Speculation began on August 20 after Paul McCartney shared a cryptic Instagram post featuring the numbers one, two, three and four alongside images from the original ‘Anthology’ albums. The teaser quickly fuelled rumours of a fourth instalment.

The original ‘Anthology’  launched in 1995 with ‘Anthology 1’ and an eight-part documentary series. It included archive material as well as the first new Beatles songs since John Lennon’s death. With McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr completing ‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’ from Lennon’s demos under the direction of Jeff Lynne. This was then followed up with new albums ‘Anthology 2’ and ‘Anthology 3’ in 1996.

Nearly 30 years on, the project is being expanded. The documentary has been restored and remastered, with a new Episode Nine featuring unseen footage of McCartney, Harrison and Starr working together on the original ‘Anthology’ in the mid-1990s. The updated series will stream on Disney+ from November 26.

The music component will also be reissued. ‘The Anthology Music Collection’ – originally curated by George Martin – is being re-released as three double albums remastered by Giles Martin. A new ‘Anthology 4’ has also been confirmed, containing 13 previously unreleased demos and session recordings, along with new mixes of ‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’. The collection will be available from November 21 in digital formats, a 12LP vinyl set and an 8CD box set and can be pre-ordered here.

The original ‘Free As A Bird’ music video has been restored for the release. A companion book will accompany the project, featuring recollections from all four Beatles and contributions from close collaborators including Neil Aspinall, George Martin and Derek Taylor. It will include 1,300 photographs, documents, artwork and memorabilia from the band’s archives.

The revival also draws attention to unfinished material linked to ‘Anthology’. John Lennon’s 1978 demo ‘Now And Then’ was initially considered for inclusion in the 1990s but left incomplete. In 2023, McCartney and Starr confirmed they had finished the track using AI-assisted audio restoration, giving it an official release.

The 2025 return of ‘The Beatles Anthology’ brings new recordings, restored footage and expanded archives, cementing its place as one of the year’s most significant music events.

Frith shared his discovery on social media, writing, “I picked up this tape years ago that said ‘Beatles Demos’ on it. I just figured it was a tape off a bootleg record. After hearing it last night for the first time, it sounds like a master tape. The quality is unreal. How is this even possible to have, what sounds like a Beatles 15-song Decca tapes master?”

The tape, recorded on January 1st, 1962, features a youthful Beatles lineup with Pete Best on drums. The band had auditioned for Decca Records in London, only to be famously rejected. Decca’s decision is often cited as one of the biggest blunders in music history, as The Beatles would go on to sign with Parlophone Records and release ‘Please Please Me‘, launching their legendary career.

In an interview with CBC, Frith described the surreal moment of discovering the tape’s authenticity. “I thought it was just a reel-to-reel tape that somebody had put bootleg things on,” he said. However, after listening closely and consulting with Beatles experts, it became clear the recording was a genuine piece of music history. “It felt like the Beatles were right in the room,” Frith added.

Following the revelation, Frith was connected with Jack Herschorn, the former owner of Vancouver’s Mushroom Records, who originally brought the tape to Canada. Herschorn had obtained it in the 1970s during a trip to London when a producer gifted him the recording. Despite being encouraged to sell copies, he ultimately chose not to.

“I took it back and I thought about it quite a bit,” Herschorn explained to CBC. “I didn’t want to put it out because I didn’t think it was a totally moral thing to do.” Recognizing the Beatles’ immense legacy, he believed they deserved proper credit and royalties for their work. “It deserves to come out properly,” he added.

Frith, too, has no immediate plans to profit from the tape. Instead, he has made a generous offer to Decca Records, giving them the opportunity to release the recording if they choose. Additionally, he extended a personal invitation to Paul McCartney, suggesting the former Beatle visit Neptoon Records in Vancouver to receive the tape in person.

The discovery of this long-lost Beatles recording has reignited fascination with the band’s early days, serving as a powerful reminder of their humble beginnings before they became global icons.

According to Deadline, Sean Ono Lennon, the pair’s son, has overseen the audio remastering of the One to One concert, having fulfilled a similar role on various Lennon remasters in recent years. The benefit concert was played twice, with the afternoon show featuring more songs than the evening show. Among the songs played across both shows are ‘Power to the People’, ‘Instant Karma!’, and ‘Give Peace a Chance’. The remastering of the audio suggests that an accompanying album could be released alongside the documentary, possibly a remaster of ‘Live in New York City’, which was recorded at the concert.

