Behemoth’s frontman Adam ‘Nergal’ Darski has released a new Western-inspired single “Under the Spell” from his upcoming solo album New Man, New Songs, Same Shit Vol2. The album is out tomorrow, 19th November via Napalm Records.

The track is part of his solo project ‘Me and That Man’ and features mysterious Mary Goore, known as Ghost’s Tobias Forge. The new song is accompanied by a captivating music video, which you can watch below.

The new track is in contract with a recent dark, soulful rock ballad “Angel of Light”. “‘Angel Of Light’ is a somber guitar-centric track that incorporates harrowing guest vocals from singer Amalie Bruun, who is better known as Myrkur“.

The “Under the Spell” on the other hand enters heavier horizons with dark guitars and raspy vocals of Mary Goore. That creates “an ambience full of untamed anger with an unmistakable vintage Western touch”. Nergal commented on the new single: “Here we go folks! We’re back again, this time with “Under The Spell” featuring Mary Goore. It’s rockabilly on steroids – I love the song. It’s a part of ME AND THAT MAN that we hadn’t yet explored in this form. For now, enjoy the single, full album will be with you soon!”.

Nergal’s new album influenced by folk/blues/Americana is his third full-length release. The upcoming album is different from the usual Behemoth style, but still from the world of metal. Speaking about the release he said: “There are plenty of guests. The main idea of Me and That Man is all about the collaborations. We have some amazing guys – people from all over the place. Some legendary figures and some individuals who are new to the scene. Heavy metal and beyond heavy metal“.

“Volume 2 consists of several studio sessions. One is the Volume 1 studio session that we used for that album, then we did another studio session that was specifically dedicated for Volume 2, plus there are some outtakes from the first album [Songs of Love and Death] – from years before – that we worked on, and they ended up on the record. So, it’s why this album is very versatile. Maybe more than Volume 1” he continues.

Speaking about the sound difference to Behemoth, Nergal said: “Of course, there are no secrets – with Behemoth, it’s a high-gain band. You’ve got to have this sustain and punch. You can’t do that with the Me and That Man setup. So, it’s basically two opposite worlds – because the music comes from two opposite angles. I mean, you can compare it… But what’s the purpose? It’s not going to work.” “You don’t want to hear any Behemoth song played with my Me and That Man set-up. We could never pull off anything – because it would sound like… someone farted!”

The musician who gets through legal battles in Poland, told recently Telegraph that: “It gets painful, it gets more and more annoying. And trust me, I’m an energetic person, and I’m up for a fight. It just gets to the point where it’s just stupid. Some of the accusations are just dumb, or completely irrational, and you can only laugh about it. It’s like, seriously, you’re gonna use your time and public money — because this is public money — to prove what? It’s aimless. It’s stupid”.

You can pre-order New Man, New Songs, Same Shit Vol.2 here.

The forthcoming album will be a double LP “exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief“. The album has been recorded during four distinct sessions in four different locations: In Upstate New York, Topanga Canyon, The Rocky Mountains, and Tucson, Arizona. During five months of recordings, they have created 45 completed songs, edited down to 20 tracks.

Album has been produced by James Krivchenia who pitched the recording concept of DNMIBIY back in 2019 “with the goal of encapsulating the many different aspects of Adrianne’s songwriting and the band onto a single record”.

Singer Adrianne Lenker said in press: “One of the things that bonds us together as a band is pure magic. I think we all have the same guide and none of us have ever spoken what it is because we couldn’t name it, but somehow, we are all going for the same thing, and when we hit it… we all know it’s it, but none of us to this day, or maybe ever, will be able to articulate in words what the ‘it’ is. Something about it is magic to me.”

All four experimental recording sessions that made the album varied in style and mood which makes it a more “honest, zoomed-out picture of lived experience than would be possible on a traditional, 12 song record.”

Max Oleartchik commented about playing with the band again after a long stretch of a pandemic: “Well it’s like, we’re a band, we talk, we have different dynamics, we do the breaths, and then we go on stage and suddenly it feels like we are now on a dragon. And we can’t really talk because we have to steer this dragon.“

The news about the tour came shortly after drummer Matt Helders revealed in an interview that the album is almost ready. “Yeah, pretty much, yeah.
“I think by the time we get everything together it’ll be next year. Hopefully we can get out and tour next summer” he added.

Asked about the sound on the new album he said: “We tend to always move it on a little bit, For us, because we’re so involved in it, it always makes sense. They always kind of pick up where the other one left off in a way. It makes sense when you think about it in the context of the last record. But we always do try and do something a bit different – it’s kind of hard to describe. You can tell it’s the same band”.

Back in January, the band confirmed working on a follow-up album to Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino which received amazing reviews and peaked at No 1 on UK Album Charts. Mxdwn review praised it: “From front to back, there’s only good music to be found at this inn, so come and stay for a while.

