Justin Hawkins, his brother Dan Hawkins, eccentric bassist Frankie Poullain, and new drummer Rufus Taylor tell their story, in their own words of The Darkness comeback tale.

Set to hit cinemas on November 9, Welcome To The Darkness will be showcased for a limited engagement, with the possibility of encores due to the overwhelming demand. Welcome To The Darkness offers an unfiltered glimpse into the inner workings of a revered “cult band” as they navigate the challenges of the music industry and strive to revive glory days. With unprecedented access to the band members and their personal lives, this documentary promises to be an intimate and revealing portrait of The Darkness.

Prior to the documentary’s premiere, a highly anticipated Permission To Land deluxe album release is scheduled for October 6, distributed by Warner Music. This exceptional release encompasses a comprehensive collection, available in various formats including a five-LP package, a four-CD+DVD package, and a double-CD package.

Furthermore, the album will be accessible on all major digital streaming platforms, allowing listeners to experience its entirety in all its magnificence. This album notably includes their most renowned single, ‘I Believe In A Thing Called Love‘.

In December, the band will wrap up their musical pursuits with a sold-out tour throughout the United Kingdom, signifying a triumphant end to their year.

The announcement is accompanied with the release of the first single from the album “Penge“. You can listen to the new single below, which lead singer John Lydon described as “something of a medieval Viking epic.”

The single was released yesterday, on April 11th, before the news of the tour and album was announced. The band posted videos of the band in the studio on Twitter in anticipation of the release, as shown below.

The big announcement comes after the news that John Lydon‘s wife of forty-four years, Nora Forster, died this week at the age of eighty. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2018. The band posted the news on Twitter, as seen below, also announcing that the upcoming album would be released in her honour.

They also announced below their plans to continue with the release and tour, despite the awful news.

The final song on the album “Hawaii“, was released earlier this year, in honour of John’s wife. It is described on the band’s official website as “the most personal piece of songwriting and accompanying artwork that John Lydon has ever shared. The song is a love letter to John’s late wife Nora.”

The statement continued, calling it “A pensive, personal yet universal love song that has resonated with many since its release in January, the song sees John reflecting on their lifetime well spent and in particular one of their happiest moments together in Hawaii. John said, “Nora loved the album, she wouldn’t have wanted us to postpone it or change any of our plans.” Previously he has said of Hawaii, “It is dedicated to everyone going through tough times on the journey of life, with the person they care for the most.”

The band, also known as PiL, was formed by singer John Lydon, formerly of the Sex Pistols, in 1978. He formed the band with guitarist Keith Levene, bassist Jah Wobble, and drummer Jim Walker, but has remained the only constant member since. The band’s music is of the post-punk genre, but has a distinct experimental sound often associated with John Lydon’s style of singing.

The band released their debut album First Issue in 1978, the first of 11 albums. There was a seventeen year hiatus between 1992 and 2009, before Lydon brought the band back together for two new albums and a world tour. In 2018, PiL celebrated their 40th anniversary with the release of a box set of career highlights, a documentary, which were both called The Public Image Is Rotten’, and a 32-date UK/Europe/Japan tour.

John Lydon, Lu Edmonds, Scott Firth and Bruce Smith continue as the official line up of PiL.

Speaking on their win from L.A, 5 Seconds of Summer have stated, “What’s up, UK! We did it! We’re the f*cking Number 1 album! We honestly just can’t believe it. Thank you everyone, so much. We love you. You’re amazing. I’m going to cry now.“

Consisting of members Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford, the group’s fifth studio album garnered great success within multiple charts. It has been confirmed that the release’s highly profitable week consisted of 78% physical sales, becoming this week’s most physically purchased record as well as the most downloaded album within the UK.

The band’s recent album was released on 23rd September 2022 via BMG Rights Management; work began on 5SOS5 immediately after the release of CALM. The album’s existence and release were announced during the band’s Take My Hand World Tour, held across the Summer this year; the band performed the singles “Easy For You To Say” and “Blender” for the first time live. The hitmakers proceeded the album’s launch with the singles “Complete Mess“, “Taken My Hand“, “Me Myself & I“, “Blender“, and “Older“.

