It has been announced today that start up company You Check will be working with the Music Venue Trust to trail their Health Passport app with audiences in London and Bristol. According to Event Industry News, ‘the 100 Club in London and Bristol’s 250 capacity Exchange,’ or currently scheduled to be hosting the first events which use the new system. The app, which was originally created as a ticket ID system which would prevent ticket touts reselling tickets purchased in bulk for a profit by matching a photograph of the buyer to the ticket.

The app has now been adapted to include the functionality to work in combination with the government’s NHS Covid-19 app which is used to notify members of the public of their results after taking a coronavirus test, as well as informing them when they have been in contact with someone who has tested positive. What this means for concert goers and venue owners is that they may now have a system by which ticket buyers can verify their identity, proof of purchase, and show evidence of a negative covid-19 test taken within the last 48 hours and be granted access to a show which, as a result of this, should only contain people who have proved themselves to be free of the virus.

The news of these trials brings a great deal of hope to music fans across the country who saw 2020 quickly become a barren, live music free wasteland due to the coronavirus outbreak. While large events like Glastonbury have sadly now been cancelled and arena tours may look to be going the same way, this app may bring some hope for smaller venues who can use the system to ensure a small, safe covid-free gathering can occur and live music can safely begin to return. 100-200 capacity venues exist all across the UK and if these trials show that they can safely be reopened, this could mean a huge boost for the UK live music industry which has suffered so greatly throughout this pandemic.

It would be a relief too, if this news were to benefit especially these smaller venues who may not have the financial reserves of big arena owners like O2 to be able to safely keep their doors closed without running completely out of money. It is unclear yet what this will mean for the UK artists who planned to tour in 2021 but may have started to rethink their plans. Dua Lipa for example, whose tour will require large arena’s to house all of her loyal fans, may need to wait until a later date when the vaccine program has been completely rolled out and coronavirus effectively eradicated from the UK before her concerts become completely safe. Smaller artists, however, might find that they are able to begin performing shows again a little sooner than they thought.

London’s iconic The 100 Club was forced to postpone all planned December gigs with the capital moving into Tier 3 from Wednesday 16 December. The announcement came yesterday after Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed that London should tighten all safety measures to respond to the rapid rise of positive COVID-19 cases following the end of the second nation-wide lockdown from November. Taking it to social media, the renowned central London venue used the opportunity to thank everyone that has supported the club recently, and issued the following statement:

“Our thanks goes to everyone who has bought tickets, supporting the 100 Club and it’s staff. The few shows we have been able to put on in December have been a rare ray of relief for us all. For existing ticket holders, you will be notified when re-scheduled dates are confirmed. If you would like to be refunded, please contact your ticket provider.” (WeGotTickets)

Following the updated Government guidelines, Tier 3 stands for Very High Alert and specifies that “hospitality settings, such as bars (including shisha bars), pubs, cafes, restaurants, and social clubs must close except for takeaway, delivery and click and collect services“. For venues like The 100 Club, this means immediate cancelation of all festive events planned for the foreseeable future. Many local pubs and small entertainment venues tried to return to their planned calendar runs after London resumed its normal life at the beginning of December, but saw those plans put into hold after positive testing peaked yet again in the capital and Wednesday marked the return to another period of tighter measures.

For December, The 100 Club had a busy month planned ahead, trying to end 2020 on a high note. The cancelled events are R&B band Moa Moa (16 & 18 Dec), singer-songwriter Billy Locket (17 Dec), and the ‘Absolute Bowie’ tribute show (19 Dec), with all rescheduled dates to be confirmed. The tribute to the punk veterans The Cramps and gothic legends Bauhaus by Teenage Warewolves, She’s In Bauhaus and Kitten Deville has been moved to 13 June 2021. Moreover, the upcoming gig by Chantel McGregor and Erja Lyytinen has been moved all the way to 4 February 2022.

