Over the course of this weekend, We Out Here Festival is taking place digitally under the new title ‘We Out Here: Online & On Air’. The event is free with registered access, though attendees are encouraged to make a donation. All proceeds will go to charities associated with the Black Lives Matter cause ‘as part of [their] ongoing responsibility as a musical organisation to raise awareness, celebrate & keep the focus on supporting Black communities.‘

The PDF lineup is available below, featuring sets from established DJs such as Mr Scruff and Auntie Flo as well as lesser known names such as See Thru Hands. Afro-beat jazz band Kokoroko will be playing the “Main Stage” on Saturday evening at 8.30pm, which will be a treat for fans who watched them last year at the festival in Abbots Ripton, former home of Secret Garden Party.

We Out Here Festival was started only last year by music industry legend Giles Peterson. A successful broadcaster, DJ and record label owner, there is not much that Peterson hasn’t tried his hand at. His music taste is global and various but he has a particular interest in jazz, hip-hop and soul. Now he can add virtual festival co-ordinator to his list of achievements! Peterson’s independent record label, Brownswood Recordings, showcases talented underground musicians from all over the world, many of whom are on the bill this weekend. We Out Here already has an impressive reputation, hailed as a lively celebration of the ‘UK’s grassroots jazz scene‘ that isn’t limited to live performances.

Peterson definitely wants his audiences to have a good time: the Evening Standard describes him ‘bounc[ing] around‘ the festival grounds last year spreading joy. But he is also keen for his festival-goers to engage in the more intellectual and serious side of music. Last year there were talks from musicians such as Saxophonist Gary Bartz and creative workshops to attend. This year there will be a talk on Sunday evening entitled ‘Politics of Joy on the Dance Floor‘ and also one on ‘Cross Cultural Collaboration‘. Additionally, there will be plenty of workshops such as an online music production class for young people aged 9-18.

We Out Here is not the only festival that has made the decision to go digital this summer. Tomorrowland paved the way back in July with a virtual weekend that was met with positive reviews; one drawback mentioned however was occasional difficulties with sound and loading. Hopefully technical difficulties will be kept to a minimum this weekend so that we can enjoy the likes of Dele Sosemi and Amahla without having to unplug the router!

David Whitely, widely known as DJ Sideman on 1xtra, has officially quit his position at the National broadcasting station. The news follows BBC allowing a racial slur on the radio, specifically the use of the N word in a recent news report.

The disgusting racial slur was dropped during a BBC report that described a recent racist attack in Bristol. In spite of the awful slur provoking over 18,600 rightful complaints from the public, the BBC initially defended the use of the word.

Sideman announced the news of his departure on the 8th of August via social media. Sharing a poignant post to Instagram entitled ‘I can’t look the other way’, Sideman explains his reasoning behind leaving BBC 1xtra.

Sideman explains in the Instagram video that he has “thought long and hard about what I’m about to say and what it means” and “on this occasion I just don’t think that I can look the other way.” When speaking on the systematic racism present in the media and society as a whole, Sideman says “that there will need to be a lot of learning and tearing down of certain building blocks of our society that took a long time to build up.”

Continuing his speech on the pressing matter, Sideman states“the BBC sanctioning the N-word on national television by a white person is something I cannot work with.” Sideman’s Instagram video can be watched in full here.

Generating a whopping 310,000 views and 5,829 comments, Sideman’s post was met with a strong show of support from the public. Sideman’s announcement has also garnered support from various industry players.

Eddie Nestor, esteemed actor turned Radio DJ, implied that he was drafting an open letter to the BBC following the incident. Fellow Radio DJ Charlie Sloth also spoke on Sideman’s departure, saying “I admire and respect you David! Well done for standing up for what you believe is right! You’re a King!! This world needs people like you!”

Disappointedly, the BBC’s initial treatment of this sensitive incident was wholly inadequate. In their first official statement, there was no accountability taken for the use of racist vocabulary. A spokesperson for Radio 1xtra stated “Sideman is an incredibly talented DJ. Obviously we are disappointed that he has taken this decision. We absolutely wish him well for the future. The door is always open for future projects.”

