Earlier last year, Death Blooms announced they signed for the independent label Adventure Cat, a division of KMGMT who have been involved with the likes of Neck Deep, Tonight Alive, Creeper, As It Is, and many more. Following the news, the Liverpool dropped the furious tirade ‘Life Is Pain‘, with frontman Paul Barrow talking about the track: “This song, as with many of our songs, looks at the daily struggle. We, as a species, experience many things: pain is something we all know only too well”. 

Back then Death Blooms hinted at a debut full-lenght album on the pipeline but with the chaos and delays of 2020, an album is currently expected later this year, hoping for an official announcement soon. In August 2020, the band dropped the second promotional single ‘Anger‘, building on the momentum and making a clear statement with their raging blend of nostalgic early nu-metal mayhem and modern post-hardcore charge. Steadily making a name as one of the most exciting rising UK bands, Death Blooms recently got the attention of Radio 1 and MTV Rocks’ very own Jack Saunders:

“They’re another spawn of Slipknot, without a doubt. Seeing a post-hardcore band in a small venue, the sound needs to be really abrasive yet coherent and engaging at the same time, and they absolutely smashed it. Their lead singer’s voice is unreal, too – they’ve got the whole package. It’s early days with them, but there’s potential for them to break through. I’m a big fan.”

Since their formation not too long ago, Death Blooms have dropped two self-produced 4-track EPs – Death Blooms (2017) and You Are Filth (2019), before signing to Adventure Cat and building a solid foundation for a hugely awaited debut album. Undoubtedly a band to keep an eye for, and one with magnetic stage presence, it would have been an even bigger year for the Liverpool outfit if it wasn’t for the ongoing government restriction on live event.

Back in November, as we were slowly adapting to the new world of online gigging, Knotfest started their new Pulse Of The Maggots virtual festival delivering the most promising acts from across the globe and rightfuly including Death Blooms. Making the absolute most of their 20-minute “festival” slot, the post-hardcore outfit delivered a memorable mini set, boldly standing out from the crowd with their performances of ‘Life Is Pain‘, ‘Sick‘, ‘Filth‘, ‘Crosses‘ and ‘Anger‘, available to catch up here.

Despite the chaos surrounding pre-Christmas tier systems, curfews and constantly changing guidelines, Death Blooms managed to sneak a few socially distanced shows in London’s New Cross In supporting Wargasm UK and reminding us once again how much we all miss live gigs. The imaginative video sees Birdy by herself in isolation, losing sense of time in an endless loop of clever footage played backwards. The talented singer-songwriter added the following message on her social on the premiere day: “This video was so special to create, we had the idea of making it in reverse which meant learning and performing the song backwards“. Since uploading yesterday, the video has already been played over 100,000 times, with 15,000 likes and rising, and is available to watch here.

‘Loneliness‘ takes a bold and mature step away from Birdy’s previous record Beautiful Lies (2016). Following a five year hiatus, the young artist is preparing the release of her new album that is a lot more personal and intimate, stripping back the big production and theatrical feel of its predecessor. Without losing those signature emotive melodies and atmospheric compositions, Young Heart is shaping to reflect a natural growth in both music and herself, with strong focus on personal experience and deeper emotions. 

Birdy talks about the new single: “I’m really excited to share ‘Loneliness’ from my new album Young Heart. When I wrote the song there were two characters in my head, a mischievous one and another who’s being led astray. It’s not so much about leaving someone but more of a love song to Loneliness.”  The track is co-written with the prolific Jamie Scott, having previously worked with the likes of Rag’n’Bone Man, One Direction, Rudimental, Justin Bieber, Jess Glynne, and many more. ‘Loneliness‘ is produced by James Ford of The Last Shadow Puppets, knows for his production work for Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Gorillaz, Florence and the Machine, and Depeche Mode.

Young Heart is Birdy’s fourth studio album, coming out ten year since her double platinum self-titled debut from 2011. Since then, the now 24-year old indie singer-songwriter released the Top 10 records Fire Within (2014) and Beautiful Lies (2016) before going on a prolonged break, spent in travel and seeking new inspirations.

Last November, the acclaimed singer came back with the EP Piano Sketches, a beautiful collection of four intimate pieces, before starting the promotional cycle for her upcoming record. Concise and straight to the point, Our Hell Is Right Here lasts just over 40 minutes and features a total of 13 tracks that aims to bring engaging punk rock back from the shadows. The record includes the previously released singles ‘Josephine‘, title ‘Our Hell Is Right Here’, ‘Epitaph‘, ‘Learn‘ and most recent ‘Live & Let Live‘. The rest of the tracks add a much needed depth and variety quite often lacking in records of that genre, ranging from the gentle acoustic ‘Learn‘ through the monumental atmosphere in ‘VOID‘ all the way to the blistering ‘Lost In Translation‘.

