Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival removed several UK artists from their annual show that will take place from 2nd to 17th July.
Festival organisers shared the news last Friday (25th June): “We are sorry to announce the cancellation of Rag’n’Bone Man, Inhaler, Alfa Mist and Yussef Dayes Trio’s concerts at the Montreux Jazz Festival, due to the present conditions of entry into Switzerland from the UK for travellers who are not fully vaccinated“.
Switzerland eased out its lockdown on the 26th of June however, travellers from countries including the UK will need to go under 10 days quarantine unless they are vaccinated or fully recovered from the virus. “The arrival of these artists depends on their vaccination status and that of those around them on tour, as well as their possibilities of quarantine at the start of their European tour or before their concert at the summery” – explains the press release.
As a result of the restrictions, British artists won’t be able to perform at the festival. They have been already replaced with Zucchero, Woodkid, Benny Sings & Athletic Progression as per the announcement.

The Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the few that will take place this year. Other famous ones, St Gallen Open -Air and Bern’s Gurten festivals have been cancelled for the second time in a row, due to the ongoing and unstable situation with the Covid-19 virus.
More than half of the UK’s festivals and world festivals have been already cancelled or postponed until next year. Reading and Leeds festival will still go ahead this August with Queens of the Stone Age and Post Malone as headliners, also All Points East has a green light for this year with Little Simz, Kano and Jamie xx included in the bill.

“Festival organisers have been talking for several months about alternative line-ups and what they might look like for the obvious reasons of travel restrictions. The general sense out there is that it won’t really matter to audiences this year in terms who headlines and who’s playing“.

Alfa Mist has just dropped a COLORS SHOW performance of ‘Organic Rust’, a single that the East Londoner released last month from his forthcoming album ‘Bring Backs’. The 9-track LP is set to drop on April 23rd and will be Alfa’s fourth studio album.

Discussing the release of ‘Organic Rust’ in a press statement, Alfa explained both the meaning of the song and the album title: “In the UK version of Blackjack the ‘Bring Backs’ Rule means you can’t celebrate your win until the next round is over, ‘Organic Rust’ is a song about being at odds with the idea of success and how that can lead to apathy.”

Indeed, the song borders on nihilism, opening with the lines: “Serious face cos it’s really a race/ Trying to stabilise while my health deteriorates.” These personal thoughts slowly morph and expand into existentialist reflections as his rap progresses, culminating in Alfa’s final thought: “When it all gives way and I’ve had enough/ I got a few words for the man above/ When I’m Organic Rust, trust/ Can it just…/ …turn to Organic Rust?”

In the COLORS SHOW performance of the song, Alfa sits alone with an electric piano and a microphone. Notably, the melancholic tone of the track is at odds with the pink room that the people at COLORS chose to put him in, a disjunction that was probably intentional. Alfa’s monotonous delivery and deadpan expression similarly enhance the song’s nihilistic charm.

The pianist, producer and MC has an extensive catalogue of music, ranging from sprawling ten-minute jazz cuts to lo-fi hip-hop tracks. ‘Organic Rust’ falls somewhere in the middle of the two, as a track that overlays minor jazz piano runs onto ethereal downtempo hip-hop production. Whilst talking about his previously released single ‘Run Outs’ in a press statement, he seems to suggest that this sort of blend is the result of a conscious effort: “I used to think of making beats and playing with a band as separate worlds until I realised I was always trying to achieve the same thing. Making the music I want to make.”

‘Organic Rust’ similarly dissolves the border between these two musical worlds. Whilst jazz and hip-hop have a long-standing history with one another, Alfa’s music really explores how the two genres can continue to develop together. Combining conscious lyricism with contemporary jazz sensibilities, the Newham-raised sensation has put himself at the forefront of London’s jazz renaissance.