In order to adapt to the changing times, The 100 Club opened as a regular bar for the first time last Monday 14 December. For just £2 visitors were able to book a table and enjoy a drink without the need of a substantial meal and enjoying music by Dj Never Heard Of Ya. The miracle did not last long with the club now forced to close in light of Tier 3 guidelines. However, next month The 100 Club are set to pilot a brand new Pathogen Reduction System supported by the Musc Venue Trust. The invention is set to clear 99% of the infectious airbourne pathogens, including coronavirus.

Despite having to shut for the foreseeable as London is now placed in Tier 3, we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be trialling the Pathogen Reduction System (PRS) next month in addition to a new “Test Clean Prevent” (TCP) system along with @musicvenuetrust. pic.twitter.com/jqy8RJVETl — The 100 Club (@100clubLondon) December 16, 2020

Located at 100 Oxford Street at the very heart of London, the iconic music venue was opened in 1942 and has been operating as the beating heart of the capital’s punk rock scene ever since. The club used to offer its stage to the likes of the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, The Stranglers and The Damned, and has remained a bastion of quality live music with more recent memorable performances by Alice Cooper, Shame, The Specials, Idles and Sleaford Mods.

The 100 Club is set to return to scheduled live events on 8th and 9th February 2021 with their Resolution 2021 punk festival events featuring The Vibrators and TV Smith.

Supergroup The Jaded Hearts Club have released another superb single, a cover of ‘Love’s Gone Bad’, in advance of their debut album You’ve Always Been Here, coming on October 2. This joins a string of great Northern Soul covers, which we can expect from the upcoming album.

Supergroup is absolutely the right term for the combined talent of Miles Kane (The Last Shadow Puppets) and Nic Cester (Jet) as joint frontmen, Graham Coxon (Blur) and Jamie Davis playing guitar, Matt Bellamy (Muse) on bass and Sean Payne (the Zutons) as the drummer. Sometimes Abi Harding (The Zutons) joins them on the saxophone. Musically, they are as fantastic as you’d hope – Kane and Cester have different but extremely powerful voices, and the rest of the band make their instruments look and sound like a natural extension of themselves.

Currently, we’ve only seen the group publish covers – mainly incredible, stripped back, guitar-based versions of Northern soul classics. There is rumour of original music, and they play all sorts at their infamous live shows, but it doesn’t look like any of this will feature on their debut album. For now, having the band re-invigorate Northern soul classics is more than good enough! The singles they’ve released in 2020 include versions of ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ (July), ‘This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It’s Killing Me)’ (April) and short little version of ‘We’ll Meet Again’, sung by Matt Bellamy.

Regarding their newest track, Kane called it: “‘Love’s Gone Bad’, a rare northern soul stomper that we dug from the underground. We beefed it up and gave it golden wings with matching loafers! Be prepared to dance!”

The video is so cool – it’s all in black and white, set in London’s Moth Club, and Matt Bellamy is wearing heart-shaped sunglasses. It’ll have you dancing, spinning, and probably online shopping for loafers and corduroy trousers. Mainly it’s Kane dancing with a partner. The other band members do show up though, playing their instruments while Kane and his partner leap about, spectacularly in time with each other. Although, of course, The Jaded Hearts Club offer a rock-based take on Northern soul, the video is very much in the spirit of the 1960s dancehalls where the genre really took off.

The group formed in 2017. According to Rough Trade, Davis wanted a Beatles band to play for his birthday, and he’s quoted as saying: “I knew a bunch of 1/2 decent musician friends so I asked if they’d form an early ‘60s Beatles band. Everyone had such a good time that we decided to do it again.” In 2019 they recorded a live album at London’s iconic ‘The 100 Club’. Their website declares that they “have been described as the ultimate Beatles cover band.”

It’s not so long to wait for their album now – but you should know that the 12” version, on marble patterned vinyl, is already sold out for pre-orders! The Jaded Hearts Club are so fantastically energetic, even these three-minute videos feel like a true taste of what they’re like live. Hopefully there will be more of that to come, following the release of You’ve Always Been Here.
