Following the release of his album Fragments, Bonobo has dropped a music video for the album track “Shadows”. Released on Ninja Tune last Friday, the new album features huge artists including Joji, Jordan Rakei, who features on “Shadows”, and Miguel-Atwood Ferguson. Watch the video for “Shadows” below:

Described by the artist as “old school, Detroity, Moodymann and Theo Parrish-inspired”, Fragments pays tribute to the glory days of deep house. The track ‘Shadows’ itself sounds ripped from Parrish’s First Floor, with signature rising synths and click-clack drums, though Rakei’s vocals make the track sound much more updated than Parrish’s debut, released over 20 years ago. The track writhes in nostalgia yet upholds all the glossy elements of modern house.

The surreal music video is a dizzying collection of snapshots; shadows, silhouettes, and crowds meander and duplicate themselves into grids and gauzes. It is hard to tell if Mr. Rakei himself makes an appearance in the video, all the more adding to the music video’s disorienting feel.

Directed by BWTV, the video for “Shadows” emulates their previous video-making styles, comprising of distorted clips in a retro style, though typically such clips will be overlayed on footage of artists. Their video for Man of Moon’s “Strangers” video read like a broken VCR tape, whose real had been sunburnt only in the best, most aesthetically pleasing spots. Their style befits artists like Bonobo, whose staccato deep house drums befit the choppy visual style.

Bonobo’s Fragments album is his first in four years, since 2017s Migration that landed him a number one spot on the dance album charts. Certain album singles that were release prior to Fragments went on to see huge popularity and acclaim, with “Rosewood” alone earning a number three spot on Spotify’s Best Electronic Songs of 2021.

Speaking on the album, Bonobo discusses the sonic influences that went into this project: “It’s all come full circle now — that emotional rave music. I think there’s some really fun stuff happening at the moment; this resurgence of breakbeat, like the slow, deconstructed junglist kind of stuff.” In an interview with DJMag for their cover feature last year, Bonobo praises Overmono with spearheading this new, welcome trend in UK dance: “They’ve done some amazing stuff. I love that approach to it, where it’s stripped down but emotional… it’s almost a throwback to people like Mike Paradinas, that Rephlex era of breakbeats. That was something I was into.”

Bonobo released his latest single “Otomo” from the upcoming, seventh studio album Fragments. The album is out on 14th January and can be pre-ordered here.

The new, dynamic single features O’Flynn, who co-produced it and turned Bonobo’s sample of a “Bulgarian choir – called 100 Kaba-Gaidi - into a dramatic breakdown and beat drop“. The new track is the most groovy hip-shaking one that the producer ever put on tape. “The song coming together also helped to remind Green of the sense of dancefloor abandon and surging crowds that he had so crucially missed” states the press release.

Simon Green (aka Bonobo) said on the new release in a statement: “Otomo’ began with a sample of a Bulgarian choir. Melodically it was working well but needed a dynamic shift. I asked my friend O’Fllynn for input. He sent it back with a dance floor ready drum section. It’s one of my favorites from the album. I’ve been playing it all year in my dj sets, there’s already a huge response and a feeling of immediate familiarity”.

O’Flynn added: “Simon messaged me last year with a track he was working on and asked for some feedback. I took a punt and asked for the stems to try some ideas on. The tune had this big choir sample and chords in – I went to work trying to contrast that choir with something much harder to try and change the context, using the choir and chords as this kind of relief to this big percussive 808 drop. Luckily Simon liked what I did and we developed the tune from there”.

O’Flynn shared in a statement how to be asked for feedback from Green caught him off guard: “So I had this driving force and pressure to come up with something that could take the idea in a new direction and hit the high bar Simon sets with all his productions”.

You can listen to “Otomo” below.

Last month the producer released singles “Rosewood” and “Tides” featuring Jamila Woods. The second track has been described as “blissfull’ by Clash and has been single of the week in The Observer.

The upcoming album will feature other musicians like Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakel and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Talking about his work process Bonobo shared with Rolling Stone: “Usually part of the process is you work on something and you go out and play it that weekend”. That way, “you can really tell when a tune dies on the dancefloor. It’s invaluable.” You think, ‘this is it, this is the club track! Then it falls flat.’” And on the flip side, “some things really get a big reaction when you’re least expecting it” – he continues.

The new album will feature guest artists like Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O’Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. The upcoming release has been described by the artist as his most emotionally intense work to date. “It’s about the dancefloor in many ways about how I remembered all over again how much I loved crowds and movement and people connecting with each other” – said Bonobo in a statement.

Fragments is fated to be “one of the crossover electronic records of the year“. “Its electronic sounds are more powerfully hypnotic, the beauty of acoustic instruments is more exquisitely realised, the two are interwoven more totally – and the songs are unforgettable.” The album has been produced during hard times of pandemic when as many artists “he was struggling to get his ideas out“. “From just pushing a kickdrum around on a computer screen, going off, making a cup of tea, then pushing it round some more” – he explains the process “it was chaotic but you could exert some degree of control over just how chaotic it should be“.

Bonobo started off his music journey in 1999 by making trip-hop music which quickly expanded to more upbeat tracks. From small clubs in Brighton, he accelerated into huge arenas filled with a live band and worked alongside big musical names like Erykah Badu, Ólafur Arnalds and Jon Hopkins. He has done remixes for Michael Kiwanuka, Gorillaz, George Fitzgerald and London Grammar.

Green has received three Grammy nominations, sold-out London’s Alexandra Palace three times as well as Denver’s Red Rock Amphitheatre. He played all major festivals from Glastonbury through Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound and Fuji Rock to Coachella. His last album Migration from 2017 reached the top 5 in UK Charts.

