Based on their UK search results, google has named their biggest artists for 2020. The US rapper Kayne West has been in the news frequently this year, not just for his music releases, but for rants on titter about his UMG recording contract and his unsuccessful bid for US Presidency. Along with the coronavirus and the US election being top queries in the UK searches, he was in fact the only music artist to have presence in the top google searches for news and celebrities.

Kayne withdrew his run for presidency on 4th November by taking to twitter to make his announcement as NME recorded, “by posting an image of a map of the United States with its states shaded in according to those that have thus far been won by fellow candidates Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The caption accompanying the image simply said “WELP”.” Although admitting defeat, it seems Kayne is open to the idea for running for presidency again in 2024.

KANYE 2024 pic.twitter.com/Zm2pKcn12t

Earlier this year, Kayne stated that he wanted to buy Universal Music Group for £25 billion. This news came after open discussions on twitter about artists and their rights to music and it’s ownership. NME noted, “West recently suggested new guidelines for recording and publishing deals in the future of the music industry, discussing contracts, masters and rights issues in the music industry on Twitter and advocating for fairer treatment for all artists.” He then revealed he is given all his artists signed to his G.O.O.D label a 50% share in profits and their master copies returned to them.

Placed at number 2 in the UK google search for artists was Sarah Harding who shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer over the Summer. Last week in an update to NME she said she was “fighting as hard as I possibly can”. In 3rd place was Russel Watson after his ‘I’m a Celebrity’ appearance and Bugzy Malone (real name Aron Davis) snapped up 4th Place after his role in Guy Richie’s film ‘The Gentlemen,’ and his injury in a quad bike accident earlier this year. Grimes was 5th in the UK search list after giving birth with her first child with Elton Musk this year.

A google trends expert, Kirstin Wright said to Music Week, “The 2020 Year in Search lists not only reveal the most popular trends from the past 12 months, but also give insight into the biggest events in the news, politics, sports, entertainment and popular lockdown trends. As people continue to look for information in new and different ways, Google Search keeps evolving to make the world’s information accessible and useful to all.”

ICYMI: @kanyewest, Sarah Harding, @russellthevoice and @TheBugzyMalone top @Google Search results for artists in 2020 https://t.co/EqX34eL89d #Google pic.twitter.com/1fv8LYUIr3

A number of top music photographers have united to raise money selling their prints of well known artists, to raise money for the live crews that have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The renowned photographers include Rankin, Tony McGee and Jill Furmanovsky, who have dedicated 100% of the proceeds to the UK charity Stagehand, who are helping live music crews through tough times.

Prints of the iconic artists being sold include Stormzy, David Bowie, Liam Gallagher, Bob Marley, Arctic Monkeys, The Streets, Tina Turner, Fatboy Slim, Alice Cooper, Sting and many more. Photographer Ed Robinson who organised the funding for ‘Prints For Music,’ hopes to raise over 100k in support of the live music sector.

In an Interview with Music Week Robinson said, “Like so many others, the struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic has affected me deeply on a personal level as well as professionally. I have reached out to the people I know in the music and photographic industries with the simple idea to try to help those who are not getting the support they need to survive this crisis.”

He added, “For many photographers who have been privileged enough to have been given access to photograph these artists, it has only been made possible by the efforts of their production teams. None of these photographs would have been possible without the artists and those who support them. This initiative is our way of giving back in their time of need. It will help preserve their livelihoods and enable the shows to go on in the future.”

The funds that are raised will be offered as grants to out-of-work production and technician stuff in the live music sector. The impact of the coronavirus has left thousands of musicians and industry workers without jobs and struggling. Thousands of gigs, live music venues, concert halls and festivals have had to cancel or reschedule events throughout this year and the next. The UK is the second biggest music industry globally (after the US) and in 2020, Oxford economics reported that music jobs will amount to 77,000, which is a 60% drop compared with 2018.

The report noted that the, “economy would drop by $3bn, with the collapse in live music and touring being the single biggest factor contributing to the decline.” It also stated that live music would be effectively “decimated across the whole of 2020” and that the recovery would take at least three to four years to return to where it was in 2019.

Until the government makes decisions on when live music will be able to return, charities such as ‘Stagehand’ play a big part in helping musicians keep up their hopes of returning to their livelihood. Music Week stated that chair of Stagehands board of trustee’s, Mike Lowe said, “The livelihoods of people working in live music productions has been decimated by the effects of Covid-19. Every day we hear from people who are struggling and Stagehand is raising funds to help those in most need, with the simple aim of helping to keep roofs over heads and food on tables.”

Priced at £95, prints can be purchased from the ‘Prints For Music’ website up until 11th December.

