It was September 2018 when Shabaka Hutchings took to the stage of the Hyundai Mercury Prize awards with his band Sons Of Kemet to perform the song ‘My Queen is Harriet Tubman’. This performance was brimming with energy and had the crowd in awe, leading to the only standing ovation of the evening. Coming off of the success of their 2018 album ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’, leading UK jazz pioneer, saxophonist, clarinettist and composer Shabaka Hutchings has arrived with tuba player Theon Cross and two drummers Eddie Hick and Tom Skinner for the fourth studio album.

The album titled ‘Black To The Future’ sees the return of the Your Queen Is A Reptile band lineup, arriving in a moment of political turmoil. The social commentary runs deep in this project, with the intro featuring bleak words from renowned poet Joshua Idehen setting the tone for the rest of the LP. Other features on the album include Philadelphia poet Moor Mother, composer Angel Bat Dawid, London rapper Kojey Radical and veteran grime MC D Double E. This more feature heavy approach differs from their previous works, with the band fusing hip-hop and grime in with their afro-jazz sensibilities.

Black To The Future is available to purchase from retailers such as Rough Trade and their official store, with formats coming in black vinyl and CD. Record subscription service Vinyl Me Please is offering a limited-edition gold and black melt colour LP, pressed by VMP themselves resulting in exclusivity. The album sees its release through the American jazz record label Impulse! Records, a label that has seen jazz royalty pass through, including the likes of John Coltrane one of the labels earliest signings after its formation in 1960. You can stream the incredible fourth album by Sons Of Kemet below.

Hailing from Stirling, an old town in central Scotland, electronic producer Sam Gellaitry was left isolated from the bustling scenes of dance music hotspots such as Los Angeles and London. His sound has been developed over the years from an interest in the happy hardcore sounds of nearby city Glasgow, and with influence from his older brothers record collection. As stated in his Spotify bio, “His music is a journey through experience, circumstance and surroundings, told through his impressive synesthesia informed knowledge of different musical tones”, akin to others in the electronic scene like co-signers Kaytranada and Flume.

Sam burst onto the scene in 2014 with his single ‘Powder’. With this new found buzz, he set out to release his first extended play, one that would change his career trajectory completely. With the release of ‘Escapism’, Sam’s debut EP in 2015 on XL Recordings, he began to take off as a producer and an artist, feeding his fans with a complete trilogy of Escapism projects by 2017. The first studio album arrived in 2019 to mass acclaim. ‘Viewfinder Vol. 1: PHOSPHENE’ saw Sam tackling new sounds and expanding his wide range of genre influences to the likes of funk and soul.

The latest project from Sam Gellaitry comes as an unofficial sequel to the Escapism extended play series. The four track affair titled ‘IV’ takes the listener through a funky journey of refreshing electronic goodness for the duration of the project, also featuring the single ‘Duo’ which Sam told Clash “i wanted there to be a sense of invincibility when you’re listening to it: someone tweeted that the track made them feel like the main character of a movie, i love that.”. The new EP is available on all major streaming services, listen to it below.

Black Butter Records is a British record label that was founded in 2010 by Olly Wood, Henry Village and Joe Gossa. Under the parent company Sony Music, Black Butter has gone on to make a large impact in a small amount of time, currently boasting an impressive roster of artists including Bakar, French Montana, J Hus, Take a Daytrip and Young T & Bugsey. The London based label also holds responsibility for the first releases of Clean Bandit and Rudimental who both went onwards to sign to Warner Music, and Jessie Ware who subsequently signed with Universal.

Black Butter’s most recent venture involves none other than DJ and producer p-rallel. The West London based artist has been shaping his expansive sound alongside his counterparts in the Elevation/Meditation collective consisting of other notable names Lord Apex, Louis Culture and Finn Foxell. It is with this involvement in production for key figures in the London hip-hop/R&B scene that has gained p-rallel notoriety, landing him positions on tour with Lava La Rue, Jeshi and one of England’s latest exports Slowthai.

After announcing on Instagram the signing to Black Butter Records a week and a half ago, it has since been revealed a further subsidiary label is being launched, with p-rallel as the debut signee. The label named 4ZA has launched with a new website currently displaying the logo and a contact email for any further enquiries. It is unknown who else will be signing to 4ZA if anyone, but with p-rallel’s chameleon style encompassing genres from hip-hop, to garage, to soul, to jungle there is lot to play around with here in terms of rosters. It is here that fans expect to see the release of his next extended play, following the highly regarded ‘Soundboy’ EP from 2020.

