BBC Earth’s nature documentary, Blue Planet III, will be heading on the road next year, bringing a live orchestral concert to select UK cities. Featuring music from composer Hans Zimmer, the show will be an immersive experience of the six-part television series.
The series is set to premiere on BBC and iPlayer this autumn, and will be narrated by David Attenborough, exploring natural life in our oceans. He says, “We will uncover life that is more surprising, more intelligent, and even more precious than we ever realised.” And that Blue Planet III will “venture even further” than before. See a sneak peak of the series’ visuals shown in London’s Piccadilly Circus below.
The series took an expansive four years to film and will be released 25 years after the first Blue Planet series premiered in 2001. Attenborough, who narrated the first two iterations of the iconic documentary, was announced as the Blue Planet III narrator on his 100th birthday. He said of it, “When I narrated the first Blue Planet series, it didn’t occur to me that I would be narrating a third series in my centennial year.”
Next May, the series’ experience will be taken directly to fans across the UK. Hosted by Executive Producer Elizabeth White, the Blue Planet III Tour will feature White’s behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the documentary as well as curated footage from the series, playing on massive 200sq meter Ultra HD LED screens on stage. All of this will be underscored by Zimmer’s soundtrack, played live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
The show will stop in major UK cities, starting off in Manchester at the AO Arena. It will then head to the Bp Pulse Live in Birmingham, before arriving in Glasgow for a night at the OVO Hydro. A London date for the tour has yet to be confirmed, but there is one on the way. Fans can sign up to be notified of the London date, as soon as it is announced, here.
White said, “Making Blue Planet III has taken us to places we never imagined we’d film. But there’s something about bringing that footage into a concert arena full of people, with the score performed live all around you, that will be truly special. This tour is our chance to share the series on a completely different scale, and I can’t wait to be there live, revealing the extraordinary stories behind what audiences are seeing on screen.”
Zimmer said “there’s nothing like” experiencing his score, played live, “especially when it’s paired with the extraordinary visuals of the life underwater.” He said he is “ecstatic that audiences will be able to enjoy our score in this way.”
Earlier this month, Jade Thirwall (going by artist name JADE), collaborated with Zimmer on an official song for the series, ‘Into the Deep (Seas Cry)’. JADE called the experience “one of the best things” she’s ever done. And when she was offered the opportunity she “might have shed a little tear” as she is a “huge” Attenborough fan.
Tickets for the Blue Planet III Tour will go on pre-sale Wednesday October 14. And general sale will commence from Friday October 16. More information can be found here.
