In an official announcement released this week, the BBC confirmed that Mills is no longer part of its Radio 2 presenting team. The corporation did not provide further details, stating only that the matter concerned “personal conduct”. No public statement has been issued by Mills himself or his representatives.

After taking over his BBC Radio 2 show from Zoe Ball back in January 2025, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, Mills ended the programme at 9:30 am, originally stating he’d return the following day. The following morning, however, DJ Gary Davies hosted Mills’ usual show, stating that he was “in for Scott Mills“.

This news was first reported by The Mirror, which stated the belief it was to do with “a historic relationship“.

Mills joined BBC Radio 2 in 2022, taking over the weekday afternoon show previously hosted by Steve Wright. His move followed more than two decades with BBC Radio 1, where he became one of the station’s most recognisable presenters. Known for his upbeat delivery and long-standing collaboration with producer and co-host Chris Stark, Mills played a central role in shaping the tone of mainstream BBC radio entertainment throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Before joining the BBC, Mills began his career in local radio and quickly built a national profile. Over the years, he also appeared on television projects linked to BBC radio, including coverage of live music events and charity broadcasts.

Radio industry observers have described Mills’ departure as one of the most significant changes to Radio 2’s schedule in recent years. The station is expected to fill the weekday afternoon slot with temporary cover until a permanent replacement is confirmed.

No internal details have been made public regarding the review or timeline of events leading up to the dismissal. The BBC has not elaborated on the nature or specifics of the conduct involved, stating that it does not comment on individual staffing matters.

Listeners have widely discussed the announcement on social media, reflecting on Mills’ contribution to BBC radio and his role in defining daytime programming over the past two decades. Many noted his distinctive broadcasting style and the long-running rapport he built with audiences during his time at both Radio 1 and Radio 2.

Mills’ departure brings an end to a 25-year career within the BBC, marking a major shift for the Radio 2 schedule.

The britpop legends will record two special sets at the BBC Radio Theatre in London, with the shows being broadcast in full – along with interviews with the band – on Thursday May 29.

‘6 Music Session: Pulp Live’ will be an intimate performance available to listen to on Nick Grimshaw’s 6 Music show (7-10am) on May 29, with ‘Radio 2 In Concert’ being performed in front of a small live audience and available that same evening on Jo Whiley’s Radio 2 show (7-9pm).

The announcement of these special concerts comes off the back of the band sharing details of their upcoming album ‘More’, which will be the Sheffield rockers first new album since 2001’s ‘We Love Life’.

Jarvis Cocker and co’s first album in 24 years will hit the shelves on Friday June 6, as they gave fans a sneak peak into their new sound with the release of the records first single, ‘Spike Island’, last week. The ‘festival-ready’ single is a synth-led indie pop tune that gives a nod to the iconic 1990 Stone Roses gig of the same name. This will be the first music the band will release since the tragic passing of their bassist Steve Mackey in 2023, with the record being dedicated to his memory.

Speaking of his excitement for the upcoming gigs, Pulp lead man Jarvis Cocker said: “We are really looking forward to this. From my time at 6 Music, I remember that the BBC Radio Theatre is a very intimate venue. As long as we can fit all our equipment in there it’s going to be great to play some songs for Radio 2 and 6 Music.”

This excitement is shared by Nick Grimshaw, who’s 6 Music show will broadcast one of the performances, with Grimshaw saying: “I’m so excited to hear more from their new album as part of their 6 Music session and to speak to the band about the process of writing and recording their first album in almost 24 years.”

Tickets will be available for the ‘Radio 2 In Concert’ show via a random draw. The performance will take place at the BBC Radio Theatre on May 7 and the ballot is available to sign up to now, running until Tuesday April 22. Head to www.bbc.co.uk/inconcert to apply now.

As well as the two special shows next month, Pulp will be touring all over UK and Europe this summer, including a homecoming gig at Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival in July.

