Musicians and music industry figures have signed an open letter calling for an alternative to Brexit. Stars signing the letter, drafted by Music4EU, include Paloma Faith (pictured), Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, and film composer David Arnold.

Sammy Andrews, CEO of Deviate Digital, and co-organiser of Music4EU said: “Rarely do so many factions within the music industry unite on any subject, but Music4EU’s signatory list so far is a clear indication of the level of concern over the current mess, and how widely it impacts every corner of this sector.Brexit is an unmitigated disaster for Britain’s world-leading music industry.”

The Letter, published by the Music4EU initiative, describes Brexit as a “significant threat” to the country’s music industry, adding: “Leaving the EU’s customs union, single market, VAT area and regulatory framework could devastate our global market leadership, and damage our freedom to trade, tour and to promote our artists and our works.” Concerns are also voiced over access to foreign markets and regulation over copyright, before a request to “examine alternative options to maintain our current influence and freedom to trade”.

In September, the head of the industry body BPI, Geoff Taylor, said: “that bureaucracy could make it more difficult for British artists to promote their albums overseas in the EU if we don’t have an acceptable deal”. Taylor voiced concerned about manufacturing delays, touring restrictions, and a “weakening of our intellectual property protection”.

In addition to those who have already signed it, the open letter includes an invitation for other UK-based musicians and music industry professionals to add their names. Read the Open Letter in full below.

“We, the signatories of this letter, represent artists, producers, managers, businesses, and platforms from across the Music Industry in the UK and are writing to express our real concerns over Brexit and the current direction of the UK’s proposed departure from the EU.

“Brexit represents a significant threat to the UK’s Music Industry. Leaving the EU’s customs union, single market, VAT area and regulatory framework (in whole or part) could devastate our global market leadership, and damage our freedom to trade, tour and to promote our artists and our works.

“The music industry contributes £4.5 billion to the UK economy, and our world-beating artists helped to create exports of over £2.5 billion, which is growing fast in a global digital music business. Live music is at the heart of every artist’s business and contributed around £1bn to the UK economy, and freedom of movement is core to an artist’s ability to tour and promote their art.”

Continuing the letter said: “The EU’s proposed reforms to the Digital Single Market, many of which were submitted by the UK, are intended to help consumers and technology businesses grow the market yet further, and the proposals for the EU Copyright Directive are designed to help protect the value of our industry’s output on major technology platforms. The UK music industry could be at a significant disadvantage to our peers in the countries remaining in the EU without these protections.

“According to a survey conducted by UK Music on the Music Industry’s views on Brexit, only 2% thought Brexit would have a positive impact on their chances of work. In the Post-Brexit UK, there is a clear risk that reaching consumers and fans will be more expensive, and international markets will be harder to access. Live events will run the danger of being delayed or even cancelled, which would undermine the financial and cultural benefits that this vibrant sector brings to UK PLC.

“No-one voted for this situation, whether they voted Leave or Remain. It is critical to find a way out of this mess, and therefore we ask you to examine alternative options to maintain our current influence and freedom to trade.”

Ed Sheeran has responded to backlash over his choice of attire while performing next to an extravagantly-dressed Beyonce in South Africa. A photo of the global superstars at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 in Johannesburg, in which the British singer opted for a causal jeans and tee combo while Beyoncé wowed in a hot pink dress, sparked a heated debate.

However, Ed, 27, saw the funny side of the situation as he took to his Instagram Stories by sharing a story written about the drama and also offered a link for his followers to buy his black top.

Ed, who is known for his usual casual displays, shared a story titled: ‘People Are Angry Ed Sheeran Wore a Shirt while Beyoncé Wore Couture During their Global Citizen Performance.’

He went on to offer a closer look at the shirt, which had HOAXUKSINCE94 written on it’, alongside the comments #dressedtoimpress and ‘swipe up to get the look.’

Many felt that the singers, who performed their duet ‘perfect’ together, offered a reflection on the different expectations put on men and women when it comes to clothes.

@sillyolddaniel added: ‘This photo is v v v v representative of what we expect from men and women at the top of their game, isn’t it?’

Plenty disagreed: @TheAntiStan wrote: ‘There is definitely a double standard regarding the acceptable public appearance of men and women. But this is more an example of celebrity brands. Beyonce has a brand.

Sam Fender has been confirmed as the winner of the 2019 Brits Critics’ Choice Award, the prestigious honor has previously been won by the likes of Adele and Sam Smith.

