English music mogul and TV personality Simon Cowell has been hospitalised after breaking his back after falling from his bike at his home in Malibu. A spokesperson for Cowell said he underwent surgery last night and is said to be fine. We are not yet sure on how it will affect the first live show of America’s Got Talent on the 11th of August.

Luckily the break does not seem to be that bad as the spokesperson went on to also say “He’s doing fine, he’s under observation and he’s in the best possible hands.” This should be very encouraging for his fans whose worries have been answered with this. Unfortunately, it does seem as if Simon could miss the first live performance of America’s Got Talent if he is not 100% when Tuesday comes around.

Today is a very special day.
I was lucky enough to meet five guys. Who were so much fun. So talented. It feels like 10 minutes ago. And you made it happen. pic.twitter.com/zuPhXaz3qt

— Simon Cowell (@SimonCowell) July 23, 2020

He is most well known for creating and being a judge on TV shows such as American Idol, The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent which has amassed him a large following of fans worldwide. Cowell also owns Syco, which is his own record label that he signed various winners from X Factor on to. His most popular creation he found through one of these shows was One Direction who shot to superstardom and then split up to have differing success in their solo careers.

Being a prominent figure throughout the years for his direct attitude and straight speaking persona, he has featured on multiple other TV shows and has become a star in his own right. He has in fact become so important in the entertainment world that he was featured in Time’s top 100 most influential people in the world twice in 2004 and 2010.

Seeing how important Cowell has become to the English, and arguably, the world’s entertainment industry it is clear to see how much different it will be without him. Without him, there would not have been any ‘Got Talent’ shows which have provided us with a lot of entertainment over the years, as well as the next generation of artists. He is not only a TV and music manager; he is groundbreaking in his own way.

Other songs she covered over the last few weeks include SZA and Bjork. It is quite fitting that she would pick such a beautiful song to finish off them with.

In a post on her Instagram, she explains how Radiohead had inspired her and how much of an influence they have had on her career. She says “in admiration of one of the best bands of all time”, I think this tells you what she thinks of the influential English band. She should not worry about covering them though, as she has shown on the video just how good she is and executed her cover perfectly.

Williams is just coming off the back of her debut solo album which managed to secure her a top 5 album in the UK charts. The immediate success of her album will hopefully convince her it is enough to continue making solo music and push forward in the future. Being her first album away from Paramore as well makes it even more impressive.

Her last effort with Paramore came in 2017 which saw the release of ‘After Laughter’ which was met with very strong critical praise. Hopefully we get to listen to a new album sometime soon as fans are very interested in seeing what way the band goes in after they made a change in sound on it.

Williams has, in recent years, taken a break from working on her pop-rock band, Paramore, allowing her to explore other areas of her creativity. Similarly, other artists to have done this in history include Serge from Kasabian with SLP, Alex Turner with The Last Shadow Puppets and Matt Bellamy with The Jaded Hearts Club Band. This can give them a different challenge, allow them to try something new, and give them a fresh outlook on their main project is always good to have.

Hopefully though, we do get something from the Paramore camp as ‘After Hours’ has only served to whet the appetite for more music from the band. It being that good was not wholly expected but it was wholly appreciated. But, for now, go listen to her cover as that will do more than enough for you.

Cast your mind back 4 years ago way back to January 2016. We would have just received ‘Blackstar’ which, unbeknownst to us, would end up being David Bowie’s final album. Two short days later, we would hear that he had died after a long fight with liver cancer and the tone and lyrics in the album would make sense. But, luckily for us, there are still new bits of music to be found in Bowie’s extensive back catalogue.

One of these such things is the live gig from 1999 that is going to be released digitally for the first time. ‘Something in the Air’ was recorded on October the 14th at Elysee Montmatre in Paris. It will have 15 new songs on it (12 of which being previously unreleased) which will be enough to excite any die hard Bowie fan. Something that made this gig extra special was the fact that Bowie received France’s highest Artistic Order just before. So it did not put much pressure on him to have a good gig did it?