  Magnolia Pictures co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley saw the film as “a revelation,” while director Kevin Macdonald described the documentary as “a movie about music and love and politics and about immersing yourself in the year of 1972—a period in time that feels uncannily like the world we are currently inhabiting.”

The documentary focuses on Lennon and Yoko’s time living in Greenwich Village, which was the happening place on the US’s East Coast. It had become the centre of countercultural movements in the late 60s, and was the birthplace of Beat poetry. The pair were a natural fit for the artist’s haven, and were both involved in protesting through their bed-ins and their own form of  resistance, ‘bagism’.  

Given the period that will be covered, fans should be expecting the documentary to explore Lennon’s relationship with the Nixon administration. His outspoken criticism of the US president and anti-war stance landed him in various deportation meetings, and it was revealed after his death that he had been closely monitored by the FBI, with the files eventually being released to the public.

The trailer, along with the earlier teaser, suggests candid moments between the couple will play a big role. It was the intimate, behind-the-scenes moments that made ‘The Beatles: Get Back’ and ‘Beatles ‘64’ as insightful as they were, and early reviews from the documentary suggest that viewers won’t be let down. 

 The reception to the film from its limited film festival last year was overwhelmingly positive, earning the film a Metacritic score of 82. Reviewing the film for The Guardian, Xan Brooks gave it four out of five stars and said, “If only more nostalgic music documentaries could muster such a fun, fierce, and full-blooded take on old, familiar material. One to One, against the odds, makes Lennon feel somehow vital again.”

The documentary will receive a theatrical run in the UK. It will be released on IMAX on 9 April, before expanding to smaller theatres on 11 April. The full list is available here, along with dates.

With its mix of unseen footage, remastered concert audio, and political intrigue, One to One: John and Yoko will appeal to fans of the ex-Beatle as much as those interested in the social and political history of the early 70s.

Gaga has paid tribute to Lennon multiple times throughout her career. In 2012, Yoko Ono honored her with the LennonOno Grant For Peace. In 2015, she delivered a powerful rendition of ‘Imagine’ at the opening ceremony of the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan.

During the press-conference, Lady Gaga stated: “I think it would have been John Lennon,” she shared. “He had such a beautiful heart, and that’s one of my favourite things in music history, when an artist isn’t just remembered for their songs, but also for their heart.” The artist also reflected on her deep admiration for Lennon by showcasing her peace sign tattoo, which holds personal significance. “This peace sign was always outside 72nd Street by the Dakota, where he was tragically taken from the world,” she explained. “Yoko Ono would leave flowers there every day. I got this tattoo because of that. I never forgot what he stood for, and it’s what I stand for too.”

Her connection to Lennon isn’t new. In a 2011 NME cover story, she compared herself to him, citing their shared struggle with creative satisfaction. “I am perpetually unhappy with what I create,” she admitted. “Even if I say ‘Edge of Glory’ is a pop masterpiece, I’ll always hear things I wish were different.” She recalled Lennon expressing similar frustrations in his 1980 Playboy interview, where he revealed he disliked certain songs despite their widespread acclaim.

That same year, she worked with Lennon’s former Beatles bandmate, Paul McCartney, on a track for ‘High in the Clouds’, an animated film based on McCartney’s 2005 children’s book. She once shared a behind-the-scenes Instagram photo from the studio, featuring McCartney and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready. Recalling how their collaboration came to be, she posted: “Always a good time with my buddy. I’ll never forget when he called me to work together—I hung up the phone because I thought it was a prank!”

Lady Gaga’s highly anticipated seventh studio album, ‘Mayhem’, officially dropped on March 7, marking her first full-length release since 2020’s ‘Chromatica’. It also follows ‘Harlequin’, her companion record for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’.

Praised for its bold sound, ‘Mayhem’ received a four-star review from NME, which described it as an album where Gaga “dials everything up to 11.” The review highlighted how she remains true to her signature maximalist style, resisting contemporary pop trends in favour of crafting longer, immersive tracks.

Introduced by Paul, Ringo walked onstage to a roaring crowd, before the two Beatles performed their old hits “Helter Skelter” and “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. After playing through the two songs, he bid farewell to the audience, saying “I’ve had a great night and I love you all.”

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood also made a guest appearance, joining McCartney for a performance of “Get Back”, with the Beatles bassist playing his original Hofner 500/1 guitar for the first time in over 50 years.

