Lexi Jones, daughter of rock icon David Bowie and supermodel Iman, has released her debut album, titled ‘Xandri’. Released on 2 April, the 12-track album is the 24-year old’s first foray into the music world, and the record has already been noted for its lofi quality, and DIY spirit.

‘Xandri’ is an entirely solo effort, with all tracks written, recorded and produced by Jones. The album feels like bedroom pop, with each track featuring simple acoustic guitar chords, with the occasional subtle electronic flourish. Each element combines to produce an album that is a melting pot of Jones’ efforts, with her solitary approach making the record feel like an intimate portrait of the artist. This feeling is compounded by the self-publicising of the album, with no record label seemingly attached to the release.

Some have taken Jones’ individual approach as an indication of her deliberately trying to distance herself from her famous parents, avoiding any accusations of nepotism and carving out a name of her own. Jones has also earned praise for the quality of the album, with one X user saying, “It’s really interesting. Not at all what I expected.”

Even the artwork for the album cover seems to have been created by the 24-year old, featuring two faces that resemble the tragedy and comedy masks usually associated with theatre. Jones has experience working as a visual artist, and has shared previous creations on her social media and on her website, where her pieces can be bought.

In the run up to the release of ‘Xandri’, Jones shared snippets of various tracks, often partnered with pictures and videos from her youth. These videos came before any announcement, and were filled with questions about any potential release. Some videos shared to her instagram page, @_p0odle, received backlash for seemingly using generative AI to assist in the animation process despite working as a visual artist herself, and Jones has yet to comment on it.

I know you posted this before you posted your review but, I wonder if she’s just trying to do everything herself and that’s just kind of how things are done today?

Though this is her first formal release of music, Jones went viral in 2023 when she sang two of her father’s most famous songs. She covered ‘Starman’ and ‘Life on Mars’ on an Instagram live stream, and was praised for her soft singing voice.

Beyond this album, Jones has shown a creative ambition for years, even releasing a fashion line in 2023. Her website, which the clothing is listed on, also includes a mission statement, emphasising the importance of art in her life. “Art has been a rock in my life for as long as I can remember,” the artist shared. “My hope is to inspire those who come across this body of work to join in on the journey to find something that fuels a passion to find your driving force in life.”

Whether music becomes a permanent outlet for Jones, or she pursues other interests, ‘Xandri’ aligns with her passion for exploring herself through creative endeavors on her own terms.

Despite ABBA trying their very best to try and get a vinyl copy of their recent album Voyager onto the record shelves of everyone in the UK over the age of 40, the Official Charts Company and Music Week have revealed that David Bowie has, in fact, shifted the largest number of vinyl records in the UK this century. From the 2000’s up to the modern-day (specifically January 6th 2022) Bowie has sold (apparently exactly) 582,704 records, overshadowing out The Beatles, who bagged 2nd place, and their measly 535,596 units. Making them the only 2 artists to break the half-million mark this side of the millennium.

Interestingly, if you have a look at the data for 2021 Bowie’s sales only land him in 3rd place with 53,181, right behind Taylor Swift in second with 56,917, and then The Beatles rounding out the list with 58,567. But as for the ’20s as a whole, Bowie comes out on top; more than likely due to the massive reissue campaign that has been put in place now Warner Chappell Music own the publishing rights to all of Bowie’s back catalogue. A 50th-anniversary limited-edition picture disc version of the seminal album Hunky Dory proved to be a massive success that allowed the album to re-enter the vinyl charts at no.31. Bowie’s posthumous release Toy also proved to be a commercial success after its Box-set and standard edition vinyl release launched it up to 5th position. The last release to make big waves for Bowie since the release of Blackstar and his untimely death in 2016 is the compilation album Legacy, the 75th birthday celebrations have led to a spike in sales allowing the album to sit at 19th for the duration of the celebrations.

This news comes not long after the announcement that vinyl sales in the UK are experiencing a new high that comes from 14 consecutive years of growth for the format. 2021 was the first year since 1991 to have more than 5 million vinyl records sold in the UK. This feat may have been helped along by record-breaking releases from ABBA, Adele, and other mammoth rollouts like that from Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift last year.

Bowie’s official merch store is currently still shifting copies of a series of releases in association with Bowie’s 75th birthday celebrations. If you want some reasonably limited pressings, picture disc reissues, or one of the few remaining Toy box-sets, then now is your time to get in there quickly.

Bowie recorded both ‘Mother’ in 1998. ‘Mother‘ was originally recorded to be apart of a tribute album to the late, great Lennon, who had died in 1980. He had recorded it with Tony Visconti, his longtime producer who had helped extensively throughout Bowies career, including on the iconic ‘Berlin Trilogy’ featuring ‘Low’, ‘Lodger’ and ‘Heroes’. However, the album was not released and the cover was shelved. The original by Lennon is haunting and experimental, conveying raw emotion by the end of the track. Bowie’s cover has the familiar opening, yet there is an intense electronica build up, similar to the sounds of his ‘Earthling’ album, released in 1997.

‘Tryin’ to Get To Heaven’ was also covered by Bowie in 1998. The cover reflects the experimental style Bowie was trying at this time period. In comparison to the original, Bowie’s version is somewhat more haunting, with synths and catchy electronic-guitar hooks making the song sound completely different.

David Bowie had a huge impact on many peoples lives, fans and musicians alike. This weekend from the 8th – 10th January, there were many tributes to the singer, with Dice streaming his play ‘Lazarus’, a sequel to the film ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, which Bowie starred in. On 9th January 2021, ‘A Bowie Celebration: Just for One Day’ was live streamed across the world with musical legends such as Boy George, Duran Duran and Ricky Gervais paying tribute on the 5th anniversary of Bowie’s passing. Mike Garson presented the concert. Garson was a longstanding pianist and friend that worked with Bowie on iconic albums such as ‘Aladdin Sane.’ Duran Durans cover of ‘5 Years’ was performed over the weekend, which is now available to stream on Spotify.