Parlophone has announced the 3rd in a series of 3 digital live releases from the 90s. DAVID BOWIE SOMETHING IN THE AIR (LIVE PARIS 99) is available to stream from 14th August. DRIVE-IN SATURDAY available 7th August: https://t.co/3UnDIjPHjd Read PR here: https://t.co/cxEUzOlEuspic.twitter.com/qvEfAHaYKh

This new release comes shortly after his other live album ‘LiveAndWell.com’ was released back in May. This one was a special album due to it being released on the now defunct BowieNet which was his own internet service provider which closed down in 2006.

His estate are now releasing live gigs from the nineties that have not seen the light of day or just have a little dust collecting on them from all the years they have spent on the shelf. The one previous to this one was ‘Ouvrez le chien’ (Open the dog?) which again was recorded in Paris.

Seeing as though Bowie went through so many stylistic changes throughout the years, it comes as no surprise that he has so much unreleased material. To have the career he had and try all the things he tried on the music side, it shows that he has tried to get the most out of his talents and, it would usually, come off.

So hopefully this album lives up to the standards he set for himself both during his career and posthumously. There will honestly never be another artist like David Bowie so we should take advantage of all we can while we can. I am sure this will be another top album.

Ahead of his new album being released later this month, the young singer/songwriter has taken to Twitter to announce the new single off his sophomore effort. ‘Be An Astronaut‘ is set to be premiered on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show at 5pm tonight. It will then be available to stream half an hour later.

This new track will be the fourth single to come from the album and, if the others are anything to go by, it will be top quality. In a perfect world, we would have already had his new album as it was meant to come out in May but it was postponed due to coronavirus. But now it is only 16 days away and I am as excited as ever to hear it.

More music soon come. ‘Be An Astronaut’ will be available everywhere tomorrow at 5.30pm BST / 12.30PM EST / 9.30AM PT, hear it first on @beats1 with @zanelowe. Buzzing! You can listen live over here from 5pm BST tomorrow where I’ll be chatting to Zane-> https://t.co/Nrt9ZX0Tx8pic.twitter.com/jinjkPvrQr

Initially McKenna came to prominence after winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and then released his single ‘Brazil’ shortly after. This amazed audiences and shot him to the public eye at just the age of 16. They were impressed with the topical feel of his writing and the soundscape he was able to craft blending indie and pop seamlessly into one.

To think that Declan McKenna is still only 21 years old amazes me sometimes. So far, in his career, he has shown that he has so much talent and is much smarter beyond his years that you would be forgiven in thinking he was mid way through his career. But, no, he is still only 21 and has so many years ahead of him.

He has hinted at this album taking a different tone to his debut one and, so far, it still sounds as good as his first. Not departing fully from his signature sound but bringing enough of a change in has worked wonders and has freshened his sound up fully. So hopefully we see this album hit the heights that his previous release got to.

Hopefully he does get to tour fully after the release of this album as he deserves it. Having the release halted by the sudden outbreak of coronavirus must have taken the wind completely out of his sails. Given the fact that he is so young, he deserves to get the reward from putting all the effort into it to not be able to tour after it. But, he does have plenty more albums in him all of the highest quality it seems.

As if we did not think 2020 could get any weirder, Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil revealed that he once tried to enter the famous song contest. Not quite the two things I would have put together, but I am sure that he would have done amazingly regardless. At least it would have been entertaining.

Though he did not try to enter with his main band Biffy Clyro, he looked at entering with his side project Marmaduke Duke. He has said his love for the competition came around 18 years ago when he took acid with some friends and watched the show. Now he watches it every year. I have watched Eurovision and I am not sure if Simon Neil would have fit in to the usual type of participants. The Russian singing Grannies and all.

‘Weird Leisure’ is the latest track to be taken from Biffy Clyro’s new album ‘A Celebration of Endings’ which is released on August 14th!
This comes just after his main project, Biffy Clyro, have released a new song ‘Weird Leisure’ from their forthcoming album ‘A Celebration of Endings’ which will be their ninth studio album. Which will come shortly after their last effort that only came last year.

The Scottish band was also announced to be playing at Download festival next year alongside legends KISS and System Of a Down. Which is a massive move for the band to be able to walk straight back into gigs of that calibre right after lockdown.

Having made more than a name for themselves over the years, the band show no signs of stopping at all. Although it never happened, it would have been nice to have seen Neil and his side project try their hand at Eurovision as it would have added another element to the show – not that it needs it.