Talking about tackling their second album tackling the sour state of the world while being fuelled by personal issues, talented singer Lois McDougall says: “I’m learning that personal care and self-worth is not something to be diminished. There are songs on this album that I had to write for my own therapy. Whilst writing this record, I went through a divorce, lost a family member and was battling with my own mental health. At the same time, it felt like the world was falling apart. ‘Our Hell Is Right Here’ is the product of my experiences over the past few months. There’s a lot of sadness on this record, but I can now look back and celebrate who I have become in spite of it all.”

A true DIY story, Our Hell Is Right Here is entirely self-produced, mastered, mixed and engineered by Drones’ guitarist Tim Kramer at Signal House Studios. Other professionals involved in making the record come true include the teams of Lockjaw Records and Thousand Islands, Major Press and Earshot Media, Merit-Based Booking Management, as well as Tim Deal, Kazz Stanley and Ren Aldridge from Petrol Girls, featuring on the intense title single.

Kramer reflects on the turbulent recording process: “We finished writing the record in January, but it’s been an usually long process due to all the twists and turns that 2020 has thrown at us! We’ve been spread apart all over the country, but there’s also been a national lockdown and we lost a guitarist at the tail-end of the process. There were never more than two of us in a room at any given stage of making this album but it doesn’t feel disjointed at all – in fact, in the face of adversity, it’s our fullest sounding record yet.” Order Drones’ ambitious debut Our Hell Is Right Here from their official Bandcamp or via Lockjaw Records.

The official tracklist officially confirms the rumours of vocal collaborations with Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro on the song ‘Nervous‘ as well as Deryck Whibley from Canadian punk rock veterans Sum 41 for ‘No Defeat For The Brave‘. Alongside the already released ‘Sleeps Society‘ and recent banger ‘You Are All You Need‘, the album will include the track ‘Call Of The Void‘ revealed to feature members of the Sleeps Society, teasing involvement from While She Sleeps’ hardcore fan base.

The band revealed the second promo single ‘You Are All You Need‘ last Sunday during Daniel P. Carter’s ‘Rock Show‘ on BBC1. An undeniable masters of their craft and confidently moving to a league of their own, While She Sleeps deliver some of the most exciting arrangement and guitar work in modern metal, backed by rich bass sections, restless drums and singer Loz Taylor’s versatile vocal performance. Lead guitarist Sean Long talks about their new single and video, giving some insight on the direction of their explosive recent track and video:

“We are always trying to express a certain kind of emotion or internal insight and sometimes you really hit the nail on the head, expressing it how you imagined, and other times you miss it completely. Well, this time we hit it dead on with no room for speculation. The song says it how it is and reminds us to stop looking outwards for approval & validation. The video is a colour explosion from start to finish and, with the current state of this dull bleak world, we think it’s going to be the colour everyone needs to illuminate their spirits, even if it’s only for three minutes.”

While She Sleeps shared the psychedelic video for ‘You Are All You Need‘ at 6pm on Monday with a premiere that coincided with Architects’ latest track ‘Meteor‘ reveal on BBC Radio 1 and immediately sent ripples across the music media. In a seemingly coincidental yet powerfully unified action at both fronts, for a brief moment all eyes and ears were focused on two of the leading contemporary metal exports from the country, continuing the recently reinvigorated surge across the entire scene.

2021 is already shaping to be a truly exciting time for modern metal fans and professionals across the UK, making the most of these troubled times. With established bands morphing into genre-defining global heavyweights and talented new acts confidently rising to fill the ranks, main albums charts are increasingly seeing more guitar-driven and louder music across the spots. Only recently Bring Me The Horizon confidently grabbed the top spot with the physical release of their seminal EP Post Human: Survival Horror, while Enter Shikari and Bury Tomorrow seamlessly broke into Top 10 in 2020, just to name a few without pinpointing specific genres.

Building on the momentum with the likes of While She Sleeps and Architects demanding the attention of primetime national radio shows and making press headlines with their highly anticipated new albums Sleeps Society and For Those That Wish To Exist, now is as exciting time as any to follow the new trends. Curiously, Biffy Clyro’s frontman Simon Neil is set to feature on both bands’ upcoming records, further expanding their shared creative field and strengthening the guitar-focused community across the country.

