Benson Boone cancelled one of his shows in Birmingham less than one hour before he was meant to go on stage.

The singer was meant to perform at the Utilita Arena on Saturday as part of his ‘American Heart’ World Tour, and shared on his Instagram story that the show needed to be rescheduled.

His statement said, “I am so sorry but I will not be able to perform tonight, I have tried everything I can to revive my voice, but I cannot give you the show I’d like to be able to give you with the condition of my throat right now.”

He continued by saying, “This is genuinely the crappiest feeling, I am so sorry, I promise you I will do everything in my power to make it up to you. I’ll update you guys as soon as I can. Thank you for everything you do. I love you guys so much.”

The venue also released a statement confirming the concert was cancelled and that they were “working through all possible options to reschedule.”

“We understand how disappointing this is and sincerely apologise for the extremely short notice and inconvenience caused.”

The cancellation of the show comes a few days after the singer performed in Glasgow, and videos circulated on TikTok with Benson Boone complaining about his voice.

Other TikTok videos recorded after the concert in Glasgow show a member of his team informing the crowd that he couldn’t speak to them as he is ill and he would be examined by a doctor.

“As you guys know, Benson is a little ill. He can’t say a single word. He has to go and see a doctor tomorrow so that he can perform in Birmingham.”

“He’ll come out and wave at you guys. He can’t sign anything or take personal pictures. I told him we weren’t even going to come out here but you know how he is, he is nicer than I am. He wants to make sure he acknowledges you guys. But, he has to save his voice.”

Black Sabbath, pioneers of heavy metal, brought their journey as a band to a close with their farewell concert ‘Back To The Beginning’ yesterday, 5 July. Held in their hometown of Birmingham, the concert marked the end of over five decades of genre-defining music. The final performance took place at Villa Park Stadium, packed with 40,000 fans, with 5.8 million live-streaming the event, and a host of rock icons.

The farewell concert featured the band’s classic line-up: Bill Ward, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who led the band through a setlist of their most iconic tracks. This concert marked the first time the quartet had performed together since 2005. Although Black Sabbath had hosted several ‘final shows’ before, in 1992, 1999 and 2017, due to the progression of Osbourne’s Parkinson’s disease, it is likely that ‘Back To The Beginning’ will truly be the last time the original Black Sabbath line-up perform together.

Osbourne hadn’t played a full show since 2018 before last night, due to undergoing multiple surgeries and health complications. In preparation for the show, Ozzy Osbourne had ‘heavy training’. In an interview with Loudwire, Osbourne said: “I haven’t done anything for, jeez, it’s gonna be seven years,” Ozzy explained. “I’ve been through all these surgeries. It really is like starting from scratch.”

The city of Birmingham has embraced the band’s homecoming with pride and anticipation, dubbing this summer the ‘Summer Of Sabbath’. Birmingham City Council awarded the band members the Freedom of the City Award, an honour given to highly respected members of the community. As well as this, there’s a 120ft Black Sabbath mural being painted on Navigation Street, an Ozzy Osbourne exhibition at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and a ballet set to Black Sabbath’s music, which will run from 18-27 September.

Ozzy Osbourne was seated in a bat-themed throne during his performances, having recently lost his ability to walk. He performed his songs ‘I Don’t Know’, ‘Mr. Crowley’, ‘Suicide Solution’, ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’ and ‘Crazy Train’ to a roaring reception.

The 11-hour concert was packed with massive names in rock and heavy metal, including Halestorm, Metallica, Alice In Chains, Guns N’ Roses, as well as members of Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones and many more. The event was hosted by Aquaman actor Jason Momoa, and featured a special performance by Jack Black singing his rendition of Ozzy’s song ‘Mr. Crowley’. Many of the bands featured covered Black Sabbath’s songs, such as Tool sharing their rendition of ‘Hand Of Doom’, and Metallica taking on ‘Hole In The Sky’ and ‘Johnny Blade’. Guns N’ Roses also performed their song ‘It’s Alright’, the first time they’d done so since 1992.