The buzz continues to grow around the return of the ‘Common People’, with summer 2025 shaping up to be a very exciting time for fans of britpop.

Joseph recalled he had suffered from a continuous headache over the last month but put off going to see a doctor. On December 21, the 54-year-old DJ went to Bedford Hospital’s A&E before a CT Scan required specialist treatment at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. Referring to the treatment as a “specialist operation”, Spoony highlighted the headaches were caused be a subdural hematoma, a condition which causes a bleed on the brain.

The social media post which sees a carousel of Spoony’s Christmas in hospital, depicts the DJ in somewhat high spirits despite the circumstances. Part of the post’s accompanying caption reads: “What was crazy was the headache had instantly gone. 4 weeks of this throb and finally peace up top.”

He continued: “I woke up on Christmas morning in hospital. I was so grateful. Had something special to look forward to. Going home to my family and friends. All who had been incredible for the last few days. The visits, support, calls, messages. Very humbling”.

As a prominent DJ with roots in the UK’s garage and r&b scene from the 1990s to present, Spoony was awarded a British Empire Medal in 2022 for his services to charity through music during the COVID Pandemic, the national lockdown allowed the DJ to host regular livestreams from home to connect people whilst raising money for charity.

Spoony also hosts his own show on BBC Radio 2 titled ‘The Good Groove’.  Commencing in 2022 with a weekly edition every Friday night from 9-11pm, this January will see ‘The Good Grove’ expand to 4 nights a week, on Monday-Thursday nights from 10pm – midnight.

The DJ has since shown immense gratitude to the NHS since his return from hospital, writing: “Thank you to Bedford Hospital for the scan and Addenbrookes for completing the task. You really are the best in the business. All the nurse, doctors , health assistants that looked after me. Thank you to the NHS. Thank you, Richard Hughes, Michael Edwards, Arne Slot and Mo Salah”.

Concluding: “Radio today at 2pm, joining?” It seems DJ Spoony is taking recovery in his stride following his recent surgery, being back to business as usual by providing the groove to Radio 2 Listeners.

The broadcast offered more than a simple playlist. Kay guided listeners through a journey of Elvis’s storied career—from his earliest hits to his Hollywood ventures. Alongside the top 40 countdown, lesser-known tracks like “Stuck On You,” “The Fool,” and “Good Luck Charm” received attention in a companion programme on BBC Sounds, titled Your Ultimate Elvis Song – The Extras.  

The countdown reflected Elvis’s diverse catalogue, highlighting his evolution as an artist. Starting off at No. 40 was ‘Promised Land’, a high-energy Chuck Berry cover, while ‘Suspicious Minds’, his late-career classic, claimed the top spot. The placement of songs like ‘An American Trilogy’ (No. 7), a medley of 19th-century hymns, and ‘If I Can Dream’ (No. 3), written in response to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., showed a connection between his emotive songs and the British public.

Voters connected with ‘In the Ghetto’ (No. 2), a poignant story of poverty and its cyclical nature, and ‘Always on My Mind’ (No. 4), recorded in the wake of his separation from Priscilla Presley. Meanwhile, classics like ‘Hound Dog’ (No. 15) and ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ (No. 5) continue to rank highly in the most iconic Elvis tracks.  

The countdown wasn’t just about the music; it explored Elvis’s cultural impact. Vernon Kay shared personal fan stories during the programme. Sarah King recounted her father singing ‘Moody Blue’ (No. 35) to her as a child, changing the lyrics to “moody smoo” and leaving her with a lasting nickname. 

A clip of Cliff Richard also appeared, with the singer discussing the track ‘Blue Christmas’ (No. 28) and saying “No Elvis, no Cliff Richard. He gave an identity to rock and roll that is still with us”.  

The countdown demonstrated how Elvis continues to resonate, as well as how our relationship with his music is constantly evolving. Several songs climbed or fell in rank compared to ITV’s 2013 poll of the UK’s favourite Elvis tracks. Junkie XL’s remix of ‘A Little Less Conversation’ dropped from No. 5 to No. 12, while ‘An American Trilogy’ soared from No. 15 to No. 7.