The day after the premiere saw all major media outlets worldwide set their eyes on Architects, giving them the attention they rightfuly deserve and once again opening the debate over their new musical direction. Slowly molding into an unstoppable force breaking genre restrictions on their own terms, the established metalcore heavyweights are preparing a project brimming with newly found purpose, creative freedom and environmental awareness. Putting aside any paralels to their contemporaries from the UK metal scene, the Brighton flagmen stand proud with the confidence and attitude of a festival headliner ready to lead the pack.

At first glance, ‘Meteor‘ fails to hit as heavy as its title suggests but frankly it doesn’t need to anymore. With nothing more to prove and noone left to please but themselves, the band delivers yet another seminal track that sounds melodic and radio-friendly in its alt rock core, all the while fuelled with all the menacing vibe and dark themes defining any acclaimed metal record. Melodies and lyrics intertwined in a catchy yet troubled requiem for a paradise lost, the single follows Carter desperately crying out loud: “They said we pushed the last domino before the apocalypse. We’ve all got a stone to throw. Why? I will never know, yeah, we’re like fire in the snow“.

Naturally, ‘Meteor‘ won’t please everyone but serves a very specific purpose within the context of For All That Wish To Exist as a significant ninth record by a band blessed by immediate international success but also deeply scarred by personal tragedy. Last year, drummer and producer Dan Searle joined Carter for an exclusive feature for Kerrang!, providing an insight on their inspiration and direction:

“I think Holy Hell still had that Architects sound, but alluded to where we could go next. Holy Hell took us into arenas, and playing live in those spaces taught us a lot. We felt like we were able to go where we wanted, without losing sight of ourselves. After nine albums, you have to go somewhere a little different, a little uncomfortable, and that’s where creativity flies.”

In a curious video interview for Rock Sound from yesterday, Mike Kerr from Royal Blood talked about collaborating with Architects on the track ‘Little Wonders‘ from their upcoming record. A fellow Brighton rocker and long-term friend of Sam Carter and the band, the guitarist discussed seeing them perform life, recording music together and being completely blown by their craft: “It’s like watching a bunch of ninjas. They’re masters of their art“.

At the beginning of the year, SharpTone Record shared a post teasing all acts from their roster with new music in preparation for 2021, including Loathe much to the surprise of fans and critics still hooked on their previous release. Two weeks ago, the band announced the surprise release of The Thins They Believe and confirmed the involvement of saxophonist John Waugh (1975), guitarist Peter Vybiral (Parting Gift), and Vincent Weight in the ambitious upcoming project.

As a surprising yet appropriate continuation of the critically acclaimed  I Let It In And It Took Everything and the unusually disruptive year that followed its premiere, The Things They Believe offers a musical retreat from reality. Stripping Loathe’s previous record down to its sonic nucleus, it seemlessly expands its themes and forms a beautiful instrumental soundtrack of the troubled times we live in. The Liverpool quintet shared their latest project with the following message:

“The concept for ‘The Things They Believe’ was born from the incredible response to ‘I Let It In And It Took Everything’, which became the impetus to extend the identity and timeline of the record. Creating sonic landscapes and parallels that explore and expand further on the areas within ‘I Let It In And It Took Everything’. As we release this collection of atmospheres, we hope you lose yourself further within this chapter and, much like our love for soundtracks and soundscapes provides us with solace in times of distress and need, we hope you find comfort inside too.”

The Things They Believe consists of 12 individual tracks seemlessly intertwined in one 35-minute long ambient piece evoking silent contemplation and melancholy. The instrumental album is built on ambient sonic scapes mixed with real recordings of gentle rain and chirruping birds, occasionally backed with soulflul saxophone. The record is currenty available only as a digital release across all streaming platforms.

In an exclusive interview for Kerrang! from earlier today, guitarist Erik Bickerstaffe, bassist Feisal El-Khazragi and singer Kadeem France discussed the inspiration and creative process behind their unusual new release and time spent in lockdown:

​“Throughout lockdown, we all experienced what can only be described as extreme personality changes or periods of self-discovery. We’ve all been quite separated from each other, with me down here in Wales, Erik in St Helens, Connor being stranded in Belgium at this point, while only Kadeem and Sean actually live in central Liverpool. We had begun to find the comfort in ambient music, meditation and that kind of stuff. We wanted to create a similar soundscape to live within the universe of Loathe and the world of I Let It In… It’s just another place that you can go.”

