborate with Universal and their roster, providing ‘Sleep Remix Series’ featuring specifically re-arranged mixes of known pop songs designed to help the listeners fall asleep. They include collaborations with Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry and more.

The band teased the new single last week by sharing a picture of written down lyrics on a recording panel with the caption; “Gone are the shadows and the past.” The lyrics read; “Are you happy now? Are you one in a million/ Are you happy now? Healing all my shame.”

This is the third single from London Grammar’s upcoming album Californian Soil, which is set to be released on April 9th after being delayed from the original date, February 12th 2021. The first single off the album, Baby it’s You was released in September 2020 and the title track followed it in October along with the tracklist and cover art for the album.

Speaking about the album in a press release in October, singer Hannah Reid said the album was about “gaining possession” of her own life and her experience with misogyny. She explained further saying; “You imagine success will be amazing. Then you see it from the inside and ask, ‘Why am I not controlling this thing? Why am I not allowed to be in control of it? And does that connect, in any way to being a woman? If so, how can I do that differently?”

She added; “Misogyny is primitive, which is why it is so hard to change. But it is also fearful. It’s about rejecting the thing in yourself which is vulnerable or feminine. Yet everybody has that thing.”

Indie-pop band London Grammar announced yesterday that they have a new album coming up, and it will be titled ‘Californian Soil’. Furthermore, the second single from the release will be out later today, at 7.30pm.

The band posted to social media to reveal the news, saying, “Making this song was a real turning point for us as a band. So much so we decided to name the album after this song too.” They also shared a teaser video – which is likely a set up for the music video – showing a person who is suspected to be lead singer Hannah Ried washed up on a beach. The link to view is here.

Along with the clip was a short segment of the song itself, with echoing ad libs from Ried, a plucked guitar to accompany her, and some synth sounds to bring some excitement to the otherwise spacious, steady track. Fans are looking forward to hearing the full song, as well as more details about the album.

The new single follows previous release, ‘Baby It’s You’, which came out in September, and was the first release from London Grammar since 2017 album ‘Truth Is A Beautiful Thing’. The single was experimental with sound, which was welcomed by fans.

Recently, London Grammar played ‘Baby It’s You’ live for the first time as part of their BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge set, giving a stunning performance which did not sacrifice any of the song’s production. This was followed by a cover of The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights’ with a laid back indie spin. Speaking to Clara Amfo on the show, Hannah discussed the album, explaining that they already had a name but couldn’t reveal it just yet.