Tributes have poured in from across the music and broadcasting worlds, with his wife Tiggy posting a poignant message on Twitter: “What does a new widow do on NYE? She listens to BBC Radio 2, opens a bottle and toasts her amazing husband. Courageous, wise, strong, creative and never dull. They didn’t call him the Pirate for nothing. Walker’s career began in the golden age of pirate radio. Starting with Swinging England, he became a household name on Radio Caroline. Defying the UK government’s Marine Broadcasting Offences Act in 1967, which outlawed pirate stations, Walker continued broadcasting from international waters before joining the BBC in 1969. At Radio 1, his eclectic taste and refusal to stick to playlists earned him a devoted following, though it also led to disputes with the station’s management. These disagreements prompted a move to America in 1976, where he spent five years broadcasting in California and Maryland.  

Returning to the UK in the early 1980s, Walker worked for various local radio stations before making a triumphant return to the BBC in 1987. His tenure at Radio 2’s Sounds of the 70s programme, which he took over in 2008, solidified his legacy. Over 15 years, Walker transformed the show into a celebration of the era’s music and culture, winning over new generations of listeners. He introduced the ‘Johnnie’s Jukebox’ feature, where Johnnie and listeners would select a single from the 70s to be stored in the imaginary jukebox.

His final broadcast on 27 October 2024 was an emotional farewell. “[It’s] going to be very strange not to be on the wireless anymore. Also, by the same token, life will be slightly less of a strain really, trying to find the breath in order to do the programmes. Thank you for being with me all these years and take good care of yourself and those you love. May we walk into the future with our heads held high and happiness in our hearts. God bless you.”

The announcement of Walker’s passing was made by his successor, Bob Harris, who paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend of over 50 years. “Johnnie was one of the greats, a voice that defined an era and a man who lived and breathed music,” Harris said. Social media has been awash with tributes from fans, coworkers and musicians, with one listener commenting, “He had one of the best voices on radio, and excellent taste in music too. Sleep well, Johnnie, you will be missed.”

Walker’s influence extended beyond his radio shows. In a 2013 interview with Tony Benn, he reflected on the transformative role of pirate radio: “This was one of the greatest musical explosions in history, and the BBC decided to play only an hour on Saturday morning. But teenagers were desperate to hear it, and, three and a half miles off the Essex coast, pirate radios were doing that. And people loved them.” Walker’s defiance of the establishment and passion for sharing music left an indelible mark on British culture.

Diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Walker spent his final months at home with Tiggy, his wife and carer, who had supported him tirelessly. Known for his warmth, Walker was a pioneer whose voice will echo through the history of British broadcasting.

As Tiggy poignantly wrote, “They didn’t call him the Pirate for nothing.” Johnnie Walker’s legacy as a champion of music and a beloved broadcaster will endure. Raise a glass to the man who brought the spirit of the airwaves to life.

For an act to qualify, a British group was defined as an “act containing two or more members that is made-up wholly of, or where the majority are, people who were or, live or hold British citizenship”. With that being said, the shortlisted groups span multiple decades, 1960s-2010s, and diverse genres. The selection process was compiled from the top timeless tracks played on Radio 2 throughout the years and the most Successful British Groups on the Official Albums Chart.

The top 20 groups were announced on October 11 by Mark Goodier and recorded for the release of a special episode broadcast on Radio 2 on October 19 at 1-3pm.

The results to the poll are almost unsurprising given the amount of legacy acts from the UK. As votes came in in their thousands, Radio 2 fans crowned The Beatles as their ‘Ultimate British Group’.

The second spot was earned by Queen, the third by The Rolling Stones, the fourth by Pink Floyd and the fifth by Fleetwood Mac. It is apparent Radio 2 listeners are partial to their mid-twentieth century classic-rock.