Welp! It only took 19,000 complaints, serious Twitter backlash and a member of BBC staff quitting his job!!! ….But we finally got what we should have had in the first place….

Following further complaints, the BBC has now apologised for their initial defence of using the word – a word that should not be used, no matter the context. Tony Hall, Director General of the BBC, released the following statement in an email to staff: “The BBC now accepts that we should have taken a different approach at the time of broadcast and we are very sorry for that. We will now be strengthening our guidance on offensive language across our output.”

Hall concluded the apology with the promise to action positive changes. Hall stated “Every organisation should be able to acknowledge when it has made a mistake. We made one here.
Originally set to drop on the 10th July 2020, Glass Animals postponed the release of Dreamland in respect to the Black Lives Matter movement. Opening with a symphony of celestial organs, the heavenly title track sets the album’s lucid tone. Frontman Dave Bayley’s hypnotic vocals sing “Pulling down backstreets deep in your head/Slipping through dreamland like a tourist”. A sixteen track journey, Dreamland’s title track entices the listener down the rabbit hole, and you go willingly.

Tangerine, a song about a broken relationship, playfully misleads you with its buoyant synth and vibrant backing track. The wistful lyrics, such as “I wish I could show you more of yourself/I wish I could make you somebody else” and “I’m beggin’ hands, knees, please/Tangerine, come on back to me” heightens the album’s introspective, personal nature.

Glass Animals’ union with talented rapper Denzel Curry on Tokyo Drifting delivers a sharp, hard-hitting track that stands out from the rest of the album. A captivating blend of two diverse sonic palettes, Tokyo Drifting showcases the many moods of Glass Animals.

The album shifts to a spooky tone on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. A reference to the 1994 animated talk show with the same name, the song is dark, beguiling bop. Bayley sings haunting lyrics like “Really think that metal gonna make you safe?/Playing peek-a-boo with the devil these days” that allude to gun violence.

BBC Children in Need have announced that they will be matching Stormzy’s £10m pledge to help fight racial inequalities in the UK. Children in Need will also be partnering up with BBC Radio 1Xtra to develop programmes to support young black people.

The announcement was made by Dotty on The 1Xtra Breakfast Show this morning. Dotty spoke about Stormzy’s pledge and said he “inspired a movement.” She went on to explain the plan, saying; “BBC Children in Need will work with young people and 1Xtra to develop a plan that will support individuals, organisations and groups in all areas of the UK, and fund a range of activites that will enhance young black lives.”

BBC Radio 1Xtra will also have a programme to develop radio presenters and also tell the stories of the communities who receive the funding from Children in Need.

Children in Need will donate this money over ten years. The funding will be available to support young social entrepreneurs in making a difference in their local communities. It will also enable access to education and learning to develop young people’s skills and confidence for work. The funding will be delegated by a panel of young people and volunteers with direct experience of the Black British experience.

Speaking about the plan, Kenny Imafidon, trustee of BBC Children in Need, said: “I can speak for the entire Board of Trustees and all the staff at BBC Children in Need when I say, we were really inspired by Stormzy’s pledge. I am excited about this new fund and I truly believe that this is the beginning of greater things to come, as we continue on our mission to support children and young people most in need.”

It is not surprising that Stormzy has inspired so many others to step up, as he is constantly working to fight inequalities in the UK. Last month, Stormzy announced his pledge to donate £10m over ten years, which is half of his net worth, to “organisations, charities and movements that are committed to fighting racial inequality, justice reform and Black empowerment within the UK.” He has also stated that even though he is announcing this ten-year plan, it will be a lifetime commitment.

In 2018, Stormzy offered to pay for two black students to go to Cambridge University and also has a deal with Penguin to help young black authors get published in the UK.

Stormzy will be donating £10m to support causes which are commited to fighting racial inequality, justice reform and Black empowerment, over the next 10 years.

Children in Need currently funds over 3000 charities and projects in the UK that help disadvantaged children and young people. The charity already has funds that address the specific challenges that face young black people but want this additional funding to go even further to create opportunities.

I look after a breadth of what were previously ‘urban’ genres and it will allow us to have broader conversations around creativity and artists. Honestly, I think there are bigger problems that we need to resolve, but we will be talking about music in genres going forward.”

This decision stems from an open letter written last month by black music executives from Sony Music, UMG, Warner Music Group, and the Black Music Coalition to “Chairmen, CEOs, Presidents and Music Industry Leaders” to introduce measures aimed at destabilising the systemic racism embedded within the UK music industry. They also called for the words ‘urban music’ be dropped as an industry term and be replaced by ‘black music.’

Following this Republic Records announced last month that they would no longer be using the word. The Grammys Awards also changed the name of the ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ award category to ‘Best Progressive R&B Album.’

While the resurgance of the #BlackLivesMatter movement is opening the door for these conversations, this is not a new issue. After he won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2020, Tyler, The Creator spoke backstage about how he felt his award was miscategorized as rap due to the colour of his skin. He said; “Whenever we – and I mean guys that look like me – do anything that’s genre-bending or anything, they always put it in a rap or urban category. I don’t like that ‘urban’ word. It’s just a politically correct way to say the N-word … why can’t we just be in pop?”

Adele White, an A&R for Island Records, spoke to Music Week about Universal’s disscussions over the word ‘urban’ too but highlighted that ‘urban’ is sometimes a positive word to use. “There’s a conversation going on internally at Universal. In some territories, ‘urban’ is seen as a very positive thing, I believe it has different meanings in different countries. In the UK, it’s been used as a PC term for Black people that felt uncomfortable. I think people feel it’s stigmatised. People may feel that urban isn’t given the same respect in the UK or, I don’t know, not treated the same. Maybe we don’t need it as much, but I know it’s important in other territories.”

She continued by saying; “If we’re working with Black artists, there’s nothing wrong with saying that, in the same way there’s nothing wrong with saying dance or indie. ‘Black’ isn’t a bad word, to specialise in music that comes from a diaspora of people that you may understand better for whatever reason. Black music has always existed and there’s nothing wrong with saying ‘black music’ or ‘music by black artists’, it’s positive.”

On the 1st July 2020, National treasure Sir Ringo Starr confirmed his plans to host and perform in an upcoming Livestream fundraising concert. Marking the living legend’s 80th birthday, Ringo’s Big Birthday Show is set to take place on 7th July 2020 and will be streamed live from Starr’s official YouTube channel at 5 pm PST.

Starr has recruited some of music’s generational giants for the benefit, including American musician Sheryl Crow, singer-songwriter Ben Harper, and none other than longtime friend and Beatles bandmate, Sir Paul McCartney.

The fundraiser will also include previously unseen performance footage of Ringo and Paul during the height of The Beatles era, as well as exclusive at-home performances from the stellar lineup. Famed for enlisting amazing lineups year after year, the 2019 ‘Peace and Love’ included David Lynch, Nils Lofgren and Benmont Tench.

Divided between four vital charities, donations from the Livestream fundraiser will be split between Black Lives Matter Global Network, WaterAid, The David Lynch Foundation, and MusiCares. Starr also showed his support towards the Black Lives Matter movement, recently writing on his official twitter page: “The Beatles always stood for equal rights and justice, and I’ve never stopped working for peace & love ever since. #BlackLivesMatter, #PeaceIsPossible, I send my peace love & continuous support to everyone marching and speaking up for justice & a better world”

This is not the first birthday gig the Beatles bandmate has hosted: for the past 12 years, Starr has orchestrated the world-famous ‘Peace and Love’ event in his adopted city of Los Angeles, California. Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, this year’s installment of ‘Peace and Love’ marks the first at-home Livestream of the famous celebration.

In the wake of his milestone birthday, the British superstar took to Instagram today with news of the Livestream fundraiser to 846,000 overjoyed followers. The post featured a video of Starr being photographed and posing with his classic peace signs stance. Starr was also displayed repping various ‘Peace and Love’ branded face masks, the video itself conveying colourful cartoon animations reminiscent of 1960’s psychedelia.

In the short video, Starr relayed his reasoning behind altering the 2020 installment of ‘Peace and Love’ to an at-home Livestream. Starr delivered a positive message about the event to fans worldwide: “At 12 noon, July 7th, 2020, you go ‘Peace and Love’. ‘Peace and Love’. That’s all I ask. Wherever you are; on a bus, down the mine, in a spaceship, in a rocket”

The already popular post was met with a delightful response from Starr’s giant Instagram following, receiving over 72,000 likes in just one day. The post was accompanied by the following caption: “Ringo’s Birthday Update! Ringo’s 80th birthday is just a week away!

