Fans of the Sheffield based band were eagerly awaiting the next few weeks, before beloved metalcore band Bring Me The Horizon’s next effort in the Post Human chapter was set to be released. Now, frontman Oli Sykes has had to dash expectations as he announced via social media that the band have had to postpone the release until sometime in the near future.

Sykes cited that the band has had to push back the release due to the album not quite achieving the lofty standards the band have for it, due to unforeseen circumstances. The singer acknowledged his fanbase’s patience over the setbacks the record has had and has promised them that the album will be released some time very soon.

The news will undoubtedly come as a disappointing surprise to Bring Me The Horizon’s legion of fans, but they will also indubitably take heart that the delay is only temporary and many will be pleased to hear that the band is unwilling to comprise on their music-only deciding to release the album when they are satisfied it is of the most perfect quality.

The disappointment will certainly be felt by the band as well, with Bring Me The Horizon enjoying a huge amount of success over the course of the year-the band’s relentless efforts culminating in a triumphantly successful headlining slot at this summer’s Download Festival, where the group began intensifying the marketing campaign for the new album.

Set to be the second instalment of four in the planned Post Human series, Bring Me The Horizon have already released two singles from the upcoming album, “Lost” and “Amen,” featuring guest spots by hip hop artist, Lil Uzi Vert and Daryl Palumbo of Glassjaw.

Sykes has often expressed his excitement over the new material, saying recently, “we’re definitely tapping into bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan and Glassjaw. There is not that much difference between a metalcore song and when you get into that world of like post-hardcore and stuff, but its more about the freeness and the kind of frantic energy of it, which was really fun to tap back into, because I always feel like even when we’re heavy, we’ve become quite a polished band. And it was very fun to kind of just throw all that out and just be, like, rough and ready again.”

Fans will be hoping Post Human: Nex Gen is not delayed too long but in the meantime, the band has released the finished version of the album’s cover art-shared by the band on social media accounts. Oli Sykes and co are enjoying what could arguably be the most prolific and successful year of their lives so far. Releasing two massive hit singles in “Lost” and “Amen”, the band also headlined the Download main stage on the festival’s second night-a performance that solidified the band as one of the most important rock acts in the scene today, silencing any remaining doubters they may have.

Shortly after, the band announced their new album, Post Human: Nex Gen, slated for a September release. But Bring Me the Horizon are not ready to rest on their laurels just yet and are aiming to keep the momentum up amongst the lofty heights the group have been elevated to over the past year. In quick succession, Bring Me the Horizon have announced collaborations on hip hop artist Lil Uzi Vert’s new album Pink Tape, appearing on song “Werewolf” and Corpse’s new single “Code Mistake”.

A collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert may not have come as a  surprise to many fans of the Sheffield five-piece- after the Philadelphia based rapper appeared on Bring Me the Horizon’s newest single “Amen”-but the rocking, very Bring Me the Horizon-esque “Werewolf” will make Lil Uzi Vert fans imagine that the hip hop artist definitely has a heavy metal side and one he is loving exploring.

Just last week, Bring Me the Horizon further stunned fans when American Youtube personality and musician Corpse Husband (simply stylised Corpse musically) dropped a single of his own, featuring the band. “Code Mistake” represents a collaboration that may have been in the works for quite a while now, with the Youtuber saying back in 2021, “what if I did a song with Bring Me the Horizon? That’d be crazy. That would be fucking wild right?” It appears crazier things are possible, as a Bring Me the Horizon/Corpse collaboration is now a reality.

There really is no telling where Bring Me the Horizon will pop up (unexpectedly) next but the fact that the purveyors of some of the most heavy music in recent years are featuring on such eclectic artist’s work is a notable sign of a significant sea change in the metal scene. Long a style of music that never quite emerged from the depths of the underground, acts like Bring Me the Horizon, Architects and Sleep Token have proven that there is a very healthy appetite for the more extreme tastes of the music palette.

The song’s title and lyrical content are supported by the musical arrangement in the chorus where layered backing vocals and call and response techniques are used to create a gospel feel. The sections in the song are contrasting with the verses allowing vocals to take the forefront, with only a few chords played on a piano or strummed on an acoustic guitar and hand claps and clicks marking the backbeat. The chorus takes a step up in the dynamic with the entry of simple, supportive drums and additional vocals.

The song’s stripped back, acoustic style is suitable for an autumn release and has benefited from a laid back version for Radio 1’s Piano Sessions. The focus in this release it Grennan’s unique and gravelly vocal performance which stands out amongst the sparse arrangement. While the theme of religion is key to the tune’s expressive chorus, this is used more as a metaphor for the variety of things which people put their faith in.

The influence of Gospel and Rhythm and Blues can be felt throughout this track, especially in Grennan’s approach to singing which is at once passionate and deeply powerful. It is a trade mark of Rhythm and Blues music to have strong, emotional vocal performances and lyrics of a deeply personal nature, both of which Grennan achieves in this song. On top of this, the use of handclaps through the verses to mark the backbeat and the simple drums in the chorus show a mature understanding of rhythm and the vocal phrasing shows a good feel for where the pulse lies at all times.

The positive response to the single may be in part due to the online performance Grennan recorded at Brixton Academy to support the release and album release announcement later that day. According to Clash Music, streamers ‘were treated to well-loved songs from Grennan’s debut album ‘Lighting Matches,’ and new songs too.’ ‘Lighting Matches,’ was released on 6th July 2018 and spent 3 weeks in the UK top 40, according to the Official Charts. Performing live streamed gigs is becoming more and more common amongst UK musicians who are using it as a way to continue performing despite very limiting restrictions on social gatherings.

Speaking about the new album, Radio X reports Grennan’s social media announcement which explained that ‘Evering Road,’ is an address in Clapton where ‘Grennan lived with his ex.‘ and it is a fitting title since he describes the whole album as ‘all about a past relationship.’ The album promises to be an honest look into the like of one of the UK’s most sensitive songwriters and powerful vocalists. The emotional singer songwriter is certainly looking to be a common trope with Grennan in good company of artists such as Lewis Capaldi working in a similar style and achieving great success.
