While nowadays they make headlines more for their political activism, Massive Attack are still one of the most respected electronic acts in the UK, and they still love a good live show. The Bristol trip-hop duo have today announced a run of 5 live shows across Europe later this year on their “xLive 2026” tour, their first European solo excursion in 7 years.

Formed in 1988, Massive Attack sprung from Bristol’s Wild Bunch sound-system collective, part of the city’s electronic music scene throughout the 80’s. The culture brought DJing, rapping, and graffiti art together to create an underground movement that transcended the music. Currently consisting of just two members, Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, their sound is a shifting mix of slow, atmospheric electronic music, with influence from early hiphop and an assortment of diverse vocal features. Their success has included two UK Number One Albums with ‘Mezzanine’ in 1998 and ‘100th Window’ in 2003, as well as winning Best British Dance Act at the 1996 Brit Awards.

The collective have a reputation for speaking out on global issues, especially climate change, conflict and corporate greed. Their website is a testament to this, ditching the usual news and tour information in favour of displaying their mission statement on their crusade to reduce the environmental impact of live shows. One of their most high-profile cases was last year’s run in with music streaming giant Spotify. In September, they started by signing onto the protest movement “No Music For Genocide”, which requested that streaming services cease from allowing their music to be played in Israel, due to the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza. They then took things further by motioning that Spotify remove their full discography altogether, after it was revealed their billionaire CEO Daniel Ek was investing money in a weapons company linked to Israel.

After a five year break, Del Naja and Marshall returned to playing live in 2024, holding a “Climate Change Accelerator” show in their home city Bristol that August, where they worked with local businesses to reduce the carbon footprint of the event. On their website, they say “the Bristol show is widely predicted to be the lowest carbon show of its size ever staged”, and express intent to continue this ethos into all of their future shows.

Until this morning, their 2026 plans only consisted of appearances at Primavera Sound festivals in both Barcelona and Portugal this June. They announced the new European dates earlier in a post on social media, their first headline tour on the continent since 2019. Stopping over May and June in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Belgium, the full run of the tour looks like this:

• Veikkaus Arena, Helsinki – 27/05
• Dalhalla, Rättvik – 30/05
• Royal Arena, Copenhagen – 01/06
• Zitadelle, Berlin – 07/06
• Forest National, Brussels – 08/06

While there is no announcement for British shows, fans can still hope for at least something this year. Speaking to NME in 2024, when asked about future releases Del Naja said “We do have some new music which we’ve been sitting on for four years… dispute at the label – that’s a different article altogether.” Whatever the drama, there appears to have been a breakthrough since, as Massive Attack shared a post last November revealing their intent to release “a cache of work created in the recent past” at some point in 2026.

While the rest of the South-West of England is mired by closures of live music venues, Bristol still stands as a bastion of the arts and culture. One of the UK’s most unique and vibrant cities, it is home to vast amounts of concerts, plays, comedy shows and events, the largest hub for fans from around Western England and Wales. After plans were approved in 2020, developer YTL Live have revealed new updates on their proposed 20,000 capacity indoor arena – the first of its kind outside London, Birmingham or Manchester. Now formally named the Aviva Arena, it aims to transform the Filton area of Bristol into a one-of-a-kind culture hub.

According to BristolLive, demolition work in the area had completed in January, paving the way for the new construction in the Brabazon Hangars, the site in Filton Airfield where supersonic airliner Concorde was developed in the 50s and 60s. They hosted a party to break the news of the new name on Thursday the 19th of February, held at Aerospace Bristol. Acclaimed singer-songwriter Tom Grennan ripped through a 6-song performance with the last Concorde to take to the skies suspended above him.

During the exhibition, CGI images of the prospective Aviva Arena were shown to the audience, with Grennan remarking “I’ve been coming to Bristol for 10 years on tour, traveling, and it’s such a great place for music, so bringing something like this here is going to change the whole city. And it’s going to be amazing.” The new name is a result of a multi-million pound partnership with British insurance firm Aviva, who also hold naming rights with Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, home to their national rugby union team. Aviva Group CEO Dame Amanda Blanc said “Bristol is an important city for Aviva, and we are proud to back this new world-class arena which will have such a positive community impact. Aviva Arena will further strengthen Bristol’s position as one of Europe’s great creative cities and become a landmark destination for the South West of England.”

The project is set to be enormous, opening 2000 new jobs during construction with 500 more when the facilities are operational, and setting out to meet a deadline of opening by late 2028. In addition to the Aviva Arena, which will occupy one of the Brabazon Hangar units, they intend to build a conference space and 6,500 new houses. Transport links to the area are being established, with a new North Filton train station due to open in the Autumn this year. Currently YTL forecast that the arena will bring 120 events a year, with excess of 1.4 million attendants, earning the city’s economy over £1 billion in its first 10 years.