The Liverpudlian four-piece topped the poll ahead of many iconic bands from the UK, but this is no surprise given their continued legacy in the twenty-first century. Formed in 1960 comprised of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon, The Beatles remain one of the best-selling music acts of all time, along with one of the most successful and influential groups.

Remembered for their legendary hits, ‘Here Comes The Sun’, ‘Let It Be’, ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Yesterday’, to name a few, The Beatles became a household name across the world for their success’ influence in the transformation of fan culture, with Beatlemania in 1960s America, along with their punchy socially-conscious tunes which dominated the charts.

The Beatles have 16 UK Number 1 albums, more than any other UK act, and 18 UK Number 1 singles. Their legacy is ever-present to Radio 2 listeners and music enjoyers, not only does Paul McCartney still perform Beatles hits during his latest ‘Got Back’ tour, but their last single ‘Now and Then’, released in November 2023, climbed to Number 1 on the UK Official Single Chart within a week of its release. Its release set a new record for The Beatles, with the longest time span between an artist’s first and last Number 1, ‘Now and Then’ gained its Number 1 spot on the Official Chart 60 years and 6 months after The Beatles’ first Number 1 track, ‘From Me To You’ in May 1963.

The Radio 2 poll highlights the amount of eclectic acts which continue to remain prominent to music culture in the UK. The top 20 featured other notable acts including Oasis, Take That, The Cure and The Jam.

The gig was announced alongside the British rock band’s resurgence into the industry for their first album in 16 years, Songs of a Lost World, which is set to be released on November 1.

Despite the prominent 1980s band being familiar with selling out arenas, the performance at  Radio 2 for the BBC will feature a very small audience in an intimate setting, where tickets will be allocated via ballot, were registration closes October 9 at 9pm UK time.

During the ballot, fans can apply for a pair of tickets, which if they are chosen from the randomly selected ballot, they will be notified by text message with tickets being emailed over.

The Cure’s performance for Radio 2 In Concert will take place at the BBC Radio Theatre on October 30. The concert will be officially broadcast during Jo Whiley’s show on Radio 2 and BBC Sounds on October 31, between 7 and 9pm. This broadcast will also feature Whiley’s exclusive interview with The Cure frontman Robert Smith.

Both sets from the ‘Boys Don’t Cry’ band will be recorded at the BBC Radio Theatre in London’s Broadcasting House. It is evident the band will perform their greatest and most-loved hits, along with new songs from their unreleased album, Songs of a Lost World.

The Cure’s set for 6 Music will be available on both 6 Music and BBC Sounds. It will feature The Cure’s intimate session, ‘6 Music Session: The Cure Live’ along with an exclusive interview between Huw Stephens and Robert Smith. This interview will be broadcast during Huw Stephens’ show on October 31 (4-7pm).

6 Music have been fundamental to The Cure’s return, having debuted the world exclusive first listen to the first single of Songs of a Lost World, ‘Alone’. The track was played on September 26 during Anne Hobbs’ show.

When speaking to the BBC about the upcoming free gigs, Robert Smith stated: “It’s not often we perform such intimate shows, so we’re really looking forward to this, and to sharing more tracks from the new album for the first time on 6 Music and Radio 2”.

Fans can expect more from The Cure and BBC crossover given, the Radio 2 Breakfast Show hosted by Zoe Ball on November 1 will feature some exclusive tracks recorded from the gig. Along with this, The Cure’s Radio 2 In Concert and 6 Music performances will be available on BBC iPlayer from October 31.

Additionally,  November 2 will see the BBC will air The Cure’s Radio 2 performance alongside a new and exclusive The Cure at the BBC compilation along with That Was Then: This Is Now: The Cure, The Cure at Glastonbury 2019 and Rock Around the Clock: The Cure.

With the The Cure studded lineup set to take over the BBC at the end of the month, the anticipation of fans is high as the band make their musical comeback after 16 years.