Bonobo released his latest single “Otomo” from the upcoming, seventh studio album Fragments. The album is out on 14th January and can be pre-ordered here.

The new, dynamic single features O’Flynn, who co-produced it and turned Bonobo’s sample of a “Bulgarian choir – called 100 Kaba-Gaidi - into a dramatic breakdown and beat drop“. The new track is the most groovy hip-shaking one that the producer ever put on tape. “The song coming together also helped to remind Green of the sense of dancefloor abandon and surging crowds that he had so crucially missed” states the press release.

Simon Green (aka Bonobo) said on the new release in a statement: “Otomo’ began with a sample of a Bulgarian choir. Melodically it was working well but needed a dynamic shift. I asked my friend O’Fllynn for input. He sent it back with a dance floor ready drum section. It’s one of my favorites from the album. I’ve been playing it all year in my dj sets, there’s already a huge response and a feeling of immediate familiarity”.

O’Flynn added: “Simon messaged me last year with a track he was working on and asked for some feedback. I took a punt and asked for the stems to try some ideas on. The tune had this big choir sample and chords in – I went to work trying to contrast that choir with something much harder to try and change the context, using the choir and chords as this kind of relief to this big percussive 808 drop. Luckily Simon liked what I did and we developed the tune from there”.

O’Flynn shared in a statement how to be asked for feedback from Green caught him off guard: “So I had this driving force and pressure to come up with something that could take the idea in a new direction and hit the high bar Simon sets with all his productions”.

You can listen to “Otomo” below.

Last month the producer released singles “Rosewood” and “Tides” featuring Jamila Woods. The second track has been described as “blissfull’ by Clash and has been single of the week in The Observer.

The upcoming album will feature other musicians like Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakel and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Talking about his work process Bonobo shared with Rolling Stone: “Usually part of the process is you work on something and you go out and play it that weekend”. That way, “you can really tell when a tune dies on the dancefloor. It’s invaluable.” You think, ‘this is it, this is the club track! Then it falls flat.’” And on the flip side, “some things really get a big reaction when you’re least expecting it” – he continues.

Bonobo heading on a live tour next year, headlining three nights at the Royal Albert Hall. More tour dates can be found in the previous mxdwn article.

Melbourne trio HighSchool announced three shows in the UK next year: in Manchester, Margate and London. The short tour will mark the release of their debut EP Forever At Last.

The band will have a chance to finally perform live after the longest lockdown for a city in the world, with it to open only last month, which makes 267 days in total. Talking about the hard times, vocalist Rory Trobbiani said: “It feels like we’ve fallen into an endless abyss of time. But we’re ready to come out of this mess as a stronger and better band”.

In 2020 the band signed with Dalliance Recordings and released their debut EP Forever At Last on the 1st November. In four stars review, NME described it as “the pain and frustration of isolation against a backdrop of introverted goth-pop”. “HighSchool’s efforts to build tension, craft memorable, textured melodies and achieve catharsis makes their music refreshingly human and transparent” praise the review.

The trio also decided to move to London in December, despite them visiting the capital only once. “I feel like putting ourselves out of our comfort zone by moving to London will hopefully give us a bit of a kick up the arse, and throw us into a different kind of lifestyle as a band. And isn’t that exactly what we need?” explained bassist Luke Scott.

Last September HighSchool released a video for “Jerry”, directed and produced by Rory. They always wanted to make art that’s challenging and provocative, which can be clearly seen in the video. Watch it below.

“When we started out, we had a strong idea of what we wanted to do with our videos and how we wanted to dress – and we based the sound around that, which is obviously a bit of a backwards way of doing it” explains Scott.

“But the art doesn’t end with the music – for us, it extends our fashion and our videos. There’s no reason why we need to make distinctions between music and the visual side of things. Believe it or not, we’re just trying to add a bit of colour to the world” added keyboardist Lili Trobbiani.

The band started their career in 2020, rehearsing in the storage container in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick. Initially, the two-piece band called Rosary evolved to a trio. See HighSchool UK Tour dates below. Tickets are available here.

Speaking to journalist Chris Black about the upcoming show, Gahan said: “To get to play this special album on a stage in front of people, with the same group of musicians who recorded the album, that’s really important to me. I’m incredibly excited to present it live.”