Elsewhere within this week’s UK album charts, Lap 5 by D-Block Europe places in second place. The British hip hop collective last landed within the UK album chart’s top 5 in 2020 with The Blue Print: Us vs Them; the release marked their first studio album but was preceded by multiple mixtapes. The group’s recent release has been named this week’s most streamed album and marks their seventh release to break into the top 40 and third UK top 5; D-Block Europe first entered the top 5 with their 2019 mixtape PTSD, which reached number four.

Landing at number three this week is Gulp! by Sports Team; the British alt-rockers released the album on 23rd September 2022. Marking their second studio album, Gulp! is the band’s first entry into the top 3 and has been named this week’s number one record on the Official Vinyl Albums Chart as well as the Official Record Store Chart. The band’s recent album comes two years after the release of their debut album Deep Down Happy; the album dropped in 2020 and entered a chart battle with Lady GaGa’s All Time Low, Sports Team’s first chart entry positioned at number two.

The special anniversary edition has become a hotly anticipated release due to its additional content; the full tracklisting of the original release is partnered with bonus tracks, B-sides, previously unreleased recordings and never-before-released live tracks taken from the archive at Virgin Records. Included within the exclusive content is a demo recording of fan favourite “Step To Me”, a track not included in Spiceworld’s initial release. Originally written for inclusion on debut album Spice, “Step To Me” was utilised within an advertisement campaign for Pepsi featuring the Spice Girls.

Included within the digital deluxe version of Spiceworld 25 are a collection of live songs taken from recordings of their Europe and North American tour conducted in 1997-1998. With the purchase of the digital deluxe edition, the tracklist will also feature a new “ambient” version of the landmark single “Viva Forever”. During its original release, the pop ballad was accompanied by a new infamous music video featuring the band as animated fairies; the single holds great importance within the band’s career as it marked the departure of Geri Halliwell. The remixed version of the track was created by John Themis, known for his work with Bunton on her solo track “What Took You So long”. The 25th-anniversary edition of Spiceworld also includes a 15-minute megamix entitled “Spice Girls Party Mix”, serving as a musical montage of the band’s career; the mega mix incorporates the quintet’s biggest hits.

Initially released in November 1997, Spiceworld was the band’s second studio album, released a year after their seminal debut album Spice. After the release of their first studio album, the Spice Girls were propelled into stardom and soon became household names. With the tornado of Spice Girls fever came a new feminist revolution; the phrase Girl Power became not just the band’s tagline but a motto for a new generation. Upon its initial release, Spiceworld debuted at the top of the UK album charts and spent three weeks as the UK’s number one album.

During the 1997 album’s production, its visual partner Spiceworld was released in theatres; the album served as the soundtrack to the feature film, including all of its tracks except for “Move Over”. With the release of Spiceworld the movie, Spice Girls morphed from British pop stars into bonified movie stars. Both the film and album became worldwide hits turning the group into cultural icons seemingly overnight; amongst the heavy media attention attracted due to Spiceworld’s success, an incident involving the then Prince Charles also got the world talking. In 1997 the Spice Girls were invited to play in front of the royal family for the first time; during the appearance, Mel B and Geri Halliwell caused a stir when they both kissed the now King Charles. The year of Spiceworld’s release was a significant era of the band’s career, a rollercoaster of immense success and hits cemented their status as a prototype for a successful girl group within the pop music genre.

Since their creation in 2014, NFTs have been utilised by various musical acts to offer fans exclusive content. They have also gained vast popularity throughout all avenues of the entrainment industry. Standing for Non-fungible token, an NFT serves as a record stored on a blockchain typically attached to digital and physical assets. Each comes with metadata and unique ID codes; this information is used to separate each NFT. Their use has extended further than music, culture and the arts; this recent invention has even been used to represent properties and rights such as real estate.

The first instance of a release containing NFT data coming to the charts was made this April, it was confirmed that The Amazons’ forthcoming new album would be eligible to enter the UK album charts. The British rockers will release How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me? this September, the album will come with an attached digital boxset edition of the Vinyl release and additional NFT digital content.

