This August holds a pleasingly thrilling Arctangent Festival hosted in their usual spot in the outskirts of the bustling Bristol city in Fernhill Farm. They have just proudly announced a new selection of bands that have been added to their, already monumental, line up. The infamous festival will be running from the 16th August through to the 19th August.

The festival’s first ever edition was in 2013 and has made a good name for itself since. The event is known to be based on green fields and hosts a vast variety of acts ranging from small up and coming bands to well known artists within the rock scene. A community-based place in charge of making everyone feel at home.

In 2018 they won an award for the Best Small Festival at the UK Festival Awards and were shortlisted for Best Line-up Award that very same year. A binding project put together to bring the authentic rock/alternative artists of the industry to come together to create not just an event but a whole experience, in consequence, becoming the emerging UK rock festival in town.

This year’s edition includes over 100 acts and they have just announced a new batch including the Oklahoma band Chat Pile, the progressive metal band Sikth from Watford, the excitingly chaotic band Rolo Tomassi from Sheffield alongside Chinese Football, GGGOLDDD, HEALTH, Car Bomb, Caligula’s Horse, Apidae, Abraham, Burial Clouds, Hammok, Hypno5e, Pothamus, Death Goals, Lys Morke and WitchSorrow.

The selection of fresh new arrivals will be playing alongside the already announced headliners Heilung, an experimental folk band known for their time capsuling style of the Iron Age, the band Converge who maintain an important spot within the metalcore and extreme metal scene coming all the way from the US, Deafhaven playing their 2013 Sunbather album as a UK exclusive, the genre mashing French musician known as Igorrr, not to mention the well known Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs, the English heavy metal band Loathe, described accurately by their name, as well as Opeth, Messhugah, Battles, Glassjaw, Explosions In The Sky, This Will Destroy You and many, many more.

They curate their line-ups, designed originally in order to not be found anywhere else on Earth. A fully independent project running solely off a passion toward the spreading of the industry’s music that deserves to be heard internationally, creating a beloved community giving unknown bands the opportunity to prove themselves to the outer world.

UPDATE 14th April 2023

The line up has been updated since, with massive new headliner, Devin Townsend, playing on the Saturday night amongst a selection of other new bands. These include the UK progressive rockers Haken, Aiming For Enrique, YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO, Ashenspire, CLT DRP and the Guru Guru.

Tickets are live and available to buy here.

HECK, Nottingham’s answer to the 2010’s hardcore punk scene, have had a career almost as violently unpredictable as their music and performances are. After announcing their disappearance without any explanation back in 2017, the band would take to the stage at ArcTanGent Festival for the last time… apparently. But just like all great breakups – think LCD Soundsystem, Guns n Roses, or maybe even the Spice Girls – they probably won’t last as long as you may think. The band have recently taken back to their socials and announced their appearance at 2000 Trees Festival this Friday (July 8th). You can find ticket information for the festival, here.

HECK’s history has been no stranger to publicity in the few years they were in the public eye. In 2015, the group were sued by Japanese film company Toho over their original band name, “Baby Godzilla”. Obviously, it’s hard to argue the case when they own the copyright to a character literally called “Baby Godzilla” (or Godzilla Junior in a few places, but the point remains the same) so they became HECK to avoid the lawsuit causing any real damage. Once the change settled, they released their debut LP Instructions. The album was particularly reminiscent of early Dillinger Escape Plan, or even some more grindcore-esque names like Napalm Death. But the timeline didn’t extend much farther than that. The split came the following year, and no one really knows why.

“It means the damn world that so many of you are still here for this band. Thank you for your patience. Smashing will resume this Friday. Big love to one and all.” Reads the band’s returning statement. After 5 years off, the wordless surprise return goes to show that some things aren’t really meant to change. No answers. All we can do at this point is hope that some more information comes to light. Why did they go? Why are they back? Does this mean there’s new music? Will we hear it at 2000 Trees? We may never know.

After slowly but surely releasing the full line-up for the 2022 round of the Cheltenham music festival, 2000trees may have finally revealed the fact that this is the full list. Set for July 6-9, the festival announced its headlining acts – Jimmy Eat World, Turnstile, and IDLES – back in October 2021. You Me At Six, Nova Twins and Twin Atlantic, come highest up the bill in terms of new inclusions back in March. But features like; Boston Manor, Kenny Hoopla, Angel Du$t, Heavy Lungs, and many more cement 2000trees as one of the UK’s great alternative festivals at the moment.

On Friday, October 1st, Scottish/American metal outfit Frontierer released their third full-length album Oxidized, which the band has described as being “our most complete album to date and the heaviest record you will hear until our next one.” The release of the album comes just after the announcement that the group will be performing at ArcTanGent festival in Bristol, alongside the likes of TesseracT, Opeth and Cult of Luna. You can read more about the upcoming festival here.