The ‘Dead Boys’ singer said: “I am truly humbled to win The BRITs Critics’ Choice Award. Being nominated was crazy enough, never mind winning it. I’m so grateful to everyone back home for believing, and to my band and team for all their hard work. We’ve played literally hundreds of shows this year, and we’re going to go even harder in 2019.

‘Most importantly, a big shout to my fans. I’ve met a lot of you over the last few years and it’s truly an honour to get up and play night after night to such a wonderful bunch of people. To everyone who’s taken a punt on me so far, thank you. Here’s to next year!”

In an interview with Sky News, Fender explained how he was traveling in a taxi in his home town when he found out he had won the award. “We were in a taxi driving back to my manager’s house [when I found out]. I was driving past my old school, which was very strange, and the label rang, and he put them on loudspeaker and then he was just like, you’ve got it mate, you’ve got it. I just started screaming. I was punching all the seats in the taxi going completely mad.”

The 24-year-old from North Shields played his first gig in a pub. He was on the BBC Sound of 2018 list and says it is “pure fluke” that he is now a full-time musician. The award is given to an artist who the critics think will be a “future star” in the UK record industry.

A source close to Apple confirmed on Friday that the technology giant has purchased the London based artists and repertoire company set up by technology investor Saul Klein and music industry veteran Denzyl Feigelson in 2016.

The deal will see Apple increase the amount of support that it can offer to new musicians using the business’ Apple Music streaming service. Since its launch, Platoon has worked with some big emerging artists such as Billie Eilish, Stefflon Don and Jorja Smith.

Platoon has always had close links to Apple thanks to co-founder Mr Feigelson, who worked closely with Apple for 15 years on projects including its iTunes music store and its yearly iTunes Festival in London.

The company’s other co-founder, Mr Klein, previously co-founded technology business LoveFilm. He now invests in early-stage technology businesses through his LocalGlobe investment firm.

The 1975’s frontman Matty Healy has apologized for “patronizing, uninformed, and reductive” comments he made about misogyny and drugs in hip-hop in an interview with Larry Fitzmaurice for The Fader.

During the interview, Larry brought up the bands single “Love It If We Made It” and asked Healy, “What’s your perspective on drugs in the music industry right now?” Healy’s reply reads:

“One of the problems is the youth of hip-hop. At the moment, with SoundCloud rap, it’s become a bit of a drug-taking competition, and that happened in rock’n’roll. Those things get weeded out the longer those things exist. The reason misogyny doesn’t happen in rock’n’roll anymore is because it’s a vocabulary that existed for so long is that it got weeded out. It still exists in hip-hop because [the genre] is so young, but it’ll stop. That’s why you have this moment with young black men—Kanye-aged men, as well—talking about their relationship with themselves, which is a big step forward for hip-hop. Drake, for example. But then they’ll be like, “But I still got bitches.” The scene’s relationship with women hasn’t caught up to its relationship with itself, but that’s something that will happen.

I don’t know what the “industry” is but the industry seems to be very hip-hop-led at the moment, promoting the idea of being spaced-out because it’s going through a psychedelic moment. One of the reasons why I was so terrified of being exposed that I was using heroin is because of how much of a cliche it would make me. You know me enough already to understand that the idea of me doing something that’s an actual rock’n’roll cliche is something I’d want to avoid. We don’t have the cliches of Xanax yet. It’s scary. The reason that Peep resonated with me so much is that he died while I was in rehab. He’s 10 years younger than me.”

Matt took to twitter to open up on his comments and add some clarification to what he was trying to say.

“What I said isn’t correct. And it’s not all a misquote. Just for clarity I said that misogyny wasn’t ALLOWED in rock and roll now days in a way it is in hip hop – not that it doesn’t exist, that’s maybe a misquote as I’m aware of the misogyny in rocknroll…I would never deny the RAMPANT misogyny that exists in rock’n’roll. It’s everywhere and has been a weirdly accepted part of it since its inception.”

“Just to clarify I’m not apologizing for saying ‘rock music is void of misogyny’. I didn’t say that. Any body who says that is not only thick as fuck they most probably don’t have physical eyes. It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. I’m apologising for the fact my words could INSINUATE that misogyny in culture and music is an exclusively hip hop (black) issue. I do not believe that. What I believe is that I’m not educated enough to speak on THAT properly and a big part of that is this white dick that I have”