But luckily, we still got to hear all of the band’s amazing music. Which, as fun as it would have been, is better than a Eurovision last place for Simon Neil. Deep down we would all like to think that they would win but the history of political voting is rife in that competition so he would not stand a chance.

Music legend and former Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne has announced that he will be doing a new monthly radio show. It will be called ‘Here Comes Everybody’. This is something that is sure to excite both fans of Talking Heads and Byrnes’ solo material as they may now get to hear exclusive news through his new format.

The show launched yesterday on the Sonos Sound System Station which can be found on the Sonos app. It can be found today on Mixcloud in its entirety. Going forward, the show will be made available to listen to on the first of every month for the foreseeable future. This is not the first time that Byrne has ventured outside of music as he has taken part in acting jobs and TED Talks for a few years now.

Later this year another one of his side projects, the Broadway show American Utopia, is set to have a film version premiere on HBO. This is set to be directed by Spike Lee which shows the quality of the work. The production is written by Byrne and features songs from his solo work and his Talking Heads days. So, again, fans of both sets of work will be able to find some enjoyment out of this.

The show toured the world off the back of his solo album of the same name, before making the transition into being a broadway show. He subsequently named his live EP of the show after a review from NME. He named it “The best live show of all time”. This is both wildly cocky and genius at the same time.

Throughout the years Byrne has shown us that to be a musician, does not mean you have to stick to that. From acting, writing, doing TED Talks, cycling and doing multiple radio shows Byrne has covered it all. This is forgetting the amount of classics that he has produced whilst in a band and out of one. He really is one of the most adaptable artists around even after all these years.

His show has been described as ‘the best live show around’, and fans are holding out hope for his radio show as well as potential live gigs once it’s been deemed safe for them. Not only does it carry this mantle but it also is being directed by another unique character in Spike Lee which ensures the quality of the production will be taken to another level with the top class director at the helm.

Only last month the Government announced plans for live gigs to make a return on August 1st. But now, the government has done a 180 degree turn and has gone back to say they are now postponing the return of live music performances. This comes after there has been an increase in coronavirus cases over the past month so Prime Minister Boris Johnson has reversed his decision to re-open music venues.

Below is Frank Turner’s blog post about his own socially distanced gig, in which he concluded, “This is not the start of a series of shows like this – that’d bankrupt everyone involved.” He did, on the other hand, continue, “But it was, as I say, a gesture of cooperation, an attempt to feel out the situation with an eye to taking steps in a better direction.” Turner admitted that he had really missed playing live to an audience, and said that “It turns out, live music really, really matters.”

With the new rules that come into force on the 8th of August, it seems as though face masks would be enforced if the venues were to open anyway. This would be in the best interests of all those involved in the opening.

It may seem to some as though this is a slight step back but it is a necessary one. From the trials that have taken place, it does seem as though the socially distanced gigs have not quite gone the way they would have hoped them to. Frank Turner recently held a live, socially distanced gig at the Clapham Grand, which was marked as a failure by venue manager Ally Wolf. “It can’t be the future for live music, it can’t be the future for venues”, he said.

Recently, there has been a rise in live-streamed gigs. This could mark the future for gigs during lockdown as they have gone down a treat with those who have taken part in them. This will at least give fans something to watch and venues and artists money coming in.

The supergroup consists of Matt Bellamy, Miles Kane, Nic Cester, Graham Coxon, Sean Payne, Jamie Davis and even Paul McCartney sporadically. These names alone prove that the band should be seen as one of the most dominant forces in the rock genre. But with the group in its infancy, you can not expect them to do too much considering they have only released three singles so far.

With news that they have their debut album coming later this year, fans of the band (or maybe just fans of the members individual bands) will have something to look forward to. Going off the quality of their previous releases it will be one to look out for. You could guess it could be a good album going off the quality of the members track record. There is plenty enough quality there to get even the most stoic of people excited.

In their most recent release, they have covered two songs by both Dame Vera Lynn and The Four Tops respectively. Quite surprisingly Matt Bellamy does a good job of taking the lead vocals on the wartime classic. The video has a very retro feel with it all being shot in black and white. This goes with the feel the bandit trying to create considering they initially formed to play Beatles covers. It also shows all the members of the band playing their instruments over video call. It was released on the 31st of July and currently sits on 42,000 views.

