21 Savage has announced a massive show at the 02 Arena in London on Thursday, November 30th 2023.
The UK-born Atlanta-based rapper announced the show via social media, showcasing childhood photos from his youth living in London, soundtracked to Skylar Grey’s “Coming Home”. The video in the post concluded with the words: “London, I’m coming home”. Drake has hinted towards making an appearance by making a comment underneath the post by simply responding: “*We’re.”

The 02 Arena show is a one-off show that isn’t a part of any specific tour for the rapper. Opening support for the show will be provided by Baby Drill and 21 Harold. The ticket pre-sale will be held on Wednesday, October 11th at 9am, whilst general presale will be open on Friday, October 13th. Tickets can be found here.

The announcement for 21 Savage’s first show follows the news that the rapper has been declared a “lawful permanent resident” of the United States and is able to freely travel around the world, including to his native United Kingdom. 21 Savage was touring for Drake’s “It’s All A Blur” tour, but was unable to join him for shows outside of the United States until very recently as a result of immigration complications dating back to 2005.

21 Savage (real name: Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph), has been fighting a four year legal battle since 2019, as he was arrested for immigrating to the United States and overstaying his Visa, having arrived in the country in 2000 when he was 7 years old. “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested unlawfully present United Kingdom national Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph AKA ‘21 Savage’ during a targeted operation with federal and local law enforcement partners early Sunday in metro Atlanta,” were the words of ICE spokesperson Brian Cox at the time of arrest, however Savage’s lawyer at the time exclaimed: “We are working diligently to get Mr Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with authorities to clear up any misunderstanding,”

The investigation concluded that Savage had immigrated from the United Kingdom to the United States from the age of 7 in 2000, but then returned to the United Kingdom for his uncle’s funeral in 2005, aged 12, without any knowledge that his visa would expire in 2006. Savage would attempt to renew his visa in 2017 after learning it was a legal requirement.

The 1975 will be playing the world’s first carbon removed event during their three nights at the 02 Arena in London next February 2024.

The 02 Arena are teaming up with carbon removal company CUR8 to explore and test options to create a ‘carbon-removed’ event, which include direct air capture, a process in which air is blown through machines that remove CO2 and store it underground.

The band will be taking part in a pilot scheme during their London shows next February, in which the organisers will use various methods to extract carbon from the show and remove said carbon from the atmosphere.

“We’re incredibly proud to be hosting the world’s first carbon-removed events here at The O2.,” says the AEG Europe Director of Sustainability, Sam Booth

“The perfect large-scale carbon-free event does not currently exist, but while the industry continues to innovate and improve to reduce emissions to their lowest possible level, carbon removals will remain an important piece of the puzzle.”

The organisers have said: “Using this data, the cost of removing the carbon associated with the events can be folded into the existing business model.”

Mark Stevenson, Co-Founder and Chief Impact Officer at CUR8 also said: “What’s great about these shows is that we can demonstrate that it is now possible to fold the cost of removing the residual CO2 into the existing business model, such that fans won’t notice any difference in the gig experience. It’s a complete win-win-win – for artists and their fans who care about the climate crisis.”

It is said that these pilot events will help create a practice model for venues across the globe in how to approach the carbon issue and to pull together the live entertainment in the same direction.

Carbon at live events is typically born from stage lights and props as well as actions from the crowd such as travel.

The band has also previously teamed up with climate change group organisation, Music Declares Emergency in 2021 via launching t-shirts and hoodies with sustainable materials that helped raise money for charity.

The band is also touring the UK and Europe in 2024, playing shows in Manchester, Birmingham, Paris and many more. Tickets can be found here

Just before Asake hit the 02 Arena stage last Sunday a tribute towards the two who lost their life was carried out as their picture was shown across the stage’s big screen. This was accompanied by a spoken word poem alongside backing performers dressed in all-white surrounded in full view by flowers.

The poet went on to say: “I know some feel loss and some regret. We need to hold this moment. I need to hold this moment. They need to hold this moment.”

Throughout the poem, the big screen cycled through photos of the two victims as well as news footage from the scene and pictures of the tributes that were left outside the venue.

This was all then rounded out with a message that read “Rest well” immediately prior to the start of the concert.

The tribute was commended and praised across social media from those who attended the show and those that chose to watch the live stream.

However, the tribute was met with criticism from the sister of victim, Rebecca Ikumelo, as she stated on social media: “My sister lost her life at your show and you haven’t spoken to a single member of my family since. But you can hold another concert in London less than nine months later and play her videos as a ‘tribute’?”

What a sorry excuse of a “tribute” from @asakemusik. My sister lost her life at your show and you haven’t spoken to a single member of my family since. But you can hold another concert in London less than 9 months later and play her videos as a “tribute”?

The show itself was still mired in speculation. Asake showed up on stage 90 minutes late with there being rumours of issues with crowd control. However, it is possible extra precaution was taken as Asake went on the state “Safety is my main priority tonight”.

Investigations are still ongoing regarding what happened during that fatal crush outside the 02 Brixton Academy last December, with the venue remaining closed as Lambeth Council reviews it’s live music license. The future of the venue is currently up in the air at the moment; the Met Police have claimed to have “lost confidence” in the venue’s safety whilst online petitions have pushed for the venue to remain open.