Black Sabbath closed the show, with their classic hits ‘War Pigs’, ‘N.I.B.’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Paranoid’. The day ended with cake for Ozzy, and fireworks lighting up the stadium. Osbourne closed the show by saying “It’s the last song ever. Your support has enabled us to live an amazing lifestyle… thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Overall, the concert raised £140 million for charity, and the proceeds will be shared equally between Acorns Children’s Hospice, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Cure Parkinson’s.

Hotel prices have been rising drastically in Birmingham in anticipation for Black Sabbath’s farewell concert “Back To The Beginning” which will be taking place in July. The concert, now fully sold out, was announced earlier this month and includes a lineup of metal icons which will be gracing the Villa Park stage to bid farewell to the Black Sabbath stars, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward, whom will be reuniting to say goodbye to each other and to fans, playing their first show together in over twenty years.

The concert will also include a small set from Ozzy Osbourne himself, and will be closed by the iconic band. The lineup also includes musicians from around the world will also be on hand to pay tribute, including Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), David Draiman (Disturbed), Duff McKagan & Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Jake E Lee, Jonathan Davis (Korn), K.K. Downing, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Mike Bordin (Faith No More), Rudy Sarzo, Sammy Hagar, Scott Ian (Anthrax), II (Sleep Token), Papa V Perpetua (Ghost), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Wolfgang Van Halen, and Zakk Wylde.

Because the concert, which is already sold out, will draw an extensive amount of people to Birmingham, Birmingham Live reports that hotels near Villa Park, where the legendary metal band will perform their final show on July 5, have increased their rates by as much as 725%.

The article offers a comparison of The Apollo Hotel on Hagley Road, which is a prime example of this surge. A ‘superior’ double room without breakfast was listed at £619 for the night of the concert on Hotels.com. In contrast, the same room for the previous Saturday, booked through the same platform, was priced at just £75.

Birmingham Live also notes a Travelodge at Broadway Plaza, 14 minutes from the venue, where a room priced at £53.99 on June 28 surges to £319.99 on July 5. Likewise, in Yardley, a 22-minute drive from Villa Park, a Travelodge room that costs £47.99 the week before Back to the Beginning will rise to £303.99 on the night of the event.

The late poet Benjamin Zephaniah will also be honoured with the ‘City of Birmingham Medal’.

The award is largely symbolic today, though historically it allowed recipients to own land and trade freely in the days of feudal lords. It is a prestigious honour, granted only after a majority vote at a special council meeting. Most of the figures honoured are either from the military or local politics, however the more recognisable recipients include conductor Sir Simon Rattle, members of the Cadbury family, and four former UK Prime Ministers.

Black Sabbath, the heavy metal pioneers who formed in Birmingham in 1968, have long been celebrated in their hometown. The founding members—Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—are already commemorated on Birmingham’s Walk of Stars, as is the band, celebrating the lineups that didn’t feature all four founders. Taking their name from a horror film featuring Boris Karloff, Black Sabbath were called “the Beatles of heavy metal” by Rolling Stone magazine, and tracks like ‘Paranoid’, ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Crazy Train’ would go on to influence the next generations of heavy metal.

Both Black Sabbath and Benjamin Zephaniah represent the best of Birmingham, a city often overlooked due to its industrial heritage. Both were instrumental in pushing boundaries in their respective fields, and have given the city figures to be proud of. While Black Sabbath put Birmingham at the heart of heavy metal, Zephaniah made poetry accessible to all, sharing stories of struggle and triumph.

Ozzy Osbourne has had his fair share of ups and downs in recent months. The singer had been forced to pull out of California’s Power Trip festival due to ill health but then, the metal legend has also announced he intends to record another album and tour in 2024. Now, Osbourne’s wife Sharon has announced that she is working on a memorabilia museum to open in his native Birmingham in the near future.

Announcing the news on the family’s new Osbournes Podcast, Sharon shared that she has been actively busy trying to get her husband’s memorabilia together so that such a museum can be opened in Birmingham, although she also confirmed that Ozzy himself has no (as of yet) intentions to relocate back to the UK.