Sir Paul’s tour has treated fans to a packed setlist of nearly 40 songs, including tunes from his first band with John Lennon and George Harrison, The Quarrymen, classics from the many eras of The Beatles, and a few numbers from Wings as well as some solo material.

He gave the O2 crowd members another musical reunion, in an emotional rendition of what’s been branded the Beatles final song, “Now and Then”. With a backing of John’s vocals, he sang and played the piano, harmonizing with the late rock and roll hero.

The soft ballad was created with the help of AI technology, using stem separation to isolate Lennon’s voice and piano from a home recording made in 1977. Both McCartney and Starr have spoken in favour of their use of AI to clean up Lennon’s performance, with the Fab Four drummer saying saying, “The good side is the way we used it,” but sharing concerns about its possibilities for imitation: “Anyone who knows how to use it can steal you. If they just play any five of my songs into the computer, AI gets all of it… They can have me sing anything and it will sound like me.”  

McCartney has recently joined a campaign with other musicians like Kate Bush and Thom Yorke to petition against the unauthorized use of their work to train generative AI systems.

The Liverpudlian legend recently issued a statement ahead of a parliament debate over amending its data bill to let artists exclude their work from AI training data. He warned that AI “could just take over, and we don’t want that to happen, particularly for the young composers and writers, for who it may be the only way they’re gonna make a career.”

The “Got Back” tour itself has been given rave reviews, with The Guardian calling it “extraordinarily sublime and humblingly beautiful”, and Metro hailing it as “three hours of Beatles, Wings and Macca magic”.

Also featured in his lengthy setlist was his holiday hit “Wonderful Christmastime”. A rarity at concerts, McCartney has been performing the seasonal solo tune on his tour alongside a children’s choir and elf-dressed percussionists to set the festive feeling, with fake snow falling during the performance.

Macca has seen Top 40 success recently, with “Wonderful Christmastime” re-entering the charts, as well as other winter anthems, with “Last Christmas” by Wham currently sitting at the number one spot. Released two days ago, the trailer features a clip of the band traveling by train, departing Washington, D.C. In the scene, John Lennon questions whether they need to perform for the cameras. A touching moment follows, as Lennon and George Harrison inspect each other’s suit jackets—identical in design—before swapping them and Harrison humorously shouting, “Cut!”

This trailer, combined with the more personal moments featured in earlier previews, suggests the documentary will offer a closer look at the camaraderie and humour that defined the band during their early years.

The Beatles ‘64’ takes viewers back to the band’s first trip to the United States, where Beatlemania took hold almost overnight. This documentary dives into that transformative period, combining rare archival footage, captured by the late Albert and David Maysles, and new commentary to explore their impact on music, culture, and race relations in a rapidly changing America.

The documentary is directed by David Tedeschi and produced by Martin Scorsese, marking another collaboration between the two . While Scorsese is a producer here, he has previously directed music documentaries on Bob Dylan (‘No Direction Home’) and George Harrison (‘Living in the Material World’), both of which were praised by fans of the artists.

The film premiered in New York City on Sunday (November 24), attended by Tedeschi, Scorsese and Paul McCartney. Fans were shocked to see him in attendance, with the musician recently touring his ‘Got Back’ show around South and Central America. His last date in the Americas was in Mexico City on November 17, and he is set to continue the tour in Europe, with UK dates in Manchester and London.

The Beatles’ debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 catapulted them to fame, drawing over 73 million viewers. Shortly after, they made music history by occupying the top five spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with hits like ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ and ‘She Loves You’.

Paul McCartney shared a lighthearted story about ‘She Loves You’, recalling how his father once suggested swapping the famous “yeah, yeah, yeah” refrain for “yes, yes, yes” to sound less American.This playful anecdote contrasts with the band’s early rebellious image, which made them a sensation among a young audience craving something fresh.

The documentary also highlights The Beatles’ influence on a racially divided America. ‘The Beatles ’64’ promises to deliver an intimate portrait of the band’s most transformative year. The documentary premieres this Friday, November 29 on Disney+.

Set to be released on Disney+ on 29 November, the film showcases present day interviews with surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with other ’60s icons like Smokey Robinson and Ronnie Spector. Scorsese, known for award-winning music documentaries (as well as his celebrated feature film career), produced the film alongside long-time collaborator Tedeschi.