Bonobo has collaborated with Olafur Arnalds on ‘Loom’, the fourth single to be released from Arnalds’ upcoming album some kind of peace, due for release on November 6 via Mercury KX. The English musician, producer and DJ has been a friend of Arndalds’ for a few years. ‘Loom’ came together after a camping trip in the Icelandic Highlands, which you can almost hear as the setting.

‘Loom’ is both gentle and urgent, built around one repetitive refrain. It builds intensely, and then everything falls away, leaving the piano and a whisper of unintelligible lyrics. It carries the listener along at every turn.

Speaking of the whole experience of putting together ‘Loom’, Arnalds says, “I am a long time fan of Bonobo and have been fortunate enough to get to know Simon as a friend in the last few years. Last year we spent a couple of days in the studio, after traveling and camping in the Icelandic highlands, with no intention other than to spend some quality time with music. Later, as I started working on the album, I kept coming back to that one piece, ‘Loom’, as it felt like the perfect album opener. We kept working on it remotely early this spring and the end result is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

Bonobo (real name: Simon Green) said this, “’Loom’ was one of the pieces we worked on together during that time. It was a real honour to create something with Ólafur. A friend and someone I admire greatly.”

Loom ft. @si_bonobo

— Ólafur Arnalds (@OlafurArnalds) October 13, 2020

‘Loom’ is almost completely the other end of the spectrum to Bonobo’s previous collaboration: ‘Heartbreak’, with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. First shared at the end of September, this is a disco-driven, 70s inspired, NYC track through and through, and you can hardly imagine it in the Icelandic highlands. In fact, ‘Heartbreak’ will become the first 12” to be shared on Bonobo’s new label OUTLIER, on November 13. His consistent versatility is inspiring.

Bonobo has certainly been stirring these last few months – until recently, his latest project was his own studio album, Migration, released in 2017. Now, as of October, he has shared two new collaborations, a record label, and even a recent remix of Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka’s ‘Final Days’ – Bonobo’s first remix since 2016.

Arnalds is also busy in the run up to some kind of peace; he has shared ‘Woven Song’, ‘We Contain Multitudes’ and ‘Back To The Sky’ (a collaboration with JFDR) already. some kind of peace will come out on November 6. Fans won’t have to wait long to see it live (virtually, anyway); he has been announced as the closing act of the first night of Iceland Airwaves’ online festival, Live From Reykjavík, on November 13 at 11pm.

Simon Green, better known as Bonobo, has given an interview to The Independent from his current base in LA. Green covers a host of topics including his new album Migration (which is slated for release on 13th January), life in LA, and what it’s like to look back at his homeland from the other side of the pond.

Green isn’t alone in having ditched London for LA, he explains that, ‘There are so many people here,’ including Jon Hopkins whom Green enlisted to work on Migration’s title track. He actually paints quite a picture of the chilled Californian lifestyle for exiled Brits, revealing, ‘we were hanging out and I was playing him ideas… I created all the little loops that it starts with – they’re all randomly generated – and set them at random and had Jon improvise. And that was the idea… to have the pianist improvising to this algorithm. We did about three takes from start to finish and kept it as it was.’ Indeed, Green compares this relaxed and creative atmosphere favourably with his previous home in New York, saying, ‘It feels like there are more reasons to be here [in LA], not just musical ones, for the soul as well. There’s a good vibe here at the minute, it’s having a moment.’ The rest of California has also had an impact on Green who loves Death Valley and has used it in the artwork for his new music, ‘because it’s so alien compared to where I’m from. From being in the UK… well all the places I’ve lived have had quite lush landscapes. And this is Martian… I’m trying to get amongst it as much as I can.’

In terms of the sound of his new music, Green seems to want Bonobo to move sonically just as he has moved geographically, renouncing his earlier jazz influences because, I don’t know if it’s where my head is at right now,’ and adding, ‘I’m always trying to find new things that I haven’t done before. I felt like I had a genuine learning curve on this record, diving into aspects of production that I’d not really understood before. I had a lot of people coming through the studio as well, which is the other thing about LA, there’s this exchange of ideas which I hadn’t had for a while. We were just messing around and trying to learn some stuff.’

Green talks effusively about his new home, but how does he feel about the one he left? He’s returning soon to rehearse before heading out to Europe for his upcoming tour, and he reflected on the direction Britain has taken since he left, saying, ‘Fabric, Brexit… it’s hard to get a proper perspective and I feel a sort of guilt, like I should be standing there with my people. I was back at the Hydra a few weeks ago and that still felt like a proper rave though. The will to still go out is there, and that’s important.’

Of course, Fabric has now re-opened, and Bonobo’s forthcoming sixth album will be on us before we know it, on the 13th January, so the future is not all doom and gloom.

DJ and producer Bonobo aka Simon Green has announced plans to release a new album in 2016.

The Brighton native electronic artist announced his plans for a new album via a straight to the point tweet, which you can see below:

New album coming in 2016

— Bonobo (@sibonobo) January 1, 2016

Bonobo was pretty quiet over 2015, with his last release dropping a little over a year ago now with 2014’s Flashlight EP. His last album, however, was back in 2013, with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful North Borders, which brought together Burial vibes and Mount Kimbie-esque percussion in an album that sounded as intelligent as the name Bonobo implies.

This will be his sixth studio album, and although very little is known about it, the assumption is that it will follow the rest in being released on Ninja Tunes Records.