Frontierer unveiled two singles in the months running up to the record’s release, the first being “Glacial Plasma” and its accompanying music video on August 5th, and then “Opaque Horizon” on the 9th of September. Both singles proved to be faithful harbingers of the overall sound of Oxidized: intense, heavy, and overflowing with squealing, dissonant guitars laden with unpredictable pitch-shifting effects. Vocalist Chad Kapper brings to the table ferocious, high-energy screams that do not let up throughout the album’s near fifty-minute run time, working in tandem with the ever-changing musical landscape.

The album was written, recorded and mixed at Outlier Sound in Edinburgh by Frontierer’s own Pedram Valiani, and features guest performances from Kevin McCaughey of Canadian mathcore band Ion Dissonance, and Grady Avenell of American metal/noise rock group Will Haven.

Frontierer have been active since 2013, and were originally a duo, comprised only of Kapper and producer/guitarist Valiani. They released their first E.P. The Collapse in 2013, which debuted the unrelentingly heavy, dissonant sound that they would become known for, and go on to perfect with their subsequent full-length albums, such as 2015’s Orange Mathematics and 2018’s Unloved.
Almost a year after the release of Orange Mathematics, Frontierer played their first show as a full band at the UK Tech Metal Fest. Unloved was recorded with a full band, featuring the addition of Owen Hughes on drums, Dan Stevenson on guitar and Calum Craig on bass.

Oxidized can be found on all streaming services and is also available on Bandcamp. The group operates mostly through their Bandcamp page and has several vinyl variants of the record available there, as well as CDs and a run of limited edition cassette tapes.

In addition to ArcTanGent festival, Frontierer will embark on a short UK tour supporting Devil Sold His Soul in April of next year. This will be the group’s first UK tour in almost three years. Tickets can be bought at this link, and the dates are listed down below.

The Bristol-based festival ArcTanGent has unveiled twenty-one new bands for its 2022 line-up, after postponing the 2021 festival. ArcTanGentl has been running since 2013, and since then has been known as one of the most popular British summer festivals for music inhabiting the spheres of math rock, post-rock, progressive metal, and numerous other subgenres of rock and experimental music. In the past, the festival has featured a large number of well-revered and long-running musical groups such as Explosions In The Sky, Meshuggah, Deafheaven and Russian Circles.

On the 21st of May 2021, when many other UK festivals such as End Of The Road and Reading & Leeds were still set to go ahead, ArcTanGent was unfortunately cancelled. In a statement, it was explained exactly why they could not go forward with the proceedings this year: “Every single festival in the U.K. has been asking for months for a Government backed insurance policy allowing us to confidently host events this year. We were hopeful that this insurance would be in place by now, but they simply keep ignoring our requests and without it a festival this year is just too risky.”

// Hi folks, we have some good news and we have some bad news. Please read our full statement at https://t.co/fpouTKI42C pic.twitter.com/BN49woozcs

ArcTanGent was, however, able to reveal the silver lining of the situation in that same statement, confirming that any tickets purchased for the 2021 festival were automatically valid for the following year, as well as confirming a number of bands, including the crushingly heavy Belgian sludge metal outfit Amenra, the highly esoteric hardcore punk/powerviolence group The Locust, as well as some extremely big names such as progressive metal titans Opeth. As of today, ArcTanGent has revealed an additional twenty-one bands for its 2022 line-up, initially making the announcement on Twitter. Some of the new additions include the American math rock band The Fall Of Troy, known for their high energy instrumentals and technical guitar work, Delta Sleep, Hail The Sun, Talons, and Swedish avant-garde metal group Zeal & Ardor.

UPDATE 06/11

ArcTangent Festival has now announced the addition of thirty-six fantastic new bands to the line-up. One of the most exciting groups to join the roster is American doom metal outfit Pallbearer, who will be celebrating the ninth anniversary of their debut full-length Sorrow and Extinction by playing the record in full. Also joining the line-up is the psychedelic rock/doom metal group Elephant Tree, London mathcore band Pupil Slicer and doom metal band Conjurer. You can see the full line-up below.

According to a recent press release, a member of Pupil Slicer stated: “ArcTanGent was the first music festival I ever attended and was instrumental in my love of music. The scope of bands ATG brings together across so many genres has been hugely inspirational for the direction of Pupil Slicer. It has been our dream to play ATG ever since we started the project and are honoured to be a part of this event alongside many fantastic bands that we look up to.”