‘You Are All You Need‘ comes out exactly fours montsh since the premiere of the album title track ‘Sleeps Society‘ that caused quite the hype back in October 2020 with the foundation of While She Sleep’s self-sustainable Patreon membership system. With the exception of their late-2019 standalone track ‘Faker’s Plague‘, this was their first music since their previous record So What? (2019) and coming right on time towards the end of the traditional two-years album production cycle.

Subscribers of While She Sleeps’s Patreon profile were already treated to sneak peak of the new single’s lyrics as well as exclusive Behind The Song videos with Aaran McKenzie (bass), Sean Long (lead guitar), Adam ‘Sav’ Savage (drums) and Lawrence ‘Loz’ Taylor (vocals). The Sleeps Society is going strong after smashing their ambitious target within the first two weeks, and maintaining a solid folling of over 2000 paid members. Since its inception back in October 2020 the band has provided almost 200 unique posts covering video tutorials and production sessions, photoshoots, audio teasers and early access to upcoming gig tickets.

In addition, While She Sleeps launched the official Sleeps Brothers Podcast with first episode revealed on 7 December with an introduction, update on the Sleeps Society and an overview of the unusual COVID-stricken 2020 and its impact on the band and their followers. The second episode premiered last Monday 1 February, available to stream on Spotify and launched with the following message:

“Come and join us on a zoom chat all about what we’ve been up to, The impact we feel Brexit will have on the music industry and we talk about some cool surprises happening within the Sleeps Society RIGHT NOW! We also chat to one of our Patrons to answer some questions and find out Loz wanted to be a Priest when he was younger! We chat about what music we have been jammin’ this month and give some of the talented members of the Sleeps Society a shout out!“

Sleeps Society is set to be While She Sleeps’ eight music release in the last fifteenth years (counting their three EPs between 2006 and 2010), easily making them one of the most dedicated and hard-working metal acts in the UK. Ever since revealing their second studio album Brainwashed from March 2015, the Sheffield quintet have dropped new records with clockwork precision every two years, meticulously following it with You Are We from April 2017, So What? from March 2019 and now an upcoming premiere on 16 April 2021.

Although looking less and less likely with the ongoing government restrictions and endless lockdowns, While She Sleeps are still hoping to go ahead with their planned UK tour in May. The band has thirteen shows booked, starting in Glasgow on 2 May and ending in Brighton on 23 May, including three separate dates at Leeds’ The Key and another three in Camden’s Underworld. The promo campaign kickstarted with ‘Hiding From Myself‘ back in September 2020, followed by ‘Take Me There‘ in November, ‘Stranger In The Mirror‘ in December, and ‘Wallow‘ in January. Since last September each of the five promotional singles has revealed a different aspect of the rising band’s versatile approach to contemporary metal. As far as conventional metalcore goes, As Everything Unfolds tick all the boxes yet succeed in clearly defining their unique place in the scene. Their music swings between heavy breakdown-led post-hardcore to riffy alternative rock, with singer Charlie Rolfe’s distinctive vocals jumping from emotive singing to fierce growls.

‘Greyscale‘ revolves around a basic structure with clearly defined stripped-down verses and repeated atmospheric chorus, further showcasing Rolfe’s vocal range. Around the third minute mark, the anticipated breakdown hits with full force delivering the fitting climax the track needs, and leaving listeners wanting more. The single was produced, recorded and mixed by Oz Craggs at Hidden Track Studios boasting clients such as Mallory Knox, Neck Deep and Palm Reader, and mastered by Nick Burchall at Audio Animals. The artwork for the single and the upcoming record is credited to Abby Coulson of Flowers & Bones.

The new single is already drawing the deserved media attention with critics and fans alike praising the fresh approach and new face of As Everything Unfolds on display culminating with Alex Baker from Kerrang! selecting the High Wycombe newcomers as ones to follow: “Setting aside their obvious talent and the cinematic hugeness of their sound for a moment, at the core of the forthcoming success of this band is a simple truth: they write bloody great songs.”

As Everything Unfolds’ debut record Within Each Lies The Other comes out on 26 March 2021 via Long Breach Records on standard CD and LP. The album will feature a total of 11 tracks, including the five already released promotional singles. Various bundles and exclusive T-Shirts are still available on the official label’s store. Singer Charlie Rolfe previously said the following regarding the inspiration and themes in Within Each Lies The Other:

“This album represents the very best and worst of ourselves. Our sadness, our vengeance but in balance also our happiness and self discovery. We cannot always be the best version of ourselves, we must travel through the pain and anguish to develop our best self, a you that has learned. This album focuses on the concept that which is above, also is the same of what is below, balance the pain and happiness, centre yourself and learn from it.”

