John Squire of The Stone Roses has shared his struggles following an injury that threatened his ability to play the guitar. Speaking to The Guardian, Squire said, “It did panic me.”

Squire detailed the incident, sharing that he broke his wrist back in 2020 when playing basketball with his son. His thumb on his dominant hand was affected, leaving him unsure of whether his guitar-playing days would have to be put behind him. He said, “There was a question mark over whether I would get full use of it back.”

Fortunately, Squire has been able to regain his abilities through a rigorous regime of physiotherapy. The incident ultimately “didn’t just force him to play again; it reignited his desire to do so.”

Squire has recently collaborated with Liam Gallagher on a much-anticipated single, “Just Another Rainbow.” Speaking on the collaboration, Squire shared, “I think we were both surprised at how complementary my guitar tone is with his voice and how the songs I’ve written worked for him.“

Gallagher and Squire have hinted that this will be the start of an ongoing musical relationship, with Gallagher commenting, “If John comes up with another load of songs that are banging, they’ll get it as well. Squire’s got a lot more in him. People look at John as this guitar hero, but he definitely knows how to write a fucking song.”

Squire also reflected on the Stone Roses reunion back in 2016 which ultimately fell flat. The iconic 80s Manchester group came together to put out two new singles, “All For One” and “Beautiful Thing” but a new album never came to fruition. Despite selling out stadiums across the UK and headlining numerous festivals, Squire said, “the general feeling was that nobody was that into even being in a band together, never mind making an album.”

The Stone Roses ultimately disbanded again, leaving a lull in Squire’s music career. Instead, he turned to visual art, co-creating the artwork for “Just Another Rainbow.” He said, “It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, or whether it’s visual or sonic. What makes me tick is creating.”

When questioned on any regrets he may have had within his music career, Squire shared, “There’d be a trade-off. I might not be married. I might not have as many children and I might not have seen as much of them. I don’t feel like I’ve massively fucked up.”

Squire has hinted at more upcoming tracks and has teased some potential tour dates, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

In preparation for their stadium/arena/park performances, The Stone Roses are soon to be playing two warm-up gigs in Halifax and Carlisle.

7/6 – Victoria Theatre – Halifax
8/6 – Sands Centre – Carlisle

Tickets were announced on Facebook with the following carful instructions for fans to obtain tickets:

to personal callers only with a Stone Roses record, concert ticket or t-shirt. Tickets limited to 2 per person. £25(plus booking fee for credit/debit card).

Fans commented on the process:

“Great way of genuine fans getting to see them, old Skool having to turn up to buy a ticket, rather than all the robots buying all the tickets and reselling them on at stupid prices!”

Another fan commented on the different souvenirs fans have dug out of their display cabinets and attics:

“Seen all sorts of souvenirs in the Halifax queue… someone has just walked past with a stone roses lampshade.”

Queues, of course, formed quickly and tickets were quickly grabbed up for both intimate gigs.
The band were forced to cancel their Japan visit – a reminder of their huge shows is as follows:
15-19/6 – Etihad Stadium – Manchester
30/6 – Madison Square Garden – New York City
8/7 – T in the Park Festival
9/7 – Marlay Park – Dublin

Last month we reported on the band’s release of their new single ‘All for One’ (see article here) which received very mixed reviews. Diehard fans were fully supportive of the nostalgic release which was sharply contrasted by critics who slated the lyrics and musical performance.

The above shows will by highly anticipated for fans lucky enough to have tickets. We look forward to a potential third album release.

Fans have been waiting 21 year years for this.

I say ‘resurrected’ but The Stone Roses has always been around as their distinct sound is frequently played on TV, in public houses, and on the radio.

‘All For One’, The Stones Roses’ first single since the release of B-sides from ‘Ten Storey Love Song’ in March 1995.

Critics have taken time to pick fault and analyse it to death but surely the single should be celebrated whatever its sound. Certainly for fans who were following the band since 1989 and attended those famous university gigs, they will be nostalgic about this release.

But even for fans like me who were not quite old enough at the time but discovered both Roses albums as part of their love of indie music of the mid-to-late 90s will appreciate their strong presence in the history of British music.

‘All For One’ was premiered on Annie Mac’s Radio One show on the evening of Thursday 12/5.

Manchester saw a series of ‘lemon’ advertisements around the city. Die-hard fans will have made the link.

Mxdwn reported an announcement back in February that The Stone Roses were to play New York’s Madison Square Garden – see article here. On top of this, they are to perform the below venues which opens in their hometown:

15-19/6 – Etihad Stadium – Manchester
30/6 – Madison Square Garden – New York City
8/7 – T in the Park Festival
9/7 – Marlay Park – Dublin

NME revealed that The Stone Roses were in a London studio working on new material, so a new album to coincide with the June Etihad dates will be of no surprise. Mxdwn will announce the release of this third album upon the breaking news. I doubt it will be entitled Third Coming! Listen to ‘All for One’ below:
