The two-time Grammy Award-winners Evanescence was formed in the mid-90s and played a pivotal role for women in rock. They found their break in 2003 after releasing their debut album Fallen that spent 43 weeks on the Billboard 100 Chart, selling a staggering 17 million copies worldwide. Their most famous hit single ‘Bring Me To Life’ formed the base for their global success, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as #1 on the U.K Official Singles Chart. Their latest album, Synthesis was released in 2017 through the renowned BMG record label. Along with a couple of new singles, the majority of the album saw the band rework their original hits with assistance from an orchestral ensemble.

With a history spanning two decades, Within Temptation recently signed a worldwide distribution deal with BMG and partnered with Spinefarm Records for their latest album, Resist released February 2019. Debuting in 1997 with Enter, Within Temptation have since released a total of 7 studio albums and with over 3.5 million record sales they have accumulated a global fan base. To add to their list of accolades, their Resist album has reached #1 on the UK Rock Album Chart and also topped the German album charts for the first time, proving their success and influence within their European audience.

Drill is the sub-genre of hip-hop that has been prominent in the U.K music scene over the past few years. Originating in Chicago and pioneered by the likes of a young Chief Keef circa 2012, the genre quickly began to gain popularity due to its often-violent lyrics and raw, authentic delivery more so than traditional hip-hop tracks.

This sound travelled globally thanks to the Internet and mainstream exposure. U.K artists and producers blending with it Grime and Garage to revamp and own this newfound sound. The heavy drops and hard-hitting 808 drums make the beats headbangers and allow for eerie storytelling, jumpy flows and assertive bars.

Arguably becoming one of the top anthems of the summer, Pop Smokes’ ‘Welcome To The Party’ was released in April and has already seen remixes from Nicki Minaj, Skepta and French Montana. Hailing from Brooklyn, Pop Smoke is just one of the number of drill artists to emerge out of New York, other notable New York Drill artists include Sheff G and 22Gz.

His debut project Meet The Woo was released in July and includes the singles ‘Meet The Woo’ and ‘Welcome To The Party.’ It is produced entirely by the British beatmaker 808Melo, an East London native who forms part of the U.K collective Trap House Mob. On this project Pop Smoke takes on the U.K Drill sound, which differs significantly from its Chicago counterpart, his jumpy flow and repetitive bars are reminiscent of some of London’s emerging Drill artists.

Hella UK artists on Trap Music. but you patty’s wanna complain about an American don on a UK Drill Beat

—(@808melo) September 8, 2019

808Melo first came on the scene in 2017 after featuring heavily on Headie One and RVs collaborative mixtape The Jugg. However, 808Melo’s major break came last year as he received production credits on Headie One’s catchy ‘Know Better.’ Now he’s getting the global recognition he deserves thanks to streaming sites such as YouTube, where Pop Smoke says he discovered the young producer. Other prominent figures within the Drill scene with intro tags you can recognise in an instant include M1OnTheBeat, MK The Plug and U.K rap veteran Carnshill.

From being imported from Chicago to exporting a revamped sound around the globe, artists from Australia, North America and Europe have all stated they’ve received their influence from the U.K Drill scene. With Germany’s Gzuz and Australian group ONEFOUR all possessing that Drill aesthetic, it’s safe to say that the U.K have now solidified themselves as pioneers in this game.

Known for his deep-voice and gritty unapologetic lyrics, the Peckham native gained traction after releasing ‘Talkin’ Da Hardest’ in 2007 alongside a string on underground mixtapes in the early 00s which took the UK by storm. Despite gaining national recognition in the 00s, Giggs was still a target of the now-scrapped ‘Form 696’ which gave the Metropolitan Police the authority to shut down events they deemed ‘unsafe’. This didn’t stop fans from wanting to see the rapper perform live and due to popular demand, he organised a ‘secret’ concert where the venue was undisclosed and transportation arranged for fans to attend the gig. Fast-forward a decade and Giggs’ fanbase has reached international waters and has achieved the success that speaks for itself.

Ed Sheeran released his fourth studio album entitled No. 6 Collaborations Project on 12th July. Unsurprisingly, the album debuted at #1 in 16 countries including the US Billboard 200 and the UK Official Albums Chart, becoming his fourth #1 album in the UK. ‘Take Me Back To London’ features the grime king of this generation, Stormzy who has been a frequent collaborator of Ed Sheeran’s even remixing his hit single ‘Shape Of You’ which premiered live at the 2017 Brit Award Ceremony.

This remix sees Sir Spyro revamp the instrumental and recruit grime heavyweights Jaykae and Aitch to represent the two biggest cities outside of the capital. The track opens up with Ed Sheeran singing the inspirational chorus before Stormzy spits in his usual assertive flow, describing his growth as an artist whilst representing his area “We were younger then, now we’re unified, South London boys get you crucified.” Ed jumps in with bars of his own, silencing his critics and proving that he’s not just a pop singer but a talented versatile artist. He too speaks of his growth but explains that he’s also down to earth “Give me a packet of crisps and my pint, hit my friends up, go straight to the pub, cos I haven’t been home in time.”