Manchester’s Parklife festival, which is held annually in June, has announced that it will take place from September 11-12th 2021. The event which has an 80,000 capacity, was cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival will take place in the city’s Heaton Park and was originally scheduled for the 12-13th June, but after ongoing concerns that have arisen from the pandemic, this has been pushed back to later in the year.

The 2020 edition which was cancelled in March, was due to host performances by musical talent such as Lewis Capaldi, Skepta, Robyn and Tyler and The Creator. NME reported that after the festival was cancelled, organisers promised a return in 2021 to be ‘Stronger than ever,’ before releasing the June 2021 dates this August.

Music Week have noted the statement given by the festival organisers saying, “With all the good recent news, we’re now looking ahead to 2021, and a return to the fields and good times we all love,” said a statement on the festival’s website. “It’s a party two years in the making that we all deserve. It’s why with that in mind that we have decided to move next year’s festival to the new dates of 11th-12th September, so we can be sure of the good times coming. A huge line-up is almost ready, that we can’t wait to show you in January. Trust us when we say it’s going to be worth the wait.”

The CEO of Live Nation, Michael Rapino told NME in a recent interview that he expects a “robust, outdoor Summer season,” for the live music industry upon it’s return next year. He mentioned that the ‘Download Festival’ and ‘Isle of Wight Festival’ were already ahead in their ticket sales than the previous year. “Importantly, we remain confident that fans will return to live events when it is safe to do so,” he wrote. “Our strongest indicator of demand is that fans are holding on to their tickets, even when given the option of a refund.” He added, “Our expectations for a robust outdoor summer season in 2021 are also reinforced by the two-thirds of fans keeping their tickets for cancelled festivals so they can go to next year’s show, along with strong early ticket sales for festivals in the UK next summer,”

Manchester Parklife is a independent music festival that began in 2010 and was co founded by Sacha Lord. It began in Platt Fields Park in Rusholme, but as the numbers increased with the festivals popularity in 2013, the festival moved to Heaton Park In North Manchester. It is now jointly organised by other groups which include ‘Live Nation’ and ‘The Warehouse Project.’

As the return of 2000 spectators at outdoor sports events is now in place, festival organisers will be keen to know the governments plans for outdoor music events next Summer so that they can begin to put measures in place, to allow a safe environment for the festivals to go ahead. With ticket sales still booming for live music events, it is clear that the public are eagerly waiting for this news, along with those that work in the live music sector.

Robbie Williams has revealed that his for his latest musical project, he is making a new band 25 years after leaving boyband Take That. Robbie shared his latest news with his Instagram followers during a live chat on Thursday. The Daily Mail reported he had announced, “Little project that I’ve got going on with a couple of friends of mine, Flynn Francis and Tim Metcalfe. We’re forming a band everyone. ‘I’ve got songs coming out that will not be under the name of Robbie Williams. I’m gonna do this thing with my friends – form a band.”

He then explained that performances from the band will not be conventional and instead, he’ll rent a place which he’ll use to display his artwork which he created over lockdown and at night, he plans to host and DJ old school raves. He said during the live feed, “I’m gonna do this thing with my friends. Form a band and what I’m gonna do is rent a space, put my art in there. During the day it’ll be a gallery. Then at night I shall be DJing and it will be a musical venue, something the old folks will call a rave.”

He continued by saying, “I’ll be on the espressos. Oh yes I will. Quadruple espresso. Doing it old school. I’m very, very excited about this. I want to do it in Berlin. I also want to do it in Tokyo. I wanna do it in several places. Be fun won’t it? It’s one of them things, it’s a passion project. If some thing hap-pens then great, if not, I’ve just had fun.”

As well as keeping busy with his artwork over lockdown, Robbie has been songwriting and has created more than 50 songs during the period. The Sun newspaper reported that back in June, “he confirmed he had been writing music with his former bandmate Gary via Zoom.” During lockdown back in May, Robbie re-joined his former Take That bandmates, for a one off virtual charity gig.

He revealed his latest news just weeks after his surprise release of his latest Christmas song, “Can’t Stop Christmas,” which is a light hearted, cheeky song which has references to the measures we’ve all faced over the past 12 months due to the pandemic. Robbie mimics zoom, facetime, hand sanitizer and the two metre social distancing rule in his latest track with a line which is written in The Daily Mail, “‘Santa’s on his sleigh, but now he’s two metres away.”