The Aviva Arena’s ambitions stretch far beyond Bristol, where its surrounding venues are lacking in one way or another. Their largest stadium, Ashton Gate, boasts a capacity of 32,000 for their summer shows, but is only available when football and rugby have wrapped for the season. The city’s O2 Academy only holds 1,600, and nearby in Cardiff, the Utilita Indoor Arena can host just 7,500. The Aviva Arena’s 20,000 tops Birmingham’s max of around 15,000, matches London’s O2 Arena, and only falls short of Manchester’s Co-op Live and Manchester Arena, both of which allow over 23,000.

With the long wait until its 2028 opening ahead, you can find more about this exciting project on the Aviva Arena website here.

Music Venue Properties (MVP), who are a Charitable Community Benefit Society created by Music Venue Trust (MVT), have just purchased their 6th and 7th venues.

The Joiners, located in Southampton, and The Croft, located in Bristol, are historic grassroots venues that have seen artists such as Ed Sheeran, Oasis, and Coldplay play at the early stages of their careers.

MVP focuses on removing iconic grassroots venues from vulnerable commercial leases and placing them into community ownerships. This allows them to have long-term stability as MVP sets rent rates, ensures annual contributions towards maintenance, and ongoing support in the areas such as financial sustainability.

The two grassroots venues will now have permanent protected status. Named The National Trust for Grassroots Music Venues, Music Venues Properties focuses on removing venues from vulnerable leases by purchasing the building and being responsible for the maintenance.

Ricky Bates, the venue operator said, “We want to thank every single person who has bought a share in the scheme and ensured The Joiners’ future. As one of the most important live music venues ever to exist in the UK this is a win for all independent live music across the globe.”

“There are still more venues that need to be secured so please do invest if you can.”

World Famous Dive Bars’ Marc Griffiths said, “The Croft reopened recently but the future was still very uncertain.”

“Now, with MVP as the landlord, we know that this legendary venue will be part of Bristol’s unique music ecosystem for generations to come.”

Since launching in 2022, the Own Our Venues campaign has raised almost £4 million through community investment, with music fans buying shares from as little as £50, and funding from cultural partners.

The current phase of the Our Own Venues campaign has reached 82% of its £1.5 million target to bring seven more vital grassroots music venues into permanent community ownership.

COO Own Our Venues Matt Otridge said, “The purchase and securing of The Joiners and The Croft, two iconic buildings that have launched international carriers and sit at the heart of their communities, marks a historic milestone for Music Venue Properties.”

“But the work isn’t over and there are still more venues under threat… Every contribution helps us to secure more venues and each investor can then stand alongside those who already proudly say: we own these venues.”

Music fans can continue to invest and support the campaign here, which is live until November 14.

Once the target has been hit, Music Venue Properties hope to purchase the remainder of targeted venues, as well as announce the next phase of fundraising.

Massive Attack has recently announced Act 1.5, an event dedicated to climate action acceleration. This event will feature Robert Del Naja and Grant Marshall performing their first concert in the UK in five years. Set to take place on August 25th, 2024, at Clifton Downs in their hometown of Bristol, this concert aims to be the most environmentally friendly show of its scale ever organised.

To achieve this, Massive Attack has implemented a range of innovative measures. The concert will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources, with solar panels and wind turbines providing the necessary electricity. The stage and lighting equipment will be energy-efficient, utilising the latest technology to minimise energy consumption.

Transportation to and from the event will also be environmentally friendly. Massive Attack has partnered with Train Hugger, a company that promotes sustainable travel, to offer discounted train tickets to concert-goers. Additionally, the band has collaborated with Ecotricity, a green energy supplier, to provide electric vehicle charging stations at the venue.

In terms of waste management, the Act 1.5 event will prioritise recycling and composting. Attendees will be encouraged to bring reusable water bottles and food containers, and there will be designated areas for waste separation. The concert organizers have also committed to offsetting the carbon emissions associated with the event through various initiatives, such as tree planting and investment in renewable energy projects.

Furthermore, the Act 1.5 event will serve as a platform for education and engagement. Massive Attack has invited climate scientists and experts from the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research to give talks and presentations on the urgency of climate action. There will also be interactive exhibits and workshops where attendees can learn about sustainable practices and how to reduce their carbon footprint.

By organizing Act 1.5, Massive Attack aims to set a new standard for environmentally friendly live music events. They hope that their efforts will inspire other artists and event organizers to prioritize sustainability and take meaningful action to combat climate change. Through their music and activism, Massive Attack continues to use their platform to drive positive change and create a more sustainable future.

Massive attack have used their social media platform to support their work but more importantly the causes they stand by and stand up for. Most recently they posted a copy of a letter that was addressed to the President from the band, to which they highlighted, what they believed to be a responsibility of the international community to end this crisis. It read,
“The international community has a responsibility to use all its influence to prevent further escalation and end this crisis. I urge the members of the Security Council to press to advert a humanitarian catastrophe. I reiterate my appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared. This is urgent.