The band issued the following statement on their social media channels yesterday: “We are extremely excited to partner with Nuclear Blast worldwide for the forthcoming release of our second album. Having spent the last year or so getting to know Monte Conner, we count ourselves lucky to be working with not only a true legend in the world of heavy music, but one who continues to champion exciting, forward-thinking art.”

Following the overwhelmingly positive reception of their debut 4-track EP I (2016) and its follow-up Mire, Conjurer had a busy 2019 releasing the brilliant collaborative project Curse These Metal Hands with Pijn and a cover split with Palm Reader. In September 2020 their previous independent label Holy Roar Records was hit by mass allegations against its owner, with certain staff members and leading acts like Rolo Tomasi, Svalbard and Apologies, I Have None all leaving amidst the public scandal. As a result, Conjurer were amongst the bands that respectfully cut all ties with the company with no further comment, and focused on their future.

Yesterday’s band statement confirmed the extreme outfit have been working with industry titan Monte Connor in preparation for their hugely anticipated second album. Previously from Roadrunner Records, Connor joined Nuclear Blast in 2012 and boosts an impressive portfolio, with the likes of Slipknot, Trivium and King Diamond worth mentioning standing out from the the endless list of hugely influential metal acts. His recent partnership with Conjurer pushed the promising young act into joining the international division of Nuclear Blast, adding:

“We’ve now also been introduced to Barley and the rest of the international team at NB and it’s evident that they understand our mentality and want nothing more than to support and nourish our creativity. In what has been an awful year on so many levels, we are grateful to have found the right home for our music. We look forward to working together with NB to bring you our sophomore album in 2021, and much more in the years to follow.”

With the exciting announcement of the new record deal with Nuclear Blast out of the way, Conjurer can direct all their energy into preparing the release of their second album. Official title, artwork and tracklist are yet to be confirmed but stay tuned for further updates and upcoming promotional singles. As Nuclear Blast have already added to their updated artists roster page, “the future of British metal lies in safe hands with Conjurer, who continue their journey as the country’s most exciting young metal band with their signing“.

So far, the Rugby quartet have three festival appearances booked for Summer 2021. On 30 July Conjurer will perform on Radar Festival alongside Dirty Loops, Sleep Token and Palm Reader, followed by 14 August for the second day of the huge Bloodstock Open Air, supporting Mercyful Fate, Dimmu Borgir, Paradise Lost, Bury Tomorrow, and more. Conjurer are also set to feature on the 2021 edition of the more prog and experimental-focused ArcTanGent Festival, bringing their Curse These Metal Hands collaboration with Pijn on Friday 20 August.

Continuing their strong partnership with the mighty Easy Star Records and having a helping hand from Gardna and Hollie Cook is only ever going to have one outcome, and they would like to invite every single one of you to join them.”

Down To Earth come out in March on standard CD and LP, as well as a limited edition green/bone coloured vinyl in addition to an exclusive long-sleeve t-shirt and deluxe album bundle, all available through their website. So far it is confirmed that the imaginative artwork of the upcoming record, as well as their two promotional singles, has been done by the extremely talented Charlotte Smith of Artworks By Blondie, whose portfolio showcases previous work for the likes of Don Broco, Gabrielle Aplin, Walking On Cars, and many others. All official photoshoots are creditted to Riya Hollings.

The upcoming album is mixed and mastered by the well established producer Brad Ellis, best known in the industry as Brad Baloo. Down To Earth will cover a total of 10 tracks, featuring the previously released ‘Castles In The Sky‘ and Gentleman’s Dub Club latest collaboration with Hollie Cook for ‘Honey‘. The official tracklist also reveals an exciting team-up with the Bristol MC Gardna, who appeared on the 2018 single ‘Rudeboy‘ alongside The Nextmen.

On their future release, the energetic London-based dub gang said: “The writing of Down To Earth coincided with a time not only of international existential crisis, but also of our own personal realization that the future for live music – the main platform and ultimately life force of GDC – was up in the air.  We decided that Down To Earth should be a snapshot of that point in time, where everyone was able (for better or worse) to reflect on their role in the world around them and consider the past, present and future inside the vacuum of lockdown. While it’s a deeply personal album, the themes and sentiments on the album are universal, and point towards a future that values love and understanding over conflict and hate.”