The song begins, “Oh what a miserable year, but what a time to be alive. Sadly some friends disappeared , It’s never been like this before, It feels like we’re at war. So I wonder who’s gonna decide, if we can do the Auld Lang Syne. I wish that I could do what I like, with this family of mine We’re going out of our minds.” Although the unprecedented 2020 in nearly at an end, it seems that Robbie has used his time over lockdown wisely with new creations and exciting plans for future projects for 2021.

Three years from his follow up, UK rapper AJ Tracey has surprised fans with his follow up mixtape, ‘Secure The Bag! 2.’ The multi platinum West London rapper has released a nine track record including features from Swoosh God, Sloan Evans and Grammy nominated Slowthai.

AJ deleted his instagram earlier this year and then revealed a mystery mobile number, asking his fans to text him for more news, keeping them updated with teasers and news about the upcoming EP. He said, “This one’s for the real day 1 Lil tracey / AJ Tracey / GTraceo fans. I made sure the ones who stuck with me get something in return.”

Secure The Bag! 2 OUT NOWhttps://t.co/foblp2hUEG

— aj (@ajtracey) November 29, 2020

The nine track record has taken us back to his roots of Ladbrook Grove with pure grime and transatlantic rap and having grown a huge fanbase over the years, this will no doubt show his growth as a talented rapper. NME reported him saying about his recent success, “Would you believe / I killed the shows overseas / Spread the sound like a disease / brought the world to its knees,” he raps on ‘Yumeko’.”

In 2017 AJ Tracey released his original EP ‘Secure The Bag’ but with his latest release it seems he has cemented himself as one of the UK’s top current rappers. His EP is very versatile and have something for everyone’s musical tastes. NME reviewed the EP saying, “Across the EP, there are moments for every type of AJ Tracey fan. Lean, skittish drum rolls on ‘Hikkimori’ are underpinned with road rap, which slots alongside the taut trap braggadocio trills of ‘Blow My Phone’. ‘No Chucks’ and ‘Triggered’, meanwhile, epitomise Tracey’s quintessential energetic, boastful rap sound.”

Having entered the album chart in 2017 with ‘Secure The Bag,’ AJ Tracy will no doubt be hoping to top his success with his latest record. Tracy then released ‘Butterflies,” feat British singer Not3s, which peaked in the top 20 on the UK singles chart. The self titled album, ‘AJ Tracy’ which was released in 2019 by Warner records and peaked at number 3 on the album charts. His highest charting single was ‘Ladbroke Grove’ which peaked at Number 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

2020 has been AJ’s most successful year yet having released his hit ‘West Ten’ feat Mabel and massive hits including ‘Dinner Guest’ feat Mo Stack, a charity single ‘Times like these,’ and the platinum certified Tik-Tok track ‘Rain’ with Aich. He’s also featured alongside Stormzy on Headie One’s ‘Ain’t It Different,’ which peaked at number 2 in the UK Official Chart.

Having had over one billion streams globally, AJ’s continues to show his versatility and talent as a UK rapper as he continues to push the boundaries and have a clever use of wordplay to captivate his audience. His surprise release will surely please his fans and no doubt be another one in the bag for AJ Tracey.

Tracklist

The garage legend, Craig David is confirmed to perform on this years ‘Top Of The Pops’ Christmas special along with Dua Lipa and MNEK who are also set to star on the pre recorded show which will air at 11.45am, Christmas day on BBC1. He is set to perform his latest hit with rapper KSI ‘Really Love’ on the annual festive chart programme. Although BBC have not yet confirmed the full line up, the singer will headline this year’s festive show.

The Sun newspaper reported an insider for the BBC to of said, “The BBC has gone all out with securing talent for this year’s Top Of The Pops Christmas special and they want it to be bigger and better than ever. Getting Craig to join the line-up was a real coup as he’s such a legend. He’ll be performing his song Really Love with KSI but everyone would love it if there was time for him to throw in one of his classics. It’s been a tough year for the industry so the Beeb is going to make this year’s one-off episode as celebratory as possible.”

Craig rose to fame in 1999 having featured on the single, ‘Re-Rewind,’ by Artful Dodger. His debut solo album ‘Born To Do It’ was released in 2000 from which he had four Top 10 singles, which sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and earnt multi platinum selling status in more than 20 countries. Since then he released another six albums and has not only had success as a singer, but as a rapper, DJ, record producer and song writer, proving he’s an all rounder when it comes to music talent.

Craig released his latest album ‘The Time Is Now’ in 2018, which reached Number 2 in the UK album charts and last month he announced he’s been working on his comeback. The Sun reported him saying, “I’ve been recording loads of music through lockdown. I love to think I can keep singing for ever and I will sing for as long as I can. And I hope the fans welcome that.” His latest track ‘Really Love’ currently sits at number 11 in the Official UK Charts, after it’s 5th week of being released.

