The book, published by the company Ebury Spotlight, will be released in hardback, digital and audiobook upon its publication. The cover, announced with the book, features Cooper’s face in his infamous stage makeup, which has been a trademark part of his act since his ascendency to rock god status in the mid-1970s.

The book, according to Cooper, is built around the the theme of “evilution” and his struggles in distinguishing his own self, born Vincent Furnier, from his creation which threatened to destroy him through substance abuse and alcoholism in the late ‘70s. “I was born Vincent Damon Furnier but, seduced by my character’s reputation, changed my name legally to Alice Cooper, and in the process lost sight of who I really was”, Cooper claimed.

The singer has said that he wants the book to take on a didactic role in helping readers understand the contradictions of their own identity. He said that “with the benefit of hindsight and a certain maturity, I’d like to describe our journey to Hell and back together, because it’s not only rock stars who can lose their way.”

In the press release announcing the book, Cooper’s team said that the book’s tales will feature appearances from Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Salvador Dali, Bette Davis, Gerald Ford and Frank Sinatra among others, chronicling the highs and lows of a life spent often outside the musical mainstream for his visual extremity.

Cooper’s career began in the late 1960s with the band of the same name, of which he was merely the frontman. While the band had a string of chart successes with singles like ‘School’s Out’, it wasn’t until he went solo in 1975 that he fully realised his persona with the concept album ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’. The next decade was marked by dizzying hits and stunning lows with huge albums like ‘Alice Cooper Goes to Hell’ and a decline into substance abuse. With the late 1980s, having cleaned up, he became a figurehead of MTV hair metal with albums like ‘Trash’. Touring and hosting radio shows for decades after, he reunited the original band last year for an album, ‘The Revenge of Alice Cooper’.

The book tour will run across the UK from 11 October for nine days.

Both acts will perform six dates and kick off the co-headline tour in May next year in a newly opened Swansea Arena and finish off in Leeds.

Alice Cooper has released his 21st solo album at the beginning of this year. The release reached No4 UK Albums Charts and received overall critics praise. In Detroit Stories, the musician “pays homage to his roots and hometown with an album full of songs that admire and expand upon Detroit’s 1960s rock’n’roll spirit”. 

“Detroit Stories showcases Cooper’s Detroit roots and vocal range. The guitar-driven album features captivating solos and many well-known Detroit influences. English rock band The Cult released their 10th studio album in 2016. Hidden City reached No 19 in UK Charts and received great notes, with four stars from The Guardian and three and a half from Spillmagazine. The second has called the album “a metaphor to reflect our spiritual and inner lives“.

The musicians postponed their 2020 tour last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic: “The health and safety of our fans is and always will be our number one concern. It is for this reason we have made the decision to reschedule our European Tour until 2021.” The new dates were supposed to start on 5th August in Birmingham and finish on 4th September in Istanbul. 

When the tour was first announced in 2019, Cooper promised: “This show has something for everyone. I like to joke that The Vampires are the world’s most expensive bar band, but what a lot of people don’t realise is that this is a real rock band, not just some novelty. I wouldn’t keep doing it if it weren’t such a great band. Everybody gets along, the musical chemistry is as good as it gets and the show will be the highest energy hard rock shows you will see all year. I never get tired of playing with these guys!” Joe Perry added: “I’m looking forward to be getting back on the road with the guys in the Vampires this summer. It’s going to be great to get to play a bunch of tunes from our new album as well as a few from our dead, drunk friends. The last tour we were firing on all cylinders and it’s because of the great support from our fans that we really push the pedal to the floor. You can expect much of the same in September. We can’t wait to get over and prove it.”

Hollywood Vampires self – titled debut album came out in 2015 and has been described by Ultimate Classic Rock as “a brilliant, brooding dissonance with bleak humour and fizzy anger against the dying of the light” and consisted of two original songs and covers of the Who, John Lennon and Jimmy Hendrix. 

Their second album ‘Rise’ was released in 2019 and gained three starts by Rolling stone magazine. With thirteen original tracks and three covers, Kerrang described it: “the enterprise is taken in some interesting new directions, with its constituent members playing largely to their strengths”.