Tulisa Contostavlos has issued a second apology to Misha B following claims she had made about facing discrimination while being a contestant on season 8 in 2011. The apology comes in the form of an Instagram post after her initial response was seen as defensive. Tulisa admitted that her first response was less about Misha and more about her own emotions after receiving death threats.

In the statement Tulisa said; “I fully acknowledge the pain I caused & fully accept people should be angry about it. I can state again there was nothing racial in my thought process. When I referred to Misha as being feisty & competitive that was a reflection of myself because I saw myself in Misha.” She continued by saying “However, I totally understand that it made Misha feel a certain way, as a young black girl hearing it from a young white girl on a huge platform, living in the oppressed society we do, full of racial slurs and undertones, not knowing my thought process.”

She defended her actions by stating that when another contestant had come to her crying about Misha’s actions, she went into fight mode and decided to call her out on air. “I ran out there thinking, I’m doing the right thing, I have to call her out.”

Misha B, full name, Misha Byran, spoke out recently on Instagram live about the ‘bully’ label the X Factor painted her with while she was on the show, perpetuating the ‘angry black woman’ narrative. Tulisa called her out live on the air and said she was making mean comments to other contestants backstage, which was swiftly backed up by fellow judge Louis Walsh.

Misha revealed that she was inspired to speak out about this because of the Black Lives Matter Movement, saying “Seeing the continuous mistreatment of my brothers and sisters all around the world has reawakened the PTSD that I have worked tirelessly to uproot and I know I do not stand alone on this.” She spoke honestly about what she describes as the most painful experience of her life; “They saw an opportunity to tear down a black girl that came from a broken home and worked together to sabotage my career by orchestrating lies upon lies.”

However, Misha was not impressed by Tulisa’s statement. In a now deleted tweet, Mischa wrote; “I heard you the first time LOUD AND CLEAR. You can stop shouting now Karen. You and I have zero things in common. Two different kinds of women. My upbringing and yours are totally different. Also the c**ns and uncle Toms you have recruited for damage control can’t save you.” ‘Karen’ is a name used to describe white women who are obnoxious, insufferable and often times racist.

A spokesperson for The X Factor released a statement saying “We are currently looking into this matter and are reaching out to Misha to discuss important issues she has raised. The welfare of contestants is our priority and we are committed to diversity and equality.”

But despite being vocal in his support for the movement, when television presenter Piers Morgan fell foul of the latter yesterday there was no self-assessment in sight.

While perhaps well intentioned, Mills was thoroughly unimpressed with the Good Morning Britain host’s approach to the subject, responding: “Am I the black spokesperson?”. Along with questions like ‘can I touch your hair?’ and ‘where are you really from?’, it’s important to note that expectations to speak for an entire race is a typical microaggression frequently experienced by people of colour.

Trying to diffuse the tension, Mills joked that maybe Morgan was considering him a black spokesperson since he had his afro out and was looking “a bit natural and that”, though when met with scoffs, Mills instead appealed for he and Morgan to “keep it calm”. “I’ve got a bunch of views” he repeated, “but right now is not the time”. This nonetheless did not stop Morgan from accusing his guest of reacting “very aggressively to a very polite question”, to which Mills wryly looked off-camera to say “This is what happens: I become the aggressive black man! I just wanted to be nice, and look how he’s behaving”. Seemingly unphased by the interaction, Morgan stated that his intentions had been to just give the artist “the opportunity” to share his views “if [he] wanted to”, a sticking post he returned to when confronted on social media.

In response to one Twitter user ridiculing Morgan for being “mugged off”, he replied: “I didn’t feel ‘mugged off’ I asked Dizzee Rascal about Black Lives Matter and he said he didn’t want to talk about it”. What is conveniently ignored here, is that in truth the dialogue did not initially begin with a question but with the instruction: “try and articulate to people what Black Lives Matter actually means”.

With record stores only opening their doors on June 15th, independent music businesses have been some of the hardest hit during the pandemic. During this time, some of music’s most innovative players have used their social media platforms to show support against recent industry strain.

The latest British artists to do so are Circa Waves, with their recent live stream on Saturday 20th June. The band posted a live performance on their Instagram TV page, as part of the fundraiser Love Record Stores.

A socially distanced gig of course, band members Keiran Shudall, Sam Rourke, Joe Falconer, Colin Jones and Sam Plummer gave separate performances, each brightening our feeds as the band show their allegiance with the Love Record Store Movement.

Covering The La’s 1988 smash hit, the Liverpudlian indie band delivered a stripped down but equally chirpy rendition of the iconic ‘There She Goes’. Opening with Shudall equipped with guitar and quirky cowboy hat, to then see Jones tenderly tapping both a blanket-covered rugby ball and box of CoCo Pops, it is hard to dispute their creative initiative!

The video clip was met with joy from fans and boasts over 11,000 views. The Liverpudlian quintet’s caption reiterated their love and support for the Love Record Store fundraiser: “We loved making this! Felt like we were a band again! Link in bio”

In recent times, coronavirus has knocked treasured independent record stores to the brink of survival. Their business solely now online, our beloved and profitable record store events such as in-store gigs and meet and greets have been forced to rearrangement, or cancellation.

Included in this virus-related postponement is Record Store Day. With a revised date of the Saturday 20th June 2020, UK Coordinator for Record Store Day 2020 Megan Page released the following statement to Record store Day 2020 UK:

“There is no perfect solution. There is no easy answer. We’ve decided that the best of all possible moves is to change the date of Record Store Day to Saturday, June 20th. We think this gives stores around the world the best chance to have a profitable, successful Record Store Day, while taking into consideration the recommendations of doctors, scientists, the World Health Organization, and the need to be good citizens to both local and worldwide communities”

Over a 24 hour long period, Record Store Day 2020 included a sensory feast of online live performances, DJ sets, interviews and poetry readings were streamed to fans worldwide, in a bid to stimulate the recently gutting decline in vinyl record sales. On the Love Record Store website, the charity page is a “Homage to the world’s best record stores”, whilst also assisting other charities: “we will be supporting the following charities: #SaveOurVenues, #Covid-19 Relief Fund and #BlackLivesMatter”.

Yesterday, on Monday 22nd June, Harry Styles, along with many other artists, joined a number of music industry workers in creating the non-profit organisation ‘Black Music Action Coalition’ (BMAC). Their united goal is to dismantle the systemic racism which still exists in the music industry, both in the UK and USA.

Artists who have pledged their support to BMAC include Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Khalid, Post Malone, and Mary J. Blige, while the founders are music executives from various labels and management companies. Styles has not yet commented on this matter specifically apart from sharing the BMAC logo on Twitter – he is most likely working behind the scenes – but he has spoken out previously regarding the Black Lives Matter movement, even going to protests in LA.

This follows on from Black Out Tuesday, which took place on 2nd June, to raise awareness and find solutions for the inequality, using the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused. Founders were inspired by the companies involved, and hope that they can work together to create change. These companies include Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, and Sony Music, as well as Apple Music, YouTube, and BMG.

Eloquently detailing their work, the organisation posted an open letter on all online platforms, stating: “We created BMAC to address long standing racial inequities in the business, the financial impact of those inequities for both Black artists and executives, and ways we can work with you urgently to solve these problems.”

It went on to explain how they will take action, announcing that they will meet with every company’s CEO and foundation board to develop a plan, though they have already started by educating their thousands of followers on social media. BMAC have made multiple posts since yesterday, with statements such as “Protect Black lives. Protect Black music.”

Rolling Stone shared their thoughts, saying that the music business is “arguably kept afloat by black music and black creators,” a point also made by record labels on Black Out Tuesday. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Binta Brown (founder and manager of Chance the Rapper), said “We must work together on this. Systemic problems require systemic solutions, and that means each of us must be active in working together to create a just, fair and equitable society for all.”

Any artist, songwriter, producer, manager, agent, lawyer, executive or other passionate industry professional can join to help dismantle racism within the music business. Find more information on the BMAC website.
