Just a week ago, Sam Fender had announced his ‘Proper Massive Stadium Tour’27’ for next summer. While this was exciting news, as he had planned to kick off the tour in his hometown (Newcastle), there were issues with the ticketing site following a “sophisticated bot attack”. Presale for the Newcastle dates were supposed to open yesterday on the 28th of October; however, it was moved to this morning at 9:30 am on the 29th of October. Ticketing provider Gigantic claimed, “our system detected an unusually high volume of suspicious activity which resulted in a Gateway Error on our site. We acted immediately to protect genuine fans by stopping the pre-sale and blocking malicious traffic. Fans should be able to buy tickets fairly, and that is what we’re working to make sure happens.”
Only tickets for Newcastle, St. James’ Park were affected, while the other shows had no issues. According to the announcement, “a very limited number of fans were able to buy tickets in the original St. James’ Park presale this morning prior to the website crash- these tickets remain valid.” Those who received a confirmation email remain unaffected, and those who were unsuccessful can still use the same code to buy tickets. This comes not long after Fender’s outrage at ticket prices, stating, “It got inflated well more than I’d had in mind.” Fans were disappointed not only by the pricing, but by the separation of front and back sections with standing tickets. Fender immediately responded, “I’ve managed to get front standing tickets removed from the UK stadium tour. Whoever buys a standing ticket gets as much chance as anyone to be at the front. No more 120 quid standing tickets either.”
Devoted to his fans, Fender has made an effort to combat the controversy around ticketing prices that many artists have also had to face, whilst also fighting internet bots. Although it has been a chaotic turn of events, both Sam Fender and Gigantic guarantee equal opportunity for fans to get fairly priced tickets. Fans can now rest assured and look forward to attending the highly anticipated show as general sale will kick off tomorrow on the 30th of October.