Other tributes have been from social media platform such as Tik Tok. They have acquired Bowie’s full music catalog to their library. On 10th January 2021, Tik Tok released #TheStarman hashtag challenge, inviting users to re-create the iconic looks of David Bowie over his long music career, to remember and commemorate the cultural icon.

A music video to David Bowie’s unreleased 1997 remake, ‘Repetition’ has been released for the first time. To create the video, ‘Repetition ’97’ depicts rehearsal footage from Bowie’s ‘Earthling Tour’, filmed by Tim Pope.

So, in creating the music video, Pope, from Hartford, Connecticut, produced offset, distorted edits of Bowie’s face. Plus, this is the 90’s Bowie, who flaunts a shock of red hair.

Elsewhere, an archive release called ‘ChangesNowBowie’, containing nine unheard tracks, has been announced for release, of which ‘Repetition ’97’ is one of the nine songs. So, back in 1996, Bowie and band members Reeves Gabrels and Mark Plati produced a number of acoustic sessions. They recorded the work in New York’s Looking Glass Studios.

Subsequently, the recordings were broadcast to the BBC in 1997. This marked Bowie’s 50th birthday. As a result, some thirteen years later, the release of ‘ChangesNowBowie’ marks the first time the work becomes available to the public.

Initially, the album was due for a Record Store Day release date, (April 17). However, the event has now been postponed until June 20. The collection will still be released digitally on April 17.

For a visual taster of what we’re talking about, check out the music video via the Youtube link below.

Recently, Bowie’s son Duncan Jones tweeted news apparently confirming an Aardman Animation based on Bowie, the makers of Wallace & Gromit. Duncan wrote: “Incredibly excited today to be able to announce the release of the FIRST EPISODE of the @aardman animation… BOWIE TV SERIES!”

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, we almost forgot it was April Fools Day. So, here’s a story about Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie.

Earlier today, Duncan released a statement on Twitter apparently confirming the release of an Aardman Animation based on his father. The company behind Wallace & Gromit, it seemed, were the brains behind a TV show focusing on the ‘Life On Mars’ icon.

Duncan wrote: “Incredibly excited today to be able to announce the release of the FIRST EPISODE of the @aardman animation… BOWIE TV SERIES!”

Beneath the caption was a video, displaying a thumbnail of Wallace as a David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust’. A URL link was provided directly beneath the message from Duncan. Clicking on it sends you to Youtube, where you’re met with the ‘RickRoll’d’ footage.

Incredibly excited today to be able to announce the release of the FIRST EPISODE of the @aardman animation…

— Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon) April 1, 2020

Some would argue it’s an old joke, but from time to time, it’s still funny. Naturally, in times of crisis, such as now, we all needed a small pick me up. In response, one Twitter user said: “This is a very bad and mean joke because THIS WOULD BE PERFECT,”

Another remarked: “You are literally the only person who could get away with this. You git!”

However, despite it being April 1st, Duncan did suggest that a Bowie TV project could be on the cards soon. To which Jones affirmed: “We’ll make it up to everyone,”

Recently, Jamiroquai reworked Bowie’s classic ‘Let’s Dance’ into a COVID-19 themed version, ‘Lockdown’. In his rendition to the 1983 hit, Jamiroquai sings: “Lockdown, put on your face mask and watch TV/ Lockdown, to the sound of the kids all screaming at me,”

At the bridge, he sings: “And if you dry cough, I’ll run from you/ A fever so high with diarrhea/ You know this viral flu is trying to kill you too/ If you should run under a bus it is because you’re bored.”

It’ll feature music from the late icon spanning through the years 1969 to 1972, performed by DAVID LIVE, a five-piece tribute group of Bowie from the UK. The dates of the event are set for January 10-11, with doors open at 7 pm.

The National Space Centre has collaborated with De Montfort University Leicester, Loughborough College and Leicester College in a sideshow exhibiting visual media inspired by Bowie.

Associate Professor for Student Experience at DMU, Paul McNicoll said in a statement, “We’re thrilled to team up with the National Space Centre for this exciting event, which will provide an invaluable platform for our Fashion and Textiles MA students,”

“Inspired by the Apollo missions and the work of David Bowie, they will be showcasing innovative designs across fashion, textiles, intimates, footwear and accessories.”

Back in July, a deluxe boxset of Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ album was released, (July 12).

It commemorated the 50th anniversary of his 1969 album, released on July 11, 1969, 50 years later. The deluxe set contained a double-sided poster of the original ‘Space Oddity’ print advert, a shot of Bowie at the London Palladium during the ‘Save Rave 69′ concert, as well as a Jojanneke Claasen photograph from the ‘Space Oddity’ promo single cover session, and information card.

The EP includes mono versions of ‘Space Oddity’ and ‘Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud’, including 2019 mixes of the tracks.

In August, a photo of Johnny Flynn for the upcoming biopic Stardust was released.

The project was announced earlier this year, which focuses on the story of Bowie’s journey to America in 1971, at the time when Ziggy Stardust was created.

The film, however, was not received well Bowie’s family, with son Duncan Jones writing on Twitter, “Pretty certain nobody has been granted music rights for ANY biopic… I would know,”

“I’m not saying this movie is not happening. I honestly wouldn’t know. I’m saying that as it stands, this movie won’t have any of dads music in it, & I can’t imagine that changing.”