“How To Swim Down” is the third single Svalbard have shared in anticipation of the album’s release, after previous sharing “Following Eternal Spirits” (a song written in tribute of ex-Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison) and “Faking It.” The song presents frontwoman Serena Cherry opting for a complete clean vocal performance and, for the first time, guitarist Liam Phelan featured on violin. The song represents a departure in sound for what the band are usually known for and offers a perfect glimpse into what The Weight Of The Mask has to offer.

Svalbard have also released a beautifully animated video created by Boy Tillkens to accompany the new single. Cherry has stated that the animation captures the emotions of the song delicately and is a moving creative piece to watch.

Speaking of the song, Cherry said, “this song is about the exquisite pain and sorrowful beauty of unrequited love. I think it’s the saddest, most heartbreaking song we’ve ever written. Lyrically, the starting point of the verse is about concealment of adoration, before the chorus gives way to realising and accepting a fate of loving someone quietly from afar.”

Never a band to shy away from challenging the parameters of their genre, Svalbard have nonetheless ventured into parts unknown with “How To Swim Down,” with Phelan taking a starring turn on violin for the first time in the band’s 12 year history. Cherry’s is also a notable performance on the song, as the singer decided to abandon the harsh screams for a more straight forward clean approach.

Cherry explains, “musically, ‘How To Swim Down’ saw us dive into uncharted waters with Liam adding many layers of mournful violin parts onto the track. Finally, violins-for the first time in Svalbard history! It feels so exciting to have new instruments on a song. Another first is that ‘How To Swim Down’ features only clean vocals, no screams….It’s a private, selfless love song, where only the listener knows of my heartache.”

Svalbard were formed in Bristol in 2011 and quickly made a name for themselves, blending the ferocity of hardcore and metal with existential reflections of black metal and shoe-gaze. The band will release The Weight Of The Mask on 6 October via Nuclear Blast Records and will feature on October’s Cult Of Luna’s Beyond The Redshift Festival. Tickets can be purchased here. Pre-orders of the new album can be found here.

Sit Down For Dinner was a product of lockdown written and recorded over a five-year period. In 2020, lead singer Kazu Makino reading a passage from Joan Didion’s 2005 memoir, ‘The Year of Magical Thinking’, was struck by Didion’s reflections on her devastating experience of witnessing her husband’s sudden death at the dinner table. Makino thought of her own lost ritual of congregating for dinner with family. The line “You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends” eventually inspired the album’s title.

For the Pace brothers, family dinners also hold a cultural weight. “I know a lot of people eat and run, eat in front of their TV, or don’t care about it too much—and that’s OK—but we really do,” says Simone. “It’s a moment for us to sit down and have time with each other.” Pre-save the album here.

Alt-rock trio Blonde Redhead first formed in New York in 1993 when Italian twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace met Japanese art student Kazu Makino by chance in an Italian restaurant. The band has dipped their toes in noise rock, dream pop, shoegaze, and art rock throughout its discography. They’ve cultivated a loyal following and gained a resurge in popularity after the closing track to 2000’s Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, “For the Damaged Coda”, was used in a Rick and Morty episode and became a viral meme.

Brighton post-punk band Squid has shared the second single, “The Blades”, from their upcoming sophomore album O Monolith. Melodic guitars nimbly navigate through funky basslines whilst drums beat to uncommon time signatures on this experimental and energetic new single. Listen below:

Lead singer and drummer of the group Ollie Judge said of the track’s meaning in a press release, “On the surface it’s a song about police brutality with the last section kind of inspired by The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, although I’ve never read the book, I’ve just seen The Simpsons’ spoof of it”.

He went on to say, “Narratively it follows a police helicopter pilot’s day, ending with him in bed hearing another pilot circling the skies as if he were taunting him. There’s a deeper meaning in there somewhere of my fear of ego, but I’m still working out which bit of the song that’s coming from.”

The single premiered on the 25th May alongside a music video starring English actress Charlotte Ritchie known for her roles in Fresh Meat, Dead Pixels, and You. Enduring mind-numbing boredom, Ritchie’s character arbitrarily awaits an entirety for an appointment in a drab grey waiting room and dreams of the lush British countryside. The video was directed by Norwegian director Kasper Häggstrøm who has previously worked with Radiohead and Kelly Lee Owens.

Squid announced their second LP would be released in the summer back in February writing on their Instagram, “Pleased to announce our second album O Monolith out 9th June. We worked really hard on this record. We recorded it in Wiltshire among lots of green space just as spring was setting in.” They continued, “It’s an album about fears, whatever may or may not be beyond the skies, death, rats and bedside cabinets. Thanks for your patience and we hope you enjoy it.” Pre-order the album here.