The band initially came together to release Beatles covers (and were quite aptly named Dr. Peppers Jaded Hearts Club Band) but then started covering songs from other artists then eventually making their own original songs. The band have gone full circle; from performing Beatles covers to then having Paul McCartney perform with them.

Seeing the trajectory of the band so far, you have to think that they have a big story yet to come. If it will be as big as their own respective projects, it will definitely be one to watch. With the names in the band, it’s almost as if success will be guaranteed. Hopefully that is not the commentators’ curse but it is safe to bet that they will be good to watch.

The names attached to the band would be enough to warrant getting excited over never mind being in the same band. It is the type of thing you never thought you would see. Fans of Muse, Blur, Last Shadow Puppets will find more than enough to get excited over.

In a somewhat surprising move, the ever amazing Arlo Parks has covered a fellow young British singer King Krule for her ‘lo-fi lounge’. This is the newest in a range of covers that go from Frank Ocean, Glass Animals and even to Hayley Williams. So there is a lot for anyone to pick from.

Parks has been a very vocal fan of King Krule and has continually confessed how much he has had an effect on her as an artist. So I am sure that this was one that she enjoyed covering a little more than her previous releases. This comes not long after she released her ‘At Home’ session on Apple Music. So we are being blessed by her.

This is Baby Blue by King Krule – one of my favourite songs of all time. It reminds me of waking up slowly, soft grey skies and swimming. There is nothing like sharing it with a friend or a lover for the first time – it gets in your blood and stays there.https://t.co/vQKfb3KLXKpic.twitter.com/uferZ9hTL2

Krule, real name Archy Marshall, released ‘Baby Blue’ on his debut album ‘6 Feet Under the Moon’. Since then he has gone on to release two more albums under the King Krule moniker and both have been a resounding success.

So far, Parks has only released the covers onto her YouTube channel but fingers crossed she releases them properly. This would see at least five top class covers will be available for our enjoyment. You can listen to the King Krule cover below;

In the last two years, Parks has seen her career go from strength to strength. From breaking through in 2018 to teasing us with her debut album almost two years later, everything she has touched has turned into gold. Including a song that was already gold.

This shows us that we could have a star on our hands here. Consistent music, individuality in her music and her voice does not harm anything either. When you roll all that into one package you get a star. Oh, you also get Arlo Parks.

Beabadoobee has had a massive few years. Since 2018 she has; signed to Dirty Hit Records, released six EP’s, been on the cover of NME and has even been nominated for a Brit Award. Now she got the opportunity to pay tribute to her very own favourite songwriter, American lo-fi legend Daniel Johnston. She covered his song ‘Walking the Cow’ and you can find it on Apple Music.

The Philippine born singer songwriter is scheduled to release her debut album later this year with the date yet to be announced. Released on Apple Music, the cover is part of the ‘At Home’ sessions where artists release some covers of their choice. The other song was an acoustic cover of her own song ‘Care’.

For those who do not know who Daniel Johnston is, he was one of the most influential artists to come out of the American underground scene. He was propelled into the limelight when Kurt Cobain was pictured wearing a t-shirt that had the cover for his album ‘Hi, How Are You’. Johnston was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and used to hand his music out at the Mcdonalds he worked at, but his music was known for his childlike qualities and its purity.

This is something which the artist commented on saying “I chose to cover Daniel Johnston’s ‘Walking the Cow’ because he is one of my favourite songwriters of all time. Doing that song reminded me how pure and honest his writing can be.” Unfortunately, Daniel Johnston died last year, but with artists as young as 20 performing his music will make sure that that stays with us for a long more time to come.

Recently, Beabadoobee has released a music video for her song “Care”. You can now watch this on her YouTube channel here;

To achieve what she has done in as many years is a great feat for any artist, never mind a 20 year old. Having shown to have not only high potential as an artist, but she also looks to have a good head on her shoulders which, when paired together, could create a new star. Given the quality of her previous releases and her label compatriots being one of the biggest bands in the world (The 1975) it seems to all be sitting up nicely for the London based singer. Time can only tell.