The track is the fourth song released from the album, following the previous release of the singles “The Funeral”, “Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today”, and “Memories” (feat. Willow). However, “The Emperor” is the only one of the tracks that will be on the deluxe release of the album.“The Emperor” is a raucous number, and US sports network ESPN has chosen the song as the official anthem for the upcoming College Football season.

Harrison reacted to the news in a statement reported by NME, “It’s a massive honour to have my song ‘The Emperor’ chosen as the anthem for ESPN’s college football season”.

Harrison continued, “I wrote this song when I was seventeen, it was just an outburst of unfiltered energy that I knew would have its moment one day. I played it live for years but never found the right time to release it until now. College football is such a massive part of American culture and all I ever want to do is bring energy to people, so I can’t wait for the song to bring that energy to the fans and the players at the games all season.”

“The Emperor” is a stark contrast to his recent version of his single, “Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today”, which he released last month. In a statement for the song, Harrison stated his intentions for the track, “I wanted this song to be a little part of someone’s day. No matter what they’re going through, they can put this on and feel a bit stronger today. That’s the vision; that’s the dream.”

The original version of the song was nothing but pop-rock, but the latest version Harrison shared is a mellow acoustic affair that the artist titled  “Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today (Sad Version)”.

Talking to NME recently about his eponymous third album, Harrison revealed the reasons behind calling the album Yungblud: “The name Yungblud, as it’s gotten bigger, has been twisted relentlessly as every single person has had an opinion on who I am. This album is not a ‘woe is me’ rockstar story; it’s about me reclaiming my own name, and humanising the caricature that everybody else has made me into”.

Yungblud is his third album and follows 2020’s Weird!, which debuted at number 1 on the UK Album Chart, selling 39,000 copies in its first week. Yungblud comes out on September 2^nd, you can preorder it here.

Metric members Emily Haines, James Shaw, Joshua Winstead and Joules Scott Key explain the origins of the name of their new album in the press release for the tour. Formentera is named after Ibiza, the paradise party island off the coast of Spain, a place none of the band members had actually been; its distant siren song inspiring them thousand of miles away back in Toronto. Guitarist and co-producer Shaw goes on to explain, “We had been living in our imaginations for a long time, because we couldn’t physically go anywhere else. When you listen to the album from beginning to end, you start with this immediate feeling of tension building, of being stuck in a loop, and then there’s this intense release that happens… you’re swept off your feet into the title track ‘Formentera’ and it’s like you escaped.”

Primal Scream’s UK tour is to mark the 30th anniversary of the seminal album Screamadelica. In celebration of the album’s release, the tour’s setlist sees the band perform their third studio album in full. The group’s headlining tour began at the start of the month with a performance in Glasgow and has two more dates left. The tour’s next stop is on 21^st July 2022 with a set at Standon Calling, the concluding performance is scheduled to take place on 22nd July 2022 at Welsh venue Alexandra Head.

Originally released on 23^rd September 1991 via Creation Records, Screamadelica will celebrate its official 30th birthday this autumn. The album has become a key part of the band’s history as the release confirmed the band’s adoption of a new sound. Prior to its release, Primal Scream had made a name for themselves within the indie rock genre, Screamadelica saw the band take inspiration from the house music scene which had exploded at the start of the decade. The album is steeped in musical history and holds importance for its involvement with the Mercury Music Prize, the album was crowned the acclaimed accolade’s first ever winner in 1992.

Saturday’s show was not the first time that Marr and Primal Scream have shared a stage, the 58-year-old musician joined the band in 2019 at the end of their set in Manchester’s Albert Hall. Similar to last night’s cameo, Marr also played on the live renditions of “Jailbird” and the 1994 single “Rocks”.

The recent collaboration with Primal Scream is one of many guest appearances Marr has made this Summer. Earlier within the month, Marr joined Grunge icons Pearl Jam on stage during their second date at BST Hyde Park. Last month also saw Marr share a stage with Alicia Keys; whilst performing at Manchester’s AO Arena, the American pianist invited Marr to perform the classic Smiths song “This Charming Man”. During the set Keys said to the crowd, “I’ve talked a lot about New York tonight, Now I want to talk about Manchester.” As the musician walked on stage Keys announced his arrival by shouting “Johnny Marr!”.

