Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of the New Year, and typically involves gift giving, bonfires and other festivities. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festival is one of the largest of its kind, and was even recognised by the Guinness Book Of World Records in their 1996-97 edition as the largest New Year’s party, with approximately 400,000 people in attendance that year.

The upcoming event will mark pop band Pulp‘s first live show in the Scottish capital in over 20 years. Attendees will be able to celebrate the New Year as they watch Pulp perform against the surreal backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

Pulp lead singer Jarvis Cocker said on the band’s upcoming appearance at ‘Concert In The Gardens’, “When your grandkids ask “Do you remember the first time Pulp played Edinburgh’s Hogmanay?” What will your answer be? Come along & start 2024 in the very best way possible. Oh yes.”

Directors of UniqueAssembly, which creates and produces Edinburgh’s Hogmanay on behalf of the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “Reaching the milestone 30th anniversary for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is a phenomenal achievement, which since 1993 has welcomed millions of party people to celebrate at the Home of Hogmanay.

“We wanted to make sure that this year was extra special for our audiences and are thrilled to welcome Pulp to the party. This will be the hottest ticket in town, and we recommend people grab their tickets fast to make sure they don’t miss out.”

Other events taking place at this year’s Hogmanay festival include a street party, silent disco, a torchlight procession and many more activities yet to be announced.

Tickets for the 30th anniversary of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay go on sale this Friday (September 29th) at 10am, which you can purchase here.

For those registered with the Hogmanay website, a pre-sale for the ‘Concert In The Gardens’ will be available from 10am on Thursday 28th September.

“Today my dad turns 75. Nas turns 50 and Amy would’ve been 40,” Ronson added. “Thinking how me and my dad would’ve partied at Nas & Amy’s amazing joint bday. We miss the Lioness so much but let’s celebrate all the legends with some of her genius.”

It has been twelve years since Winehouse passed away at age 27, joining ill-fated music icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison in the infamous 27 Club. The Grammy Award winner had openly struggled with addiction, often turning to self-destructive drugs before succumbing to alcohol poisoning in 2011.  

Many of the singer’s most popular songs, including “Back To Black”, “Love Is A Losing Game” and “You Know I’m No Good” were co-written or produced with the then up-and-coming Ronson, with whom she forged a close friendship.

When they first met in 2005, introduced to each other by Island Records music executive Darcus Beese, Winehouse was reportedly surprised at how young Ronson was, having expected an older, more seasoned producer. The budding hit-maker had put out one album by that point, a record full of the kind of superficial pop music that Winehouse despised. However, the unlikely pair instantly clicked, and soon began working on the singer’s sophomore album.

In 2021, looking back on his relationship with Winehouse, Ronson told The Guardian: “That connection happened like that […] It was an instant familiarity. I just loved being in her company, her presence. She was just so funny.”

Elsewhere, Winehouse’s band have announced a special show to mark the late singer’s 40th birthday. The one-off gig, which is set to take place at the KOKO venue in the musician’s hometown Camden on December 22, will be headlined by the very same musicians who performed alongside Winehouse from the start of her career until her untimely death.

Speaking on the show’s upcoming anniversary, former Squeeze band member Holland has given the following statement, “It’s unbelievable that this year sees my show reach its thirtieth birthday. Executive Producer Alison Howe has also given a statement,  “Later…reaching its 30th birthday is testament to Jools, all the incredible musicians who have supported us and our crew whose love and commitment of showcasing live music for the audience is unmatched. With our upcoming series, this special show and our 30th Annual Hootenanny, it’s going to be an incredible three months of live music.”

Director of Music, BBC Lorna Clarke states, “The BBC’s commitment to live music remains strong and in a year which has seen the return of live music performance, I’m hugely proud that after 30 incredible years, Later…with Jools Holland is still busy unearthing the superstars of tomorrow as well as featuring some of the world’s best-loved musicians, all to entertain the music-loving BBC viewers at home.”

A new series of the regular format of Later…With Jools Holland is also set to kick off this autumn, series 61 will be aired on 1st October 2022. The upcoming series will be available to watch on BBC Two and digitally via BBC iPlayer. Scheduled to appear with Holland are an array of guests from various eras and genres, confirmed to appear include Self Esteem, The 1975, Victoria Canal, Loyle Carner, Ural Thomas, Marcus Mumford, Burna Boy, The Big Moon, Phoenix and PVA.

Their debut album has become a modern indie classic spawning some of the band’s biggest anthems like “Not Nineteen Forever”, “Cavorting” and “What Took You So Long?”. The expanded version of St. Jude will be released on January 13, 2023 with pre-orders available here. The band shared the news of the sell-out via a Twitter post that read “Heaton Park — sold out. As quoted in the Manchester Evening News vocalist Liam Fray said of the anniversary “They grow up so fast, can’t believe our darling ‘St. Jude’ is 15 next year. Think it’s time for a celebration and we all know that great things come in threes – The Star Wars Trilogy, Sooty, Sweep & Soo and now, here we are, with the third instalment of ‘Courteeners at Heaton Park’.” Fray then went on to say “June 2015. June 2019 and now June 2023. This time to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its release we’ll be playing ‘St. Jude’ (in full) plus (of course) THE HITS. I can’t think of any better way to celebrate than to make the pilgrimage to Heaton Park with like-minded souls and lose ourselves like it’s 2008. And, because we’re good like that, we’ve remastered the original album. God bless the band. God bless the fans. Omne Trium Perfectum.”

Selling out tickets fast doesn’t seem to all that rare for The Courteeners. Back in 2021 they sold out the Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground in 2021 to over 50,000 fans in just 90 minutes, so it’s no surprise there was high demand this time around.

On September 1, the band projected the artwork from their debut album across Manchester in honour of the record’s upcoming show and anniversary. Last month, Courteeners also debuted a new song titled ‘Lie Back And Think Of England’ during an intimate headline show in London. Additionally back in November, Courteeners also released a concert film of their huge Heaton Park homecoming gig from June 2019.