The trailer hints at a blend of humour and nostalgia, with scenes that reveal the toll of the band’s relentless schedule.   Music legend Smokey Robinson comments in the documentary on how the Beatles were “the first white group I heard say, ‘yeah, we grew up listening to Black music,’” while the late Ronnie Spector recalls the Fab Four’s fascination with American culture. “They wanted to know everything about America: The food, the groups, the dancing. They loved it,” she says.

  The Beatles’ 1964 trip to the US marked the dawn of the “British Invasion” and reshaped American pop culture. Arriving to ecstatic crowds and unprecedented media frenzy at Kennedy Airport, their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show drew over 73 million viewers and sparked Beatlemania on a national scale. This US visit helped lay the groundwork for them becoming a global phenomenon.

Originally filmed by documentarians Albert and David Maysles, the documentary’s footage has been restored in 4K, capturing every detail. Audio experts at WingNut Films remixed the soundtrack, with Beatles producer Giles Martin (son of original producer George Martin) adding his touch to enhance their debut US concert and Ed Sullivan Show appearances. 

The release of The Beatles ‘64 comes on the heels of Disney’s success with Get Back in 2021, the Peter Jackson-directed documentary that took audiences behind the scenes of the Beatles’ Let It Be sessions. Disney+ will be aiming to replicate that critical acclaim Get Back achieved by bringing another deep dive into the band’s legacy to their service.

Anybody who has watched some of Scorsese’s more recent music documentaries, such as George Harrison: Living in the Material World and Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story, will be eagerly waiting to see how he approaches a project with four equally charismatic stars, even if he is just serving as a producer. Along with Scorsese, the documentary is also being produced by McCartney, Starr, Olivia Harrison (George Harrison’s widow), and Sean Ono Lennon.

For fans of the Fab Four, the promise of unseen moments between John Lennon, George Harrison, and their bandmates offers a unique look back at the cultural phenomenon that was Beatlemania. With Scorsese’s Midas touch, the film hopes to appeal to both long-time fans and new generations alike.

In a statement released to the press, Starr’s representative confirmed the news, urging fans to seek refunds at their point of purchase. “As always, Ringo and the All Starrs send peace and love to their fans and hope to see them soon,” the statement concluded. The tour, which kicked off on September 7 in San Diego, saw Starr and his band perform ten shows before the illness struck. Just days before the cancellation, Starr had shared highlights from the tour on social media, thanking fans for their support and expressing his love for the audiences. Despite this setback, Starr remains active in the music scene. In October 2023, he released a four-track EP titled Rewind Forward. The project, which reflects on the theme of moving forward despite life’s challenges, was well-received by fans and critics alike. “It’s all about going forward. It’s just the fact that sometimes we all get stuck and have to fight your way out,” Starr explained in an interview with Billboard.

Earlier this year, Starr collaborated with The Strokes’ guitarist Nick Valensi on another EP, Crooked Boy. Initially released on exclusive vinyl for Record Store Day, the EP later became available on streaming platforms. Co-written with Linda Perry, the EP features tracks like “Gonna Need Someone,” which Starr described as a rocker he specifically requested from Perry. “I love what Linda did and I think all the songs are great, but one thing I did ask her was to write me a rocker,” Starr said to NME. “Nick Valensi plays guitars on it — and on all of the EP — and he is great.”

Looking ahead, Starr is also working on a full country project with renowned producer T Bone Burnett. Over the summer, he shared his excitement about the project, particularly praising a song Burnett wrote for him. “It’s absolutely one of the most beautiful country songs I ever heard. So, I thought, ‘I’m going to do a country EP’,” Starr revealed.

In addition to his musical endeavours, Starr recently gave his approval to the newly restored Let It Be documentary, despite his earlier reservations about the film’s portrayal of The Beatles’ final days.

The Manchester shows will mark the the first time since 2011 that McCartney has played in the city when he performed at the Manchester Evening News Arena for the 18th show of his “On The Run” Tour. This tour will also mark first time he has played in London in 6 years and his first UK tour since 2018.

McCartneys “Got Back” tour has been circulating since 2022 and first landed in the UK when he brought it to the Glastonbury of that year where he headlined alongside Kendrick Lamar and Billie Eilish and marked the singers second time taking to the Pyramid stage as he previously performed in 2004.

