It will be one of the Beach Boys’ first shows since the death of frontman Brian Wilson earlier this summer. The 82 year old was reported to have died due to “respiratory arrest”, with some contributing factors such as sepsis and cystitis being listed.

The concert will see the band being fronted by co-founder and lyricist Mike Love, and he will be joined on stage by member Bruce Johnston, musical director Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Jon Bolton, Tim Bonhomme, Keith Hubacher, John Wedemeyer, and Randy Leago.

The Beach Boys are the second artist to be confirmed for the Live At Chelsea concert series next year, following the announcement of The Proclaimers, who will be headlining on June 13. More artists are set to be announced soon.

When news of Brian Wilson’s death was shared, Mike Love shared a statement that said,”Our journey together was filled with moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE. Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio.”

The other members of The Beach Boys paid their respects in a joint message, saying he “was the soul of our sound.”

Tributes poured in from across the music world. Bob Dylan said, “Heard the sad news about Brian today and thought about all the years I’ve been listening to him and admiring his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian.” Carole King called him her “friend and brother in songwriting,” adding, “We are so lucky to have his music.” Sir Elton John said Wilson was the “biggest influence” on his songwriting, while John Cale of The Velvet Underground said he was a “true musical genius.” Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood also added that, “The world is in mourning.”

Tickets for the show go on pre-sale November 26, and general sale on November 28 at 10am. A percentage of proceeds from the concerts will support the care of the Chelsea Pensioners, and tickets can be found here.

In an inspired twist, Bristol duo Getdown Services, comprised of childhood friends Josh Law and Ben Sadler, have teamed up with Mumble Tide to release a fresh take on the Beach Boys’ classic ‘Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)’.

Speaking to The Line Of Best Fit, Josh Law commented: “I think Brian Wilson is a bit like the north star for depressed musicians who spend too much time in their own heads…His music has made me feel as many things as you could hope to feel from music. Cheers Brian!” And also went on to say “He made me realise there are more ways that music can hit you than loud guitar solos. If I hadn’t got into the beach boys I don’t think I’d have the same level of conviction to just follow my nose and trust my gut when making music.”

Mumble Tide’s Ryan Rogers echoed this sentiment, adding that Wilson’s artistry: “defied convention whilst simultaneously adoring pop sensibilities…endlessly pushing to create work that defied convention.”

Since emerging during the isolation of lockdown, Getdown Services have rapidly become one of the UK’s most talked about acts. Their sound blends dance-punk, disco, and biting satire—think Sleaford Mods meets LCD Soundsystem.

Their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Crisps’ was filled with explosive wit, taking jabs at landlords, Jamie Oliver, and the mundanity of suburban life, all accompanied by playful energetic grooves. They followed up with EPs like ‘Crumbs’, ‘Your Medal’s in the Post’, and most recently, ‘Primordial Slot Machine’.

In the summer of 2020, Brian Wilson was initially slated to take on symphony halls all along the UK on the “Good Vibrations Greatest Hits Tour” with Beach Boys co-founder Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin, who was temporarily a guitarist with the group in the 70’s. But, like every single other touring artist in the world around the time, the tour was postponed. The rescheduled gigs were set to take place in the summer of 2022. Today, however, the European tour dates have seemingly been replaced by a co-headline tour with Chicago, exclusively in the US. No information has been released to the updated European dates as of yet.

In a statement released by the band, Wilson states, “We are SO sad that we have to once again push our tour due to the constantly changing and challenging issues overseas surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic. Me and the guys were looking forward to seeing everyone, eating great food and performing.”, continuing, “But with routing impossible and needing to keep our touring group safe we need to postpone. Such a bummer. I miss Europe I MISS London and all of the UK…. My second home. Send good vibes that we will be out of this soon. Stay safe everyone.”. See the full dates for the US tour and Wilson’s message here.

Wilson’s inability to tour over the last few years has not left him bored however, last month we were introduced to a new documentary called “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road”. The feature-length documentary sees the likes of Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, and even Nick Jonas offer their takes on the sprawling career of the famed Beach Boys frontman. The same day, Wilson shared his 11th solo outing At My Piano. The LP is essentially an acoustic album, taking Beach Boys classics like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “In My Room”, and “God Only Knows” and performing them solo on the piano. Concerning Wilson’s love of the instrument, he said in a press release speaking of the project, “I can’t express how much the piano has played such an important part in my life. It has bought me comfort, joy and security. It has fuelled my creativity as well as my competitive nature.”. See below the stripped back version of the definitive Beach Boys track “Good Vibrations” below.

Deezer have shared InVersions, an exclusive covers album full of completely iconic hits by some of the hottest new artists in the world. In a bid to invest a little energy into the new music scene, during this difficult moment, Deezer contacted a string of exciting and diverse new artists and asked them to put their take on any classic track they fancied. Everything was recorded in isolation and the result, InVersions, dropped today (October 6), exclusive to Deezer.

Among the line-up are Fontaines D.C., with a slow, melancholic cover of The Beach Boys’ ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’. The Beach Boys sometimes have that effect where in completely the right mood they’re perfect – otherwise they’re kind of sickening. Not this cover. The last four lines, which tend to just fade into outro in the original, are haunting. You can catch a clip of it here:

This is what they had to say about it: “Covering a Beach Boys song has always been a scary thing considering the genius arrangements, their playing, their harmonies, everything about it … So ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice’ we saw this kind of naive perspective towards love and marriage in the lyrics, and we were quite curious to see what would happen when you contrasted that approach with a darker musical palette. So we kind of slowed down the tempo and created a draggier tune for those lyrics to sit on top of.”

A cover is an art form, there’s no doubt about that, and it’s always struck me as a great way to really get to know a band. What Fontaines D.C. say above, for example, shows just how much they understand their industry, and their craft. Perhaps Deezer picked the line-up for InVersions for exactly this reason.

InVersions also presents Arlo Parks’ first song in French: ‘Ta Reine’ by Angèle. Parks explains why this is so special: “I picked ‘Ta Reine’ by Angèle because I find her voice completely mesmerising and soft, and I feel like the topic the song discusses is very important. I’ve always wanted to sing in French since my mum is French and I’m generally just enthralled by this song and her delivery. I hope I can do it justice.”

Really there is nothing to distinguish one moment from another – all of these covers are spectacular. For me, other honourable mentions go towards Alfie Templeman’s ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’, which retains the feel of the original while simultaneously softening everything. It perfectly suits the style that Templeman is really making his own.

Likewise, Orla Gartland’s ‘Nothing Compares to You’ is ambitious – intriguingly, her powerful voice seems to be set against a Radiohead-inspired, subtly electronic take on the melody. When the music falls away for the final refrain, Gartland shows nothing but pure talent.

But, for me, Dream Wife’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ steals the show. It has all the chills of the first time you heard it. It absolutely puts a spotlight on why we all unexpectedly fell in love with Robyn in 2010. This is not because it’s a carbon copy, though; Dream Wife retain all of the best of Robyn’s original, while giving it a spin of their own. If you listen closely, you catch an endearing whisper of “in a galaxy far far far away” just before the bridge.

InVersions could not be more exciting as a music project, but it also feels like a positive force in these bleak times for the music industry. Nigel Harding, who is Deezer’s VP of Global Artist Marketing, explained the thinking behind InVersions. “We all know the music community has been hit hard by the pandemic, especially Indie artists who rely on live gigs. During this tough time, we wanted to do our part and offer support to Indie and Alternative artists with our new Inversions album … I’d love for music fans from all over the world to discover some new favourites on our InVersions album.”