UPDATE 29/03/2022

ArcTanGent Festival has now announced sixteen new acts for the 2022 line-up. Joining the roster are legendary Providence noise rock duo Lightning Bolt, eclectic UK singer-songwriter Jamie Lenman, math rock trio Covet, stoner rock outfit Bossk, Nottingham five-piece Palm Reader, Thank You Scientist, DVNE, Blanket, Zetra, Tuskar, El Moono, Heirot, Ithaca, Rubbing and Greywave. The festival will now also play host to the debut performance by Skin Failure, a band that features Will Gardner and Dave Larkin from the now-defunct Black Peaks.

ATG Festival organiser James Scarlett said, according to a press release:“This announcement might be considered the icing on the cake, but really it is so much more than that. I’ve been trying to book Lighting Bolt ever since we started ATG, so it feels like a really big booking now it has finally happened. I also think that DVNE are basically the best up and coming band in the UK, so everyone needs to check them out now – For Fans Of Mastodon and Cult of Luna. I can’t wait for August!”

You can view the up to date lineup poster below:

The 2000trees and ArcTanGent festivals that were previously cancelled have announced a joint replacement event for their 2021 editions. Both festivals were made to cancel their events this year due to the enforced COVID-19 restrictions, with the former saying they were “left with no other choice than to pull the plug before it was too late”. Now, the festivals have come together for a new event dubbed 80 Trees, set to take place across two days at the Exchange venue in Bristol on July 31 and August 1.

In an announcement, they wrote “We’ll be running the first ever 2000trees vs ArcTanGent live event in Bristol! 80-Trees…” and continued “That’s right two days and nights of ACTUAL. LIVE. GIGS showcasing some of the best bands from Trees and ATG past, present and future.”

The statement also added: “As you know we’re all super gutted that both ATG and our sister festival, 2000trees, can’t go ahead this summer. Last year we couldn’t all meet face to face so we put on our very first virtual festival – three days of awesome music recorded in lockdown by some of our favourite bands… But can watching bands on your laptop or phone really keep you going for another summer??? Na us neither!”

All the details for the festival were uploaded to their social media sites, with the line-up set to be announced next week with tickets on sale now here.

2000trees and ArcTanGent are among a growing number of UK festivals that have been cancelled this year due to the ongoing concerns caused by the pandemic. A recent survey has revealed that at least half of UK festivals have now been cancelled this year. Despite this, there are still some events set to go ahead, in July fans will be flocking to Latitude and Tramlines, with both of these events taking part in the next stage of the government’s Events Research Programme (ERP).

The ERP has seen audiences attend a weekend of events in Liverpool, the BRIT Awards and Download Festival to investigate the safety of large crowds returning to events after the coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, Green Man Festival announced that it will go ahead with its 2021 event, taking place in the Black Mountains in Wales in late August.

British rock music festival ArcTanGent has finally revealed this year’s complete line-up. Among the leading headliners appear Opeth, Tesseract, and Chealsea Wolfe—along with numerous rock acts—who will rock out at Fernhill Farm, Bristol from August 20 to 22. Tickets to the festival are already on sale via the official site.

ArcTanGent is a rock music festival held annually at Fernhill Farm near Bristol. First emerged in 2013, the festival—despite focusing on independent rock acts—has gained much popularity in the UK music scene, with an accolade as Best Small Festival from the UK Festival Awards 2018 and a nomination for the Best Line-Up award.

The festival is made up of five alternating stages, with Arc as the main one for big headliners. It also features a silent disco from 11pm to 3am every night after all the performances, alongside a variety of food and bar vendors and camping. Also, the festival promotes itself for the “friendliest and most chilled audience” one will ever find at any festival.

Opeth, a progressive metal band from Stockholm, is this year’s main headliner that will take over the Arc stage. Formed in 1989, the band has released over ten studio albums, with their twelfth LP Sorceress (2016) as their most successful record in the UK. It reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart, spawning singles such as the title track, “Will O the Wisp”, and “The Wilde Flowers”.

Apart from the Swedish rockers, gothic rock singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe has been recently announced as one of the leading names to headline the Fernhill Farm festival. She is a 36-year-old musician from Sacramento, California who has been in the gothic rock scene since 2010. In spite of being acclaimed among the underground music scene, Wolfe has embarked on tour around the globe, gaining many followers for her eccentric music that blends folk with electronics and heavy metal. Last year, she just released the sixth LP titled Birth of Violence, which she will bring the songs to the stage at the festival.

Elsewhere on the bill, two American metal bands Bell Witch and Aerial Ruins will collaborate for the metal fans at the festival. Also, there will be performances from The Hyena Kill, Petbrick, Teeth of the Sea, Bristol electronic duo Luo, and many more.