“GoGo Penguin have been hailed as the Radiohead of British jazz, but they draw equally on rock, jazz and minimalist influences, alongside the intricacy of Aphex Twin and Four Tet to create their punchy, experimental but always beautiful music”, a vast number of genre and artist influences as listed in their Spotify bio creates the perfect foundation for a remix album of the nu-jazz powerhouse.

After the band featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner obtained notoriety after their Mercury Prize success, they have been building up their relations and collaboration with a handful of artists across all genres, as displayed in this new remix album titled ‘GGP/RMX’. The Manchester band have tapped a star studded roster of artists to tackle songs from their previous self-titled album from 2020. The eleven track affair sees remixes from ten different GoGo Penguin songs from artists all across the globe.

Artists involved in the project include Japanese experimental pop artist Cornelius, dancefloor heavyweight and IAMSIAM record label owner Machinedrum, electronic and nature infused musician Yosi Horikawa, French producer Rone, experimental drum & bass legend Squarepusher, British tech-house artist Nathan Fake, 80s dance hitmakers 808 State, electronic musician James Holden, multi-instrumentalist and producer Shunya, renowned British producer Clark and closing out with fellow British jazz group Portico Quartet.

GGP/RMX is available for purchase on the Blue Note Records store as a download or as a double vinyl LP. The hour long project comes complete with two records, one in blue and one in red and comes with a digital download upon purchase. The album is also available on all major streaming services right now. You can stream it on Spotify here below.

All female indie rock, neo-psychedelia, post-punk and everything in between band Goat Girl have released their extended play ‘Sad Cowboy (Remixes)’ as a reprise to the highly acclaimed album ‘On All Fours’ which saw its release in January of this year.

The EP includes five tracks over two sides. The first side includes the original track followed by Portuguese producer Nidia’s remix, an inventive artist who merges lots of afro-portugese dance styles into her music including kuduro, batida and tarraxhina. Side B treats us to remixes from the likes of London three-piece band PVA, a genre bending group consisting of London musicians Ella Harris, Josh Baxter and Louis Satchell. This group started out performing at The Brixton Windmill, the same venue that gave Goat Girl exposure early in their career also.

British-Nigerian electronic artist Tony Njoku also gave the track his own take on things. This experimental producer blends sensual vocals with glitchy and lively production. The last remix comes with Cameron Picton (also known as DJ Dairy) from the experimental outfit and Mercury Prize nominated Black Midi, a solo side project from the bassist and vocalist taking a more electronic approach to that of his bandmates.

The twenty-two-minute EP is available to purchase in the form of a 12 inch record. The vinyl comes in black and currently has a limited run of only 850 copies stocked by retailer Rough Trade Records. The record comes complete with the beautiful psychedelic album artwork from the EP, fitting in with the band’s visual identity well. Sad Cowboy (Remixes) is available on all major streaming services right now to listen to.

The experimental five-piece band Squid have arrived during an ongoing explosion of talent in the realms of contemporary post-punk. Bands are forming out England’s political frustrations, taking the previous sounds of the likes of Talking Heads and other pioneering acts, seeking to modernize them and create a new voice in the form of experimental rock. In Squid’s case, the bands NEU! and This Heat are listed as influences, where their sounds have shaped them as a band. In 2019, Squid released their second and most pivotal extended play ‘Town Centre’ on the Dan Carey led label Speedy Wunderground, a key development in the bands style of music.

The album ‘Bright Green Field’ released on Friday featuring further production by Dan Carey, an influential figure in this emerging scene who has previously aided other bands such as Black Country New Road, Fontaines D.C and Black Midi. The lead single ‘Narrator’ was released late January of this year, instantly developing hype for the album rollout. After two more singles ‘Paddling’ and ‘Pamphlets’, the album saw its release on the acclaimed Warp Records. Upon release the album has received many genre tags, ranging from dance-punk, to math-rock to post-rock, solidifying its nature as a forward-thinking release.

There are physicals available for purchase for the LP NME described in a review as “An uncompromising debut that fulfils every ounce of the band’s potential”. Warp Records store lists a limited-edition gatefold green vinyl LP, a standard black LP, a CD complete with digipack and booklet and a red cassette available for purchase. Other merch is also available including t-shirts, hats, socks and other apparel. Squid themselves in the description on the online store stated “this is the debut album we’ve always wanted to make and without a doubt the most ambitious thing we’ve ever done. We can’t wait for you to hear the whole thing”. You can stream the dazzling debut record below.

London based soul artist IYAMAH first arrived on the scene with her debut single ‘Cryptic Love’ in 2018, since then her rise to becoming apart of the neo-soul movement in the UK has been rapid. Having grown up on reggae and African style music from a young age, her style incorporates the likes of Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu with her parent’s generation of music, a style she self-proclaimed as Rootsy Soul.