BBC have also announced a New Years Eve Special ‘Top Of The Pops’ show for this year. Both shows will be hosted by Ferne Cotton and Clara Amfo who took over from Regi Yates in 2017. Fern admitted to The List that she was worried the show maybe cancelled this year due to the Coronavirus. She said, “I have my fingers crossed that they will find some sort of socially distanced way to make it happen. It’s such a tradition now that you sit down to watch it as a family, and your parents complain how awful pop music is today and then you all go and have your lunch.”

There is no doubt people will be looking forward to the popular iconic music chart show on the festive day to add some Christmas cheer. With the current line up in place, the festive programme will surely not disappoint.

On today’s Official Charts Update, Mariah’s classic Christmas tune climbs to Number 2 and is only 900 sales behind Arianna Grande ‘Positions,’ the current UK Number 1.

Streams of Christmas songs are on a surge this year as Official Charts confirm that their is almost a 44% increase compared with last year, as the nation wishes it’s troubles of 2020 away. The track is one of four festive favourites to enter the top 10 in this weeks official charts. Since 2007, when streaming and downloads were first introduced, the song has re-entered the charts every year leading up to Christmas. When first released in 1994, the song peaked at Number 2 having lost out to East 17’s ‘Stay Another Day,’ for the Number 1 spot. In last last few years the song has peaked at Number 2 in the UK, but we will find out on the Radio 1 show with Chris Moyles on Friday 4th December if it can claim it’s first ever Number 1 position.

On talking about the previous success of the track, Mariah said to Entertainment Weekly, “When it first came out, it was more of a gradual thing. It was popular, but it didn’t have what it has now. I feel like people have grown up with the song and it’s become a part of people’s lives in terms of the way they celebrate the holidays. That makes me feel really proud as someone that loves Christmas so much.” When asked about the writing and recording of the festive favourite, Mariah said to Entertainment Weekly, “I wrote the beginning and the middle on the keyboard in a little house in Upstate New York, in a room by myself. I just started thinking about all things Christmas and growing up as a kid that loves Christmas. I think that’s why it’s such a festive record.”

Mariah is set to release a new version of her song ‘Oh Santa’ this coming Friday 4th December, featuring Arianna Grande and Jennifer Hudson. The song will be played on ‘Apple TV + Special Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas’ which airs the same day. As well as the two stars on her latest single release, other guests will include Tiffany Haddish, Billy Eichner, Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri.

With the streams being on a high increase, it now places the song a high contender for this years ‘Official Christmas Number 1.’ The race will kick off on December 18th and will be announced on BBC Radio 1 on 25th December with Katie Thistleton, which will then be aired on BBC ‘Top Of The Pops’ later on Christmas day. There is no doubt that the success of the song is felt globally as it reached Number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts last year. The ‘Queen Of Christmas’ will be hoping for the same success in the UK charts this year, with the commemorative song that symbolises Christmas Pop Music.

His latest album is his first in over 7 years without boyband ‘Take That’ and is a big-band album mixing big-band jazz, latin and pop and features nine celebrity guests and an 80 piece orchestra. Gary shows off his musicianship in his latest album as a pop star that not only writes his own songs and plays piano, but creatively composes the instrumentation for the album.

Music News has commented on Gary approaching universal with the idea for his album saying, “I went to Universal, the record company, and I said, ‘Listen, I have got this idea but can I just record three songs? I don’t mean demos, I want to put the orchestra on, I want to mix it, I want to get right down the road with three songs’. And so I did: Big string sections, brass sections, the whole thing. I really wanted to know that it was right. Then I played it to them and they just said, ‘Listen, just go and finish the bloody thing. It’s fantastic.'”

David Joseph, boss at Universal Music UK has praised Barlow’s songwriting and the quality of his latest release to Music Week saying, “He’s got an extremely high quality threshold and he clearly knew what record he wanted to make. But it’s one thing knowing what record you want to make and how you want it to feel, the other thing is actually writing and recording a record that lives up to those expectations.”

The album which is made up of 14 songs and features artists such as Michael Bublé, Beverly Knight, Alesha Dixon and James Cordon amongst others. Luckily, The recording for the album the album was finished two weeks before lockdown after the pandemic hit. On explaining how the album came together, The Glasgow Times wrote, “And then it kind of took on another life then and I realised, actually, it’s not just an orchestral record, it’s a record celebrating musicians, that’s what it is.”

He continued to say “And their art, and the way they play together, and I don’t know if you’ve ever had the privilege of being stood near an orchestra, but to stand in the middle while they are playing my music, I mean it’s just thrilling on every level.”
