American singer Julien Baker is in London performing five concerts at Hackney’s iconic music venue Earth Hall. The artist had first announced only three shows which however had to almost be multiplied due to the extreme demand.

The Hackney shows are the only dates set in Europe for Baker’s tour, which has taken her around the United States and Canada; the tour will be ending with these British stops, only to resume in April of next year where Baker will begin playing summer festivals, so far announced only in the US.

Baker had previously toured around the UK and Europe, playing many smaller cities around various countries, in her 2021 and 2022 tour. She has played in the UK London, Leeds, Glasgow and Dublin. Baker didn’t comment on why she chose to play multiple nights in London rather than travelling across the country; surely however this decision didn’t bother fans who still managed to sell out every single UK show set for this tour.

Over social media, fans have discussed Baker’s setlist which appears to be changing for every show. Back in the United States, Baker had invited some musician friends to join her on stage, for example Lucy Dacus. In the UK, however, little is known about the shows besides the fact that they are fully sold-out. She previously sang fan-favourite songs such as “Appointments”, “Hardline” and “Everybody Does”.

Baker is an indie artist whose rise to fame happened in relation to the super group Boygenius, of which she is part along with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus. Baker only has one album recognized in the UK charts: “Little Oblivions” released 2021 peaked at 51 in the UK. But Baker has a big fan-base in the UK. Last year, along with Boygenius, she headlined Gunnersbury Park in London, played two sold-out nights at iconic Piece Hall in Halifax and headlined Connect Festival in Edinburgh.

With Boygenius, on the other hand, Baker does have a UK number one: their album “The Record” released in 2023.

Baker released her debut album in 2015 while she was a student in Tennessee, her home state. After the album, titled “Sprained Ankle” received good critical acclaim, Baker went on to release “Turn Out the Lights” in 2017 and “Little Oblivions” in 2021. Her music resonates with fans for its softness and confession-like lyricism. Some of her songs, such as “Sprained Ankle” and “Hardline” have gone viral on TikTok in the past few years, gaining Baker more recognition. But her loyal fan-base is more mesmerised by Baker’s extraordinary lyricism and ability to describe with such understanding depth emotions, feelings and the journey of each human being.

Tonight and tomorrow are the last two dates on Baker’s UK tour, but it’s likely that the American singer will announce more dates to take place next summer.

Fresh from her headline set at the Reading and Leeds festival on the weekend, Billie Eilish played a very small intimate show at the Electric Ballroom in Camden last night (August 29).

The show was packed with special guests and a very excited crowd as Eilish herself had to stop the show four times and ask the crowd to calm down.

Amongst the guests was London-based rapper, singer and producer Labrinth who came out to perform their collaborative track, ‘Never Felt So Alone’ from Labrinth’s album Ends & Begins, released earlier this year.

Eilish wasn’t done with special guest appearances however as super group Boygenius took to the stage after wowing audiences at Gunnersbury Park just over a week ago (August 20) to perform ‘When the Party’s Over’, a single from Eilish’s first album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Her set comprised of huge fan-favourite singles such as ‘Bad Guy’ and ‘Happier Than Ever’ but she also performed rarities for the crowd such as ‘My Boy’ and ‘Wish You Were Gay’.

It wasn’t such a straight forward show however, as three songs into her set she stopped mid-performance during ‘Therefore I Am’ two times in order to encourage the crowd to check on the crowd amid crowd crushing, urging security to give out water to the crowd. “Can we get some water for these folks? Like where is security? Am I security now?” she frustratingly exclaimed to the audience.

The show was marred with crowd and security concerns from Eilish as she repeatedly addressed her frustration to the crowd by saying: “I haven’t played a small venue in literally six years. I’ve forgotten how to do this… I’m having an anxiety attack right now,” later following this up by adding “This felt like a good idea… Once. You guys look like you’re gonna die, take a step back.”

Her frustrations with security did not stop there as later on in the set she was still not happy as she addressed the crowd once more: “No one is answering me,”. She later had a break in the set to allow security to give out water and to provide a break for the excitable crowd, saying to the crowd: “Who needs an inhaler? I feel like I’m babysitting. Do you feel ok for me to keep going?”.

The intimate show was a surprise one that was only announced 3 days prior, in between her headlining sets at Reading and Leeds festival. Unsurprisingly, tickets for the show sold out instantly and fans were clearly fanatic about seeing a megastar such Billie Eilish at such a small venue.

Lucy Dacus’ “Thumbs” from her album Home Video is to be rereleased with a full band rendition, aptly titled “Thumbs Again”. Where the original album cut features solely vocals, the full band rendition features guitar, drums, and synth for a fuller, though still haunting sound. Alongside the release, she has additionally announced a tour for Winter 2022, playing a dizzying number of dates across North America, UK and Europe. Listen to “Thumbs Again” below:

Dacus has just recently finished up a 2021 tour in support of her Home Video, where the Winter 2022 tour will be the continuation of the previous tour. On the 19th of November she will link up with her Boygenius bandmates for their first show in three years, where they will play a benefit show in San Fransisco.

The track, which recalls an evening where Dacus met a friends estranged father and fantasised about killing him, was influenced by her own struggles with her birth father: Dacus tells the Rolling Stone, “it ends with those lines, ‘You don’t owe him shit/Even if he said you did. That’s me speaking to her, but I needed to hear that for myself.”

The original track “Thumbs” was so highly anticipated earlier in the year that it had its own fan-run Twitter account. “Thumbs” managed to entice a visceral reaction from Dacus herself, saying that “like most songs I write, I wasn’t expecting it. It made me feel weird, almost sick,” telling the Rolling Stone. Listen to the original below:

The trio made up of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, have joined forces to form brand new group called Boygenius. The trio have announced their debut EP as Boygenius and will tour the US together this year. They are also touring individually as well, which will see Julian Baker and Lucy Dacus hitting the road in the UK. Boygenius are set to release their debut EP on the 9th of November 2018 through Matador Records.

Boygenius will feature six tracks, three of which were released on the 21st of August 2018. According to NME each artist brought one song and one idea to the recording session, which they then worked on together. The three song released are the Dacus-led “Bite The Hand,” the Bridgers-led “Me & My Dog,” and the Baker-led “Stay Down.”

“When we met, Lucy and Phoebe and I were in similar places in our lives and our musical endeavours, but also had similar attitudes toward music that engendered an immediate affinity. Lucy and Phoebe are incredibly gifted performers, and I am a fan of their art outside of being their friends, but they are also both very wise, discerning and kind people whom I look up to in character as much as in talent,” says Baker.

Speaking about the EP “It seemed obvious to record a 7-inch for tour, although many adult men will try to take credit for the idea,” says Bridgers. “When we got together, we had way more songs than we expected and worked so well together, that we decided to make a full EP. Everyone seemed both confident enough to present ideas and fight for their individual vision, but considerate and humble enough to make decisions which ultimately served the song. It was a process that required a balance of determination and forthrightness with graciousness and pliability, and I think that we all did a good job of enacting that,” Baker continued.

The US tour will see Baker and Bridgers co-headline with support from Dacus. Each musician will play a solo set, while a press release suggests fans “might be able to hear some Boygenius songs along the way.” The trio are set to hit the road on the 4th of November in Nashville and are expected to conclude their tour on the 30th of November in Los Angeles. While, Bakers UK leg of her tour begins on the 24th of August in Manchester and is set to conclude on the 29th of August in London.