As of today, IYAMAH has released her new extended play titled ‘Tough Love’. The eight track soulful affair details her trials and tribulations with relationships, featuring the singles ‘More’ featuring Coops, which she described to Trench as “‘a glimpse into that kind of love that we all fantasise over”, and ‘Sofa’, which came accompanied by a music video starring herself. The EP is available on all major streaming services with a running time of twenty-two minutes.

Tough Love is the third project released by IYAMAH. Her two previous extended plays titled ‘Truth EP 1’ and ‘Truth EP 2’ respectively were key to helping her build a following as an artist. These two projects have spawned some of her biggest songs, including the hit Cryptic Love and other fan favourites ‘KYWK’, ‘Balance’ and ‘Lone Soldier’. With her rising popularity, IYAMAH’s Jazz Café show in London has since been rescheduled. The fully social distanced and seated affair will be a celebration of the new extended play, also harping back to the Truth projects. The show is scheduled to take place at the established Camden venue Jazz Café, which has seen iconic performances from the likes of D’Angelo and Amy Winehouse. The sold out event is set to be a breakthrough performance for IYAMAH, who will be performing songs from the new EP which can be streamed below.

British-Ghanaian record producer Juls found influence in both London and Accra, building up his portfolio throughout the 2010s of production rooted in afrobeats. Juls has amassed a decorated production discography including the likes of Mr Eazi, Stonebwoy and Burna Boy. It was not long before his solo work started to gain traction, with the release of ‘Leap Of Faith’ in 2017 followed by ‘Colour’ in 2019. These projects featured an array of artists from the UK and beyond performing over his production. Acclaimed artists such as Pa Salieu, Kojey Radical, Odunsi (The Engine), Cruel Santino and Knucks all tapped in on vocals, adding to the impressive roster.

It was earlier this week that Juls took to twitter with a previously teased announcement about new music. It reads “And the announcement is …. My first album is done. No EP or mixtape! My first album ever ….. The challenges have been real but God has been realer. It’s above my hands now, I give my all to you the listeners. Thank you. It’s time. New Music this week”. Juls later solidified this news with the Thursday release of his new single titled ‘Chance’. He links up with Projexx and Tay Iwar for the summer ready tune. The track follows the 2020 single featuring p-rallel and the returning Tay Iwar titled ‘1985’.

With no release date confirmed for the album, but with a hinted summer release date, we can only await what Juls has in store for his fans next. The currently East London residing producer and musician has been putting the work in during lockdown, producing additional hits for afrobeats titan WizKid and DC rapper GoldLink. Stream the new single from the highly anticipated album ‘Chance’ on all major streaming services.

Pray comes as a kickstart to Joe Armon-Jones’ own label Aquarii Records, which will serve as an outlet for all his own releases. The website states “Aquarii is the new label from London-based keyboardist, composer and producer Joe Armon-Jones, officially launched on May 4th, 2021 with his new solo single ‘Pray’.

Rochelle Jordan has returned with her highly anticipated album titled ‘Play With The Changes’ released on Young Art Records. “Born in London to British-Jamaican parents” as the press release states, “Jordan and her family relocated to the eastside of Toronto in the early ‘90s. Her father, a drummer, encouraged her love of art and instilled an appreciation for Northern soul, and Jamaican reggae and dancehall. Bleeding through the walls of her childhood bedroom, the adolescent Jordan soaked in the record collection of her older brother: funky UK house, nocturnal drum and bass, garage, and all the gospel samples contained therein.”

Since her upbringing Jordan has channelled her variety of influences into some cutting edge music that sits in the vein of R&B and electronic. After a string of mixtapes in the early 2010s, she relocated once again from Toronto to Los Angeles, where she would meet with artists such as Jessie Ware, resulting in her opening on Jessie’s tour. At the same time Jordan was receiving some call ups to write, including for Childish Gambino’s highly anticipated project ‘Because the Internet’. A similar time frame also saw the release of her debut studio album ‘1021’ in 2014. This was her last solo project for over six years, where in the break she worked with producers such as Jacquees Greene, JIMMY EDGAR and the incredible UK producer Machinedrum, who would later play a pivotal role in Play With The Changes.

The album features production by Machinedrum on nearly every song, with additional help from JIMMY EDGAR, Alix Perez, SEPELCURE and long-time collaborator KLSH. This roster of producers has helped Jordan create a sound like no other, providing listeners with a project waiting to be unleashed into the post-lockdown world. The album is available on all major streaming services as well as physicals on her Bandcamp page.