The band will head out on an Autumn UK and Europe tour later this year in support of their new album playing eight gigs around the UK. To celebrate the release of O Monolith, Squid will be performing and signing records in stores and at a few outdoor shows in the UK this June. Fans can also catch Squid at various festivals this summer including Rock Werchter, Standon Calling, Greenman, and RALLY.

When someone thinks outside the box, a general refreshment shifts the whole dynamic of the assignment at hand. It offers new paths to be discovered in order to deal with things differently. I guess one could consider that thinking outside the box is a manner of looking forwards. Other than backwards. Just like the bristol based festival FORWARDS.

The festival comes back after their very successful debut edition last year, announcing two big headlines who are ready to rock the festival off the boat. The event is going to be lead by one of the most influential and celebrated electronic musicians of all time, Aphex Twin, known for his innovative and experimental approach to the making of his music. Backing up, expect to see the eclectic Erykah Badu. She is amongst the biggest neo-soul idols of the industry and she definitely knows how to put on a show.

A selection of other unmissable artists also have a spot in the lineup. These include Bonobo, Primal Scream, Arlo Parks, Raye, Leftfield, Amyl and The Sniffers, Viagra Boys and many more. Hosted at Clifton Downs in Bristol from the 1st September to the 2nd.

The reason why the festival adopted such a name like FORWARDS, is because it’s ideology toward a greater cause is particularly prominent within their handbook. Not only do they put their head down to put on the best live acts and musical experiences for the Bristol audience, but they take into account the particular discrepancies found amongst the public’s possible unfortunate dysfunctionalities and impairments.

As part of their schedule they include a section named The Information. An offered opportunity for fans to get involved in a space dedicated to hosting debates and discussions alongside experts, creatives, disruptors, writers and thinkers. It is a challenge to create an interactive dynamic in the affair to get people to speak their opinion. After last years success with Jack Monroe and Jay Rayner they return with further announcements down the line.

As well as the latter they have adapted a number of other improvements such as host a Social Initiative programme to create awareness towards positive change. A Capture Forwards programme which invites photographer startups to get first hand experience in shooting a live event to kick start their career.

Claimed “a progressive-minded festival” - a statement made by The Guardian. A fair affirmation after finding out that NHS workers get a discounted ticket, as a thank you for the hard work they put in for the country. As well as balanced discounts for residents and low-income customers. It is safe to say the festival has been named quite accurately.

Tickets go on sale on the 24th March at 10am. The pre sale, however, is on the 23rd March at 10am.

Underworld took to the stage in Bristol on the 19th March with a welcoming surprise under their sleeve. Playing at the Marble Factory, they included four debut songs in their live setlist, leaving fans gagging for more.

They opened the show with one of the debut tracks “Gene Pool”. Setting the scene for the audience in reassurance that, what they were about to experience, wasn’t like any other of their live shows.

The duo maintained a sturdy setlist throughout. These included their latest releases “Juanita 2022” from last year, “Two Months Off” from 2021 . An appearance from their last studio album DRIFT Series 1 called “Border Country” and a few intricacies from older releases. From their 1999 album Beaucoup Fish the duo played “Cups”, “Jumbo” and “Shudder”. Not to mention the 1994 Dubnobasswithmyheadman playing “Mmm… Skyscraper I Love You”.

They played golden tracks, and after “Gene Pool” as the intro, they introduced another fresh debut “Strawberry Hotel” as the fifth song, followed by “Denver Luna” as the seventh and “And The Colour Red” as a finishing line for the performance, before their final “Born Slippy” encore.

Their Bristol audience were left buzzing after the show and some consider it to be the best show they’ve attended yet. “Bristol last night was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to” stated a fan. And another “Brizzle last night…if you weren’t there, you missed an absolute treat. Karl and Rick – thank you”.

Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, the members of the band, are a mysterious double. Cheeky teasers in live shows to uproar fans curiosity and anticipation are done to the tee. It feels like they’re about to announce an upcoming tour, which the audience seem quite desperate for. Or they are about to drop a new album release date. Who knows. The suspense is clearly there and is already starting to boil over.

They performed the same show including these four fresh cuts at another recent gig. On March the 20th they showcased another blindingly flavoursome show in London at the Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The British duo have a few shows coming up. Over the pond they will be playing at Coachella on the 15th April, the Warfield in San Francisco on the 21st April, Coachella Weekend 2 on the 22nd April and at Movement Festival in Detroit on the 29th May. Following after they will be making their way back to the UK to play at Junction 2 in London on the 21st July, they will be playing at The Secret Garden Party on the 22nd July and finish off at Lowlands Festival on the 18th August in the Netherlands.

Tickets are here for upcoming shows.

UK Show Dates:

21/07/2023 – Junction 2 – London
22/07 – The Secret Garden Party – Abbots Ripton