He is set to perform a whole host of crowd raisers throughout the show from his 60 year career including Beatles classics like “Hey Jude”, “Let It Be”, “Band on the Run”, “Get Back” “Live and Let Die” and “Lady Madonna”. It will be an exciting set of shows for fans of the Beatles as McCartney has been continuously revamping his equipment and technology to be able to use stems from old tracks, essentially “duetting” with his former band mates. Not only this, but the show holds glowing reviews from critics when it first Debuted at Worthing farm two years ago, with the Telegraph calling it ‘one of the most thrilling, uplifting, banger-filled, star-studded sets this 50-plus-year-old festival had ever seen’.

According to TimeOut magazine, Paul McCartney spoke about the upcoming shows during the announcement saying On announcing his UK string of shows, Paul said: ‘I’m excited to be ending my year and 2024 tour dates in the UK. It’s always such a special feeling to play shows on our home soil. It’s going to be an amazing end to the year. Let’s get set to party. I can’t wait to see you.’ The beloved Beatles member also celebrated his 82nd birthday this week.

The Beatles icon has already has already taken it to cities across the US, Australia and South America but finally the show will return to the UK for more than just one night only with shows at Co-op Live on Saturday December 14 and Sunday December 15 and then shoes at the O2 Arena in London on Wednesday December 18 and Thursday December 19. Some fans have however been left disappointed as there are currently no dates for Scotland or McCartney’s home city – Liverpool.

The auction house provides a detailed description of the equipment on the lot’s page. “Recording industry giant E.M.I. Corporation did so many things extremely well back in their heyday, including manufacturing their own professional recording equipment, namely the BTR (British Tape Recorder), a ¼” tape, twin-track valve (vacuum based) machine. In 1953 they started building the ‘BTR2′ tape recording console and at the time, these were considered state-of-the-art mono recorders – the best that money could buy.”

The lot’s orientation continues, “They were extremely well built, using high-quality components and expert craftsmanship, and they weighed almost 600 pounds apiece. Originally made for ‘in-house’ use only – they were very highly regarded due to the fact that they were fabulous recording machines with great sound quality, were extremely dependable and relatively easy to operate – and as such there was a high demand for them outside of E.M.I. Orders were placed by The British Broadcasting Corporation (B.B.C.), who ultimately purchased and used many BTR2s throughout Great Britain..”

The recording consoles’ heydays were from 1957 until the 1980s, they were installed and used prior to and during the studio’s rename and rebranding. In 1970 the then named E.M.I Studios was renamed as Abbey Road Studios and acts continued to flock to the then state-of-the-art workplace. The BTR2s used by Abbey Road have always stood out, the studio mainly used machines which were painted grey.

Recording equipment from Abbey Road Studios is very rare to find and is rarely found for sale let alone on auction. Only a couple of items from the studios have been sold, the pieces were quickly snapped up by collectors and private buyers. This particular BTR2 console has changed hands prior, it originally was sold by Abbey Road Studios in 1980 within their Sale Of The Century. In 1988 the console was again sold to the Hard Rock Café which in turn sold it again to its current owner, the same owner who is now selling it.

These consoles are responsible for a long list of legendary albums, one particular group which regarded the console as family were The Beatles. The equipment has become a major part of the band’s history, a vast amount of the band’s discography was produced and recording using the BTR2 including such albums as A Hard Day’s Night, Beatles For Sale, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album and of course Abbey Road. The group’s eleventh studio home sired many of the band’s most loved hits including “Come Together” and “Here Comes The Sun“.

The Beatles and BTR2s are heavily integrated with each other, included within the auction are two photographs of the “Get Back” band with the equipment, one of John Lennon with the BTR2 and another of Ringo Starr and George Harrison with cake and champagne with the auction item. Also included within the auction is a letter penned by The Abbey Road Chief Engineer, the original instruction booklet that was used by the studios and a certificate  of authenticity from Gotta Have Rock & Roll.

The lot’s description further explains its importance to the fab four’s career, “These BTR2 recording consoles are of great importance related to the recording history of The Beatles. Very little exists in any collection, public or private, with regard to Abbey Road / Beatles used recording equipment in any form and the rarity and significance of these BTR2s cannot be overstated.”

These important artifacts of modern music are also responsible for six of Pink Floyd’s albums, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Sauceful Of Secrets, More, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother, Meddle and their seminal 1973 release The Dark Side Of The Moon. Other acts who utilised the renowned consoles include some of popular music’s most sought after artists, Cliff Richard And The Shadows, Jeff Beck, Connie Francis, Deep Purple and The Pretty Things.
