Charli XCX has taken centre stage recently, whether for her disparaging comments on the lack of female nominees for the Brits’ Artist of the Year category, or for her new collaborative remix with Caroline Polachek that’s taking TikTok by storm.

— Mark Savage (@mrdiscopop) February 12, 2023

Charli has now made waves with her decision to part with Atlantic Records, whom she signed a five album deal with at just 16 years old. The details of her new record deal have not yet been revealed, but Charli did tease fans with a glimpse of her “brand new recording contract” in her ‘In the Bag’ video for British Vogue.

Charli reveals that she has signed a two album deal, stating in the video “We’re in business!” Rumours subsequently began to circulate that she had signed with Dirty Hit, an independent label home to No Rome, Pale Waves and Charli’s boyfriend George Daniel’s band, The 1975.

Charli has previously worked with numerous artists signed with Dirty Hit, most recently teaming up with George Daniel to remix Caroline Polachek’s new single, ‘Welcome To My Island’, so it wasn’t surprising that fans thought she may have signed with Dirty Hit herself.

However, she quickly put these rumours to rest, replying to a fan on Twitter saying “i’m too expensive for them.”

Speaking to NME in October 2022, Charli revealed that she wasn’t sure about becoming an independent artist, saying, “I like not having to foot the bill for everything at the beginning, that’s quite scary. Especially when you want to do things on the kind of scale that I did on the last record. I’m still exploring, definitely.”

She concluded that, “there’s so many interesting options that would work for me.”

Charli’s latest album CRASH released in March 2022 debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming her first album to top the chart. CRASH also became her highest charting album in the US to date, debuting at No.7 on the Billboard 200.

Following this success, Charli expressed her confusion surrounding the lack of recognition for female artists at the Brits, tweeting “i only came to speak the truth hunny.’

i only came to speak the truth hunny: https://t.co/vJj5hYrPYS — Charli (@charli_xcx) February 12, 2023

Despite her lack of nomination for Best Artist, Charli was later seen wearing a very on-brand tongue in cheek outfit, with a slogan t-shirt reading ‘REAL WINNER.’

Fans are eagerly awaiting news on Charli’s plans for 2023, with hints at further collaborations and even a potential book being on the horizon.

The 32-year-old singer parted ways from her previous label Atlantic Records to join Jay-Z’s record label. Glynne has reported having made the move in aid of her mission to crack America and obtain chart success across the pond.

An industry insider has given the following information concerning the singer’s recent career move, “There is no doubt that Jess is a force to be reckoned with in British music. Her songs have been wildly successful. But there hasn’t been a massive pick-up outside Europe. Now she feels like it is the time to branch out.”

In January a source from The Sun reported that Glynne had split from Atlantic Records due to a disagreement concerning her sound and future releases, amidst the issues the singer also disbanded from her management team. Glynne’s label change then made her available to team up with Jay-Z’s hugely successful firm, the newspaper’s source also reported that the singer attended meetings in Los Angeles to discuss her musical future with Roc Nation.

The source continued to discuss the news, “She wanted to change up her sound and people should expect something different from her when she returns. But given her obvious talents when it comes to singing and songwriting, Roc Nation is confident there are even bigger and better things on the horizon for Jess.”

Glynne first rose to fame after signing with Atlantic Records in 2014 when her tremendous talent was heard as a featured artist on the Clean Bandit single “Rather Be”. The single was released on 17th January 2014 and reached number one within the UK singles charts; the track also won Best Dance Recording at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

The singer has also achieved great acclaim as a solo artist, with Glynne having released two studio albums. Her debut album, I Cry When I Laugh, was released on 21st August 2015 and became a worldwide success. The album peaked at number one within the UK albums charts and sired six singles, including two songs that reached number one. The first hit single, “Hold My Hand” was released on 20th March 2015 and was featured on the soundtrack for Bridget Jones’ Baby. The second number one single, “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself”, was released on 14th August 2015 and was the fourth track to be released from the album.

Rumours concerning the London born songstress’ new material has been circulating since the news of her label move was reported. The singer’s move to Roc Nation will surely benefit Glynne’s sound, as the conglomerate offers multiple services including media relations, touring support, merchandising opportunities and publishing. Founded in 2008 by Jay Z, the record label is home to a roster of music’s most influential and popular artists including Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Megan Thee Stallion and Rhianna.