The three day festival, ‘Radio 2 in the park’, has been taking place since 2011, and each year creates quite a stir, with huge acts taking to the stage each year. Until 2023, it was held in London’s Hyde Park, however now takes place in a different location each year as part of the BBC’s Across the UK plan, with last year’s show taking place in Victoria Park in Leicester.

Recently, Zoe Ball announced the exciting weekend’s initial lineup on her show. So far, the organisers are catering for all audiences, with the main stage on the Saturday being graced by a performance of the iconic Sting, alongside performances from nostalgic artists such as: Sugababes, Snow Patrol, Kim Wilde, Travis, and Craig David.  The Sunday does not disappoint either, with Manic Street Preachers, Sister Sledge and Paul Heaton stirring up audiences. The performance from Sting on the Saturday is set to be like no other, as he takes his new dynamic trio to the stage to perform his own songs, alongside Police classics.

The people of Preston are also clearly excited for this event, with Chief Executive at Preston City Council, Adrian Phillips, telling the BBC, “We’re looking forward to welcoming thousands of people to Radio 2 in the Park, as well as our favourite presenters, who we love to listen to day in, day out. It promises to be the biggest live event Lancashire has seen in many years, and everyone can’t wait to enjoy what promises to be a fantastic weekend of live music in the city.”

Tickets will go on sale at 8:15am 4th June, with each festival day ticket sold separately, priced at £59, excluding ticket fees. Tickets for Radio 2’s pre-party, are priced at £30, also excluding ticket fees. All tickets can be accessed here.

The tour promoting The Very Best Of 1989-2023 will be a six-date UK arena tour in September 2024. The band will begin the tour in Leeds at First Direct Arena, and end with a show in Texas‘ hometown of Glasgow, at the OVO Hydro.

The rock band fronted by Sharleen Spiteri gave an electric performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival, where they performed classic hits from their discography, as well as newer songs from their latest studio album, 2021’s Hi. Leader of the Leeds City Council, Councillor James Lewis has given a statement concerning the event’s new home, “It’s hugely exciting to see such a star-studded line-up of world-class artists being announced and we can’t wait to see them in Leeds for what will be an incredible occasion for music lovers and for the city as a whole. The impressive line-up announced by veteran DJ Zoe Ball reads like a who’s who of popular music, set to take the stage on Sunday are Melanie C and Mark Owen. Joining the Spice Girl and former Take That band member are George Ezra, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Emeli Sandé, Olly Murs and M People frontwoman Heather Small. Further legendary British artists are set to perform on Saturday, scheduled to perform on the event’s first day are Simple Minds, Tears For Fears, iconic girl group Bananarama, Ella Henderson, “Ruby” hitmakers Kaiser Chiefs, Craig David and Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Concerning the upcoming event, Head of Music for Radio 2 Jeff Smith has given the following statement, “We’re so pleased to be announcing the stellar artist lineup for Radio 2 Live, as our annual event spreads its wings for the first time across the UK. This year we will be in Leeds with two days of incredible music from an amazing lineup of musicians. Having been without it for so long we all really appreciate how important live music is to all our lives and so we invite everyone to join us for Radio 2 Live in Leeds at Temple Newsam Park or to listen or watch our weekend via BBC Sounds or iPlayer.”

The annual event will be returning to a traditional live format this year after the COVID-19 pandemic forced previous years to be reconfigured to meet the then-established guidelines. In 2020 and 2021 the event was renamed BBC Radio 2 Live at Home and consisted of concerts held in Cardiff, Manchester, Belfast and Glasgow. Further details concerning the lineup are yet to be announced, BBC radio 2 have established that two more acts for both dates will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

For those unable to attend, the event will be broadcasted live across the BBC’s network stations. The live music extravaganza will also be made available to watch on-demand via BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer. Music fans will also be able to catch the festival’s highlights on 24th September 2022 via BBC Two. Tickets will be available to purchase from Thursday 16th June 2022 at 8 am via this link.