Speaking on the podcast, Sharon told daughter Kelly and Jack, “I’ve been busy trying to get together daddy’s memorabilia for the memorabilia place that we’re opening in Birmingham….he’s having all of his awards [in the museum], all his stage clothes, posters, old posters from [early incarnation of Sabbath] Earth days. I’ve got so much memorabilia. We’re gonna do it totally interactive – every video, every live show of your dad’s, everything there.”It’s more of an educational thing for musicians and artists that wanna see that you can come from nothing, and if you work hard enough this is what you can get.

Sharon further elaborated her vision for the museum, adding, “We’re going to have a café, and in there we’re going to have every instrument you can think of. Music students can come in and we’re gonna do music classes, because there’s no music at schools anymore. We’re gonna get friends, other musicians to come in.”

Birmingham, the origin city of Black Sabbath and, some would argue, the birthplace of heavy metal, has been keen to recognise Ozzy and Black Sabbath in recent months with the honour of naming the giant robotic bull from the 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games being bestowed upon the artist. Guitarist Tony Iommi also made a surprise appearance at The Hippodrome Theatre two weeks ago to inaugurate the city’s premier of Black Sabbath-The Ballet.
Black Sabbath were formed over 50 years ago in Britain’s second largest city in 1968. With their three back to back releases of Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master Of Reality in the early 70s, the band were pioneers of what would become the metal sound and scene and have cemented their place in the annals of its history with their occult imagery and grungy, doom sound.

Currently, there are no further details of an Ozzy museum, however updates are sure to follow in due course.

In his long, storied career as lead guitarist of legendary metal band Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi probably never imagined (even in his most wild imagination) that a prehistoric fossil would be named after him. But the guitarist has just landed himself in palaeontology history after a 469 million year old fossil has been named in his honour.

Great to meet Mats and Esben today and receive an amazing replica of the Iommi fossil! And thanks to Mike Olley and Steve at The Velvet Music Rooms. pic.twitter.com/8vgr99Tx7n

Widely considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time and primary song writer for what most metal fans would consider the seminal and greatest ever band in the genre-Black Sabbath-Tony Iommi has accomplished pretty much everything there is in the world of rock superstardom. Perhaps that is why, when palaeontologist Mats Eriksson discovered a 469 million year old fossil, he thought of the Birmingham based virtuoso-although it probably doesn’t hurt that Eriksson is an avid metal fan himself.

The new species, a pre-historic eel like marine creature, has been dubbed Drepanoistodus Iommii, in honour of what Eriksson considers his all time favourite musician. Eriksson then found himself heading to Birmingham-the home of Iommi and origin of Black Sabbath to present Iommi with a life-size replica model of the fossil.

Iommi himself expressed some shock that a scientist would name a fossil after him but he was also equally humbled by it as well. Speaking about the naming, Iommi said, “when I first heard about this, it was a real shock to hear that a fossil’s been named after me! I’ve had a bit of abuse from from my friends about it who’ve enjoyed calling me an old fossil, but I think it’s great, a real honour. This has to be the weirdest thing that’s ever been named after me but I’m really proud of it and I wanted to thank Mats and his team in person for being such brilliant fans.”

Although Iommi is the latest heavy rock musician to be esteemed in such a way, it’s also not the first time Eriksson has bestowed the honour upon metal musicians with Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse, King Diamond and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead also enshrined. Other fossils have been named after metal music or musicians in the past as well.

Iommi, who was diagnosed with early stage lymphoma over a decade ago, recently described his health as being all in all good and has claimed that his busy lifestyle has kept his overall health in shape. He also recently revealed that a Black Sabbath reunion, with all original members, is not off the table and that perhaps, if everything is right, a show could happen in future. Metal fans will eagerly await that news, should it come to pass.

Just over a decade ago, Swim Deep’s frontman Austin Williams was wistfully singing “Fuck your romance, I wanna pretend/That Jenny Lee Lindberg is my girlfriend”. Now Jenny’s joining the band. Warpaint’s bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg has teamed up with Birmingham indie pop band Swim Deep to add a dark and romantic bassline to a reworked version of the band’s debut single, 2012’s “King City”.