Ora’s long-term manager, Sarah Stennett has spoken on the singer’s new career chapter, “Rita has always been an artist and creator of ‘Firsts’. She started releasing music in her teens and has released some of the biggest hits of the decade. Her deal with BMG marks a new chapter for Rita where she can deploy the confidence and knowledge of her artistry and audience in navigating the next phase of her career with her at the helm. I’m so proud of the past 10 years we have worked together and I’m so excited for people to hear the music she’s been creating.”

A statement on their site describes their mission statement, “Our radical approach to an often old-fashioned – and sometimes unfair – the music industry has been to focus our efforts on looking at things from the artist and songwriter’s perspective.”

After announcing the release on Monday via social media, Peters teased fans with details of how she wrote the track, cryptic lyrics, and even the first verse of the song. Her followers loved the post and connected with the lyrics, as with every song this talented artist creates. She continues to further connect with fans by answering questions and joking with fans about the song on Twitter.

Along with the single, fans can watch the lyric video on YouTube. It has gained almost 1,000 views and shows Peters at her bedroom desk turning through a notebook where she has written the lyrics. The idea appears to come from the way in which she penned the song, making “melodramatic diary entries” in her iPhone notes. Peters is always very open about her songs and her process, writing about her personal experiences, which is what makes her relatable to so many.

Maisie Peters puts out track after track, with ‘Birds Of Prey’ soundtrack song ‘Smile’ only out since February 2020, with 3 million plays on Spotify. Her EP ‘It’s Your Bed Babe, It’s Your Funeral’ was released in 2019. The singer-songwriter is set to support Niall Horan on his “Nice To Meet Ya Tour” at the end of the year. Find tickets on his official website.

Posting original music on YouTube in 2015, Peters gained popularity over the next few years, releasing two singles independently before signing with Atlantic Records. Her YouTube channel has now reached 76,000 subscribers from her self-described “emo girl pop”. With her record company, the artist has also put out two more singles including ‘Worst Of You’ which has over 62 million streams on Spotify, as well as two EPs. On YouTube, her most viewed video is ‘Stay Young’, a single release in 2019.

Atlantic Records UK President, Ben Cook, has announced that he is stepping down from his position. The announcement comes after Cook wore an “offensive” Run DMC costume to a party, seven years ago.The executive admitted that he caused offence by dressing up as a member of Run DMC, for a birthday party. In a statement, Cook said: “While my intention was to honour a musical hero, I recognize my appearance was offensive and I made a terrible mistake.”

His statement continues, “Seven years ago, at a birthday party where guests were asked to come dressed as their favourite musical icon, I came as a member of Run DMC. Late last year rumours began to circulate about my appearance at that event, many of which are simply untrue.

“As a consequence of this, I readily agreed to disciplinary actions by my employer last year. Since then however, allegations surrounding the party have continued to be made against me. I have therefore come to the conclusion that I should make this statement and step down, with immediate effect.”

Warner, Atlantic Records’ parent company, issued the following statement: “Ben Cook is leaving Atlantic UK and this will be his last week in the office.” It has been revealed that Mark Mitchell, co-president of Parlophone, will replace Cook, on an interim basis.

Cook has served as Atlantic Records’ UK President for 12 years and was appointed president, in 2014. Cook has discussed how devastated he is: “that this mistake has caused upset and has called into question my commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, values which I have championed throughout my career. I have learned a great deal from this event and will resolutely continue to champion these values moving forward.”

Cook started his career at Ministry of Sound, where he was behind some chart-topping hits such as Eric Prydz’s multi-platinum ‘Call On Me’ and Benny Benassi’s ‘Satisfaction’.

After joining, Asylum, an Atlantic subsidiary, in 2007, he worked with Wiley, which saw him take hits like ‘Wearing My Rolex’ to number two. Cook also helped build the careers for some of today’s biggest stars, including Rudimental, Charli XCX and Anne-Marie. Along with Ed Howard, Cook also signed Ed Sheeran to an album deal, in January 2011, after noting how the star’s No. 5 Collaborations Project EP had reached number two in the iTunes charts as an independent release.

Cook’s seven-year tenure as president of Atlantic Records saw the label’s share of the UK album market increase to 7.9%, which is in no small part due to Sheeran’s success. The label was also home to big-sellers by Bruno Mars, Clean Bandit and Migos.