Two special new releases of the album will also drop in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Screamadelica; Screamadelica 12’’ Singles box set and Screamadelica double Vinyl picture disc will be available from 17th September 2022. Primal Scream will also release a brand-new collection of previously unreleased demos and early recordings, entitled Demodelica the new album will be released on 15th October 2022. The upcoming album will be available to order in various formats including digital, double vinyl, CD and C-90 cassettes, also included within the upcoming collection are liner notes penned by acclaimed writer John Savage.

During the group’s ten years together, they have released five studio albums and will utilise this back catalogue to mark the anniversary, a special greatest hits fanzine will be released on 14th October. The compilation has been created with a very personal touch and will contain different forms of media, including photos, special edition band merchandise, art cards and a CD with a tracklist of unreleased recordings. All the specially curated contents will be enclosed within a zine book, the publication will also include documents which chart the band’s career, further exclusive photographs of the group and the band member’s personal objects, a QR which provides more links to content and exclusively created band interviews.

Brittain McVey has spoken with BANG Showbiz concerning the group’s tin anniversary, “I think for a lot of people, there are various moments over the last 10 years that offer up nostalgia. Up until this point, every tour has been based on a specific album, like last year we had the ‘Cherry Blossom’ album and tour in September. But this one is going to be different because we want to get all the albums from the last decade into the show. Hopefully, it will be the sort of show where – some people might have been really big fans of the first or the second album and we want people to relive those moments with us. It’s going to be emotional, but it’s going to be so hard to pick a set list because we’ve got five albums now!”

Throughout the group’s career they have enjoyed great success, The Vamps scored their first number one album with their third studio album Night & Day and received two Gold certifications for their first two albums Meet The Vamps and Wake Up. Due to their commercial success, the band have worked with some big names in music such as Demi Lovato on the 2014 single “Somebody To You” and performed with Taylor Swift on tour.

Frontman Simpson has also spoken on the group’s experiences, the singer talks about how the band had opportunities to meet and work with their heroes, “Meeting Dave Grohl for me was just ridiculous because he’s been one of my idols for so long. They say don’t meet your heroes but it was just very inspiring to learn that you can be a good person and also just be a sheer legend. Connor got to meet Brendon Urie from Panic at the Disco. James as well, like when we got to tour with Taylor [Swift] which was amazing.”

The anniversary campaign’s live aspect is soon approaching, the band’s The Greatest Hits Tour will kick off on 23rd November 2022 at Manchester’s 02 Apollo. The group will perform at the Brighton Centre on 25th November 2022 and will appear at London’s The 02 Arena on 27th November 2022. “Brother To You” is a particularly touching moment of the album, coming in at track number 4, Nick sings “Being a brother to you wasn’t easy for me, Head full of toxic scenes and other people’s dreams, Oh my days what a waste if I can turn it back make the change, I have missed your face, your mind, your company”. It comes only 6 months or so after losing his older brother back in December last year and is a raw and emotional apology for taking time for granted. Speaking recently with Dork Magazine Nick said “It’s about atonement and apology and writing it has been relief for me. From these personal origins it’s been cool to see how much people resonate with the song. It seems like most people have someone in their past who they would like to say this kind of message to.”

Nick has also spoken on some of the influences that inspired New Mythology with Clash, including Brian Eno, Sault, Kae Tempest, Fimba Brava, and Wild Beasts as big sources of inspiration for the new album. Speaking on Kae Tempest’s influence, and their two songs “More Pressure” and “Grace”, he noted “Kae performed these two tracks back to back on Jimmy Fallen a few months ago and I’m still electrified. The truth they speak…! It’s wild and it just pierces more, somehow”. 

Going on to note the grandfather of ambiences influence he also said “(Brian) Eno gets it. Says me and every other artist / person, I know, but… he does. He is an inspiration in these times not only for all his culture shaping creations and ideas over the decades but because he is acting with the appropriate urgency these times are demanding. He is awake”.

Honesty seems to be the running theme here and is a sentiment reflected in much of Nick’s music. New Mythology can be seen as an exploration of family, character, and connection, and a deeply personal one at that, pushing Mulvey’s reputation as one of the UK’s most consistent songwriters to new heights.