The collaborative album has been announced last month and the first single “Metal Heart” has been released soon after. The first single is “The soft sentimental song floods the listener’s ears with magnificent harmonies alongside the slow-building percussive elements that crescendo towards an uplifting end” praised mxdwn. Brooklyn Vegan added: “His version starts much like Cat Power’s spare original, from 1998’s Moon Pix, with just his voice and a guitar, but it soon grows into a full-on, stadium-sized rock epic”. Clash noted that Imposter is “a rare chance to hear Dave Gahan sing other people’s material, but it’s also much more than a standard covers record.“

The second single of the upcoming album was “The Dark End Of The Street”. “Written in 1966 by Chips Moman and Dan Penn, and soul singer James Carr recorded it as his signature single. Carr’s version made it on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time and the song has since been covered by numerous artists, from Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton and now Dave Gahan. Gahan and Machin bring a bluesy grit to the song that give it an uplifting quality”.

New Album is Gahan and Soulsavers Rick Machin third album, following their first release The Light The Dead See from 2012 and critically acclaimed Angels & Ghosts from 2015.
“Imposter is a story of songs, which Dave Gahan & Soulsavers listened to, studied, absorbed, and gave a new life.
Nova Twins consisting of vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South has been named by Rolling Stone UK magazine as “the most vital rock band in Britain right now”. The band headlined the Climate Live show and performed alongside indie rock band Second Thoughts and Dj sets from Girli and July Jones. See the footage and pictures from the gig below:

>One of the tracks performed by the duo was their recent single “Antagonist”. The song has been released last month via Marshall Records and was their first new music since the debut album from 2020 Who Are The Girls?. The song debuted on Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1 with Clara Amfo on 27th October. Watch the video for it below.

Nova Twins shared recently that they are five songs ahead in the recording process of the next, second album. South commented: “We’re definitely experimenting with things, and it sounds more like us than ever, in a way. All those little details and the scrappiness of things, that’s what feels ‘Nova’. To stay DIY but to keep progressing, it’s cool to send a message that anyone can do it… Just get grafting, and you can make magic”.

“Our thing has always been that if you can’t play it yourself on guitar, drums and bass, it’s not going on the record. We’re not saying that we’ll never go bigger, but for where we’re at with a second record, it’s nice to feel like it’s still a ‘come as you are’ kind of thing. We don’t want to say too much just yet, but trust us – when this album comes out, we feel like you’ll know about it!” added Love.

The Climate Live initiative has been launched in November last year and debuted this year’s April. They aim to “enlarge the global movement [to fight climate change] by engaging with a new audience through music”.

“It all began as a glimmer of an idea in May 2019 that then caught the attention of youth across the globe. It has been humbling to see so many getting involved: there have been regular calls with organisers in over 40 countries as we grappled with the logistics to pull all the events off. It was incredible seeing Greta Thunberg launch the first of the concerts in 20 countries across the world and here we are today with the latest in the series” commented Climate Live Founder Frances Fox. You can take part in the initiative by signing the petition to target world leaders here.

Derbyshire Y Not Festival added some exciting new acts to its line-up for the 2022 edition. The festival has been cancelled two years in a row due to Covid-19 and it’s coming back with a bang next summer.

In September they announced the first wave of music acts with Courteeners, Blossoms, Nothing But Thieves among others. “WE ARE BUZZING TO ANNOUNCE OUR FIRST WAVE OF ACTS FOR Y NOT FESTIVAL 2022! SO EXCITED TO WELCOME BOTH COURTEENERS AND BLOSSOMS AS OUR HEADLINERS, PLUS A RETURNING HEADLINER TO BE REVEALED SOON..” they shared at the time.

Yesterday, the festival organisers topped up the list with legends, Stereophonics and Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers. The Vaccines and Nothing But Thieves are also added to the slot. “The new editions don’t stop there… Easy Life, Sea Girls, The Snuts, Dinosaur Pile Up, The Big Moon, Black Honey, Orla Gartland, The Reytons, The Futureheads, Dream Wife, Yard Act, Billie Marten & Baby Queen are all along for the long awaited 15th edition of Y Not!” tease organisers.

The 15th edition of the festival will take place between 29-31 July in Pikehall and it looks incredible already. Stereophonics will make a comeback after their headline set in 2017. The band’s founding member Richard Jones said: “We can’t wait to finally play Y Not again next summer – if the last time we performed there is anything to go by, next year’s festival will be great“.

“Back in 2017 the rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the crowd who were up for a good time – I remember watching Slaves and Jake Bugg who were both on form. After a tough couple of years for everyone, it will be a very memorable weekend. See you there!”

Four-time Brit award winner Manic Street Preachers will also join the 2022 stage sharing the biggest hits and some tracks from their recent No 1 album The Ultra Vivid Lament.

Justin Young from The Vaccines, who also played at the festival in 2017 said: “In 2017, we sat backstage in torrential rain desperately hoping that we’d be allowed to play for everyone at Y Not”.

“The gods decided it wasn’t to be, and we left the festival as miserable as the weather. So we couldn’t be happier that after a 5 year wait, we’re finally getting the chance to right that wrong and bring the thunder ourselves…”