Listen to “King City (Jennylee’s Version)” below:

The band shared on Instagram that the cover art for the single, featuring Williams sitting in his bedroom with a clipping of Lindberg behind him, was taken during the “King City” music video shoot. Williams explained, “Plastered on my wall among other heroes of mine was a cut out of Jenny from the beat magazine i pined over, i had artists i’d look up to, and places i’d like to visit on that wall. talismans to dream next to.”

He nostalgically reminisced, “The song was about fleeing the small towns and cities i was raised in, yet keeping love and admiration for the precious youth i spent there. It was a cocky teenage coming of age anthem with a 4/4 beat which i stole from mgmt kids.”

Williams joked that he “half expected a cease and desist” when Jenny reached out to the band all these years later “but instead we got the best remix i’ve ever heard, the baseline is everything, it’s dark and sexy and i can imagine running through a festival with my mates at 17 years old to it”.

Lindberg also took to Instagram to share her excitement over the collab writing, “i love you guys! my heart feels warm and cozy. and i was super stoked to spin the wheel, and MAKE IT DARKER”.

Past and present members of Swim Deep reunited to tell tales of times past and spin records over some pints for Boogaloo radio on the 27th April. Fans got the chance to sit in during the show held in Highgate courtesy of Dork magazine.

Swim Deep are set to embark on a tour that will take them across the UK from the end of May until mid-June. The tour is in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their debut album Where The Heaven Are We – an essential for British indie kids of the 2010s. The band will be supported by a host of artists including fellow Brum-based indie rockers Jaws, former Palma Violets member Chilli Jesson, London-based trio Sad Boys Club, indie newcomers Overpass, and Irish singer/songwriter Paulric O’Meara. For remaining tickets and more information see here.

In May last year, the Californian neo-psychedelic band Warpaint, which first united on Valentine’s Day all the way back in 2004, released their fourth studio album Radiate Like This. The album was preceded by the singles “Stevie” and “Champion”. Lindberg also released her second solo album in the same month under the name jennylee. The album entitled Heart Tax included a cover of the Fugazi’s “I’m So Tired” originally recorded for Record Store Day in 2020.

Boston alternative punk icons Pixies have announced that they will be returning to the UK in 2023 as part of a new European tour. The band have shared news that they will play several venues in the UK in March, including London’s Roundhouse (you can check out full UK and European tour dates below).

The tour announcement comes after Pixies released their eighth full studio album, Doggerel, in September. The album came out on the Infectious Music label, to largely positive critical response. The release was preceded by the singles “There’s a Moon On”, “Vault of Heaven” and “Dregs of the Wine”. The recording process for the new album was also filmed, becoming a short documentary on the band that was released in June 2022.

In a recent press release discussing the new album, guitarist Joey Santiago said, “This time around we have grown. We no longer have under two-minute songs. We have little breaks, more conventional arrangements but still our twists in there.”

Vocalist/ guitarist Black Francis went on to add, “We’re trying to do things that are very big and bold and orchestrated. The punky stuff, I really like playing it but you just cannot artificially create that shit. There’s another way to do this, there’s other things we can be doing with this extra special energy we’re encountering.”

The new album also marks the first songwriting credits for Joey Santiago on two of its tracks, “Dregs of the Wine” and “Pagan Man”. Vocalist/ guitarist Black Francis said of “Pagan Man“, the album’s final song, “I was not in the mood to compose a lyric because I was already spent, if you will. So Joey wrote the lyric.” He went on to explain that the song was, “an unfinished bit of music that the producer kept insisting that we try again”. Doggerel was recorded in Vermont’s Guildford Sound, an eco-friendly recording studio, with the basis for many songs being the pre-recorded demos Black Francis had created in the time following the band’s seventh album release, 2019’s Beneath the Eyrie.

Check out footage of the band performing their new single, “There’s a Moon On”, live from Manchester’s Band on the Wall earlier this year.
