Arguably, the greatest debut album of the early 2000’s rock scene, ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ by Panic!
The October 20 announcement of the garden- fresh edition was shortly after everyone was riding the high of When We Were Young Fest. The Las Vegas festival featured a headline show from Panic! At The Disco in which the band performed the notorious album in its entirety for the first time in over 20 years.

An album riddled with circus ideology, intertwining literature references into lyricism and red waistcoats, this record was far too ahead of its time. Among fans, ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’ is deemed the bands greatest work, this is solely due to the fact the band were still, well, a functioning band. It’s the only record with the original lineup of Brendon Urie, Ryan Ross, Brent Wilson and Spencer Smith.

Released in the September of 2005 through record labels, Decaydance and Fueled by Ramen, the album is divided into two stylistic halves, the first being primarily electronic pop-punk and the latter featuring a more baroque-pop influence, with a little more traditional instrumentation. The album is home to the bands hit single, ‘I Write Sins Not Tragedies’, it rapidly became one of the biggest modern rock hits and to this day still withholds its space on alternative radio stations.

The album still holds up in modernity due to its theming and genre -bending narrative. Ross’s lyricism paired with Urie’s otherwordly vocals resulted in an ethereal musical marriage. With tracks referencing Chuck Palahniuk novels and discussing themes of addiction, Ross’s influence was evident. Unfortunately this is where the band fell short in recent years, losing their wunderkind writer left them scrambling to replicate these touching songs. Upon the records release, the band were young both literally and figuratively, they were taking a huge risk making such an unconventional stylised release, but it sure worked out in their favour. We are yet to see a debut album quite as impressive in its craft and its legacy.

Dishearteningly, for fans worldwide there is not a single sliver of hope for the original lineup to reunite. Ross left the band in 2009, along with the band’s replacement bassist Jon Walker. Wilson was exiled from the band due to his inability to musically progress. Whilst Smith stayed in the band alongside Urie, he departed in 2015, this left Urie the only standing original member.

Whilst we may never get another original circus-esque show, it is a joy to see, ‘A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out’, receiving its flowers all these years later.

The anniversary release will feature updated cover artwork and a remastered version of her frequently sampled hit song ‘Hide And Seek’, which has been released ahead of the full record. The engineer of the original track, Simon Heyworth, has worked on the remastering of the album alongside Heap. The two spoke about the process and influences in a recent YouTube video.

After four studio albums, Heap’s last project was her 28-tracked 2014 album ‘Sparks’, an atmospheric elevation of electropop. Since then, she has worked on the soundtrack Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, and had her ‘Speak For Yourself’ lead single ‘Headlock’ go viral on TikTok.

The song re-entered the UK Top 40 charts in January this year– two decades after its original release. Fans used the track on TikTok to edit popular shows, such as the Netflix thriller series Squid Game.

With her streaming revival, the artist then released a new EP ‘Off Cuts’ with her electronic pop duo group Frou Frou. The singer began producing music with fellow member Guy Sigsworth in 1996 with their only studio album released in 2002, ‘Details’. Their reunion couldn’t have come at a better time, and their hit single from the album, ‘A New Kind Of Love’, has reached over 200 million streams since its release in 2022.
Heap has a few more exciting plans with her tech pop production, speaking in an interview with The Guardian on her vision to use an AI twin to streamline her music process. She says, “It’s about empowering the song to have the tools to go and collaborate, to go and make love with different people,”.

This will be the final song from the Beatles, as the track was created by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr with John Lennon and George Harrison being incorporated with the help of AI software, via using isolated demo tracks. The song was mentioned by both McCartney and Starr across the year, and its release was hinted earlier this week with projection images of cassettes across important landmarks related to the band in Liverpool like the Cavern Club and Strawberry Fields.

The track ‘Now and Then’, was first wrote by John Lennon in the late 1970’s, with a demo recorded with just piano and vocals from Lennon in his New York home. The recording was given to McCartney, Starr and Harrison in 1994, alongside already released demo recordings: ‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’, tracks that were released in the mid 1990’s as part of The Beatles Anthology.

Technological limitations at the time meant that the band couldn’t build upon the demo mix of ‘Now and Then’ as they did with the other songs, because they couldn’t find a way to separate Lennon’s piano and vocals to create a clear mix, something which was able to be achieved with modern day AI technology. George Harrison’s widow, Olivia commented on this, saying: “Back in 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard”.

Paul McCartney commented on the new recording saying: “It’s quite emotional. And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.” Ringo Starr also added: “It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room so it was very emotional for all of us. It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”

The creation of the new song was inspired by the AI audio technology used in the Peter Jackson ‘Get Back’ documentary, which released in 2021 as the technology was able to isolate conversations from videos of recording sessions of Let It Be. The band used the technology to remix Revolver in 2022, before deciding to use the technology to revisit ‘Now and Then’.

The Red and Blue compilation albums will also be reissued and remixed the following week on November 10th, with 21 tracks being newly added, 9 on Blue and 12 on Red. This includes newly mixed tracks from singles and albums that had not been previously remixed across the past 6 years with tracks like ‘Help!’ from Help!, ‘Nowhere Man’ from Rubber Soul and ‘Hey Bulldog’ from Yellow Submarine Soundtrack, just to name a few.