Stormzy and Ed Sheeran go back-to-back with bars before the second chorus commences. Jaykae cuts the chorus short as he represents for his hometown Birmingham, his braggadocio verse speaks on his come up and the luxury items he has acquired but can also be found in a pub. With eyes being on London when it comes to grime, Jaykae unapologetically lets you know where he’s from “Rep blues when I’m here, it’s Brum, fam are you dumb.” Since coming onto the scene, Aitch has continually expressed he’s not a trap rapper and lets his talent speak for itself whilst accumulating a strong fan base. Reiterating this statement on the track with his jumpy flow he raps, “I came for first place, made a change to get paid, fam I stayed in my lane and came with that flame.”

Directed by Manchester’s KC Locke and shot around London, Manchester and Birmingham, the creative visuals capture the essence of British culture. The video begins with Stormzy riding shotgun as Ed Sheeran drifts a Rolls Royce Cullinan in an empty field, they wear matching grey tracksuits from Stormzy’s latest collaboration with Adidas. They perform their verses standing back-to-back in a high-end suit store whilst a tailor measures them up for a perfect fit.

Jaykae starts his verse surrounded by a circle of biker boys riding a mixture of ATV’s and dirt bikes. The scenes cut between him, Aitch and Ed drinking and having a good time on a red interior tour bus to the Birmingham rapper standing amongst friends at the pool table of a pub. Jaykae’s verse ends abruptly as Aitch is seen toasting Ed Sheeran whilst they sit side by side in a traditional English café drinking a cup of milky tea. Given Ed’s global exposure these scenes all encompass British culture and give his international fans a taste of how the U.K do it.

Since its release, grimes godfather Wiley has taken aim at Ed Sheeran labelling him a “culture vulture” for jumping on a grime track for “exposure” that’s clearly unneeded given his current success. Stormzy was quick to respond to these comments stating, “Ed been doing this from early, been a real one from early, can’t question that.” Jaykae also came to Ed’s defence saying, “I’ve looked up to you for over a decade. But you’re moving like a wasteman” whilst tweeting a clip of his verse on the track where he raps “You could be 40, you don’t wanna war me, end of story, you’re gonna get spun” clearly sending shots at the grime OG.

I’m happy for you Wiley. I tell people all the time recently that you look like your in a good space after looking like you was having a mid life crisis on social media.

American heavy-metal band, GWAR have announced they will be bringing their Use Your Collusion tour to the U.K and Europe later this year. Canada’s Voivod will join the band as the main supporting act throughout the entirety of the tour, forming a heavy-metal supergroup.

Starting in Germany on 22nd November, the 21-day tour will pass through 11 European countries and includes 5 dates in the U.K. In true GWAR fashion, expect to experience highly offensive lyrics, gore and out of this world costumes as they aim to take over Europe from beyond the galaxy this winter. Speaking on the upcoming tour, guitarist Brent Purgason a.k.a Pustulus Maximus states, “GWAR has waited long enough to terrorise youth across the pond. What better way to spend a winter than pillaging and copulating across Europe.”

Hailing from Richmond, Virginia the satirical band was founded in 1984 and formed through a creative collective of artists, filmmakers and musicians called Slave Pit Inc. who manage to bring their extraordinary vision to life. The visual aesthetics encompass that of mythological alien warriors combined with deep-rooted sexual fetishes. During their shows, they touch on everything from political satire to acts of controversial scatology. Their last album and supporting the tour is The Blood Of Gods which was released back in 2017 and peaked at #13 on the Billboard US Top Hard Rock Albums.

In 2014 the group’s frontman Dave Brockie passed away at the age of 50 due to acute heroin toxicity. Being the last of the original-founding members, the band keeps the GWAR heritage alive by using a continual rotation of musicians from Slave Pit Inc. For their U.K and European tour the band will consist of the following artists:

Michael Bishop as The Berserker Blóthar: Lead Vocals
Casey Orr as Beefcake the Mighty: Bass Guitar, Vocals
Brent Purgason as Pustulus Maximus: Lead Guitar, Vocals
Mike Derks as BälSäc the Jaws ‘o Death: Rhythm Guitar, Vocals

Rapman has collaborated with The Premier League to return with a special edition of his annual wrap up series, giving us a brief history of what is known as the greatest league in the world. Releasing just in time for the start of the 2019/20 season, Rapman wins the respect of football fans globally with this creative track.

Over this vocalised rap instrumental, Rapman summarises the leagues legacy. He takes us through the most iconic players, goals and moments to have taken place since its unveiling back in 1992. Along with dropping statistics and addressing the battle of the GOAT, he lets it be known who his personal favourite is. Rapman concludes the track with a positive message expressing the unity that football brings in the midst of escalated bigotry, “All different classes, all different races, no room for prejudice, no room for racists, no homophobics anti-abrasive, this is everybody’s game, rainbow laces.”

The minimal video sees Rapman perform in front of a plain backdrop, which alters to resemble the colours of the Premier League logo. Memorable football flashbacks are reeled off to accompany Rapman’s bars, including Kevin Keegan’s legendary ‘Love It’ rant, David Beckham’s 1996 halfway line goal and Sir Alex Ferguson’s plethora of trophy celebrations.

Rapman first hit the scene in 2014 after releasing his hard-hitting, three-part series, ‘Shiro’s Story.’ His ability to effortlessly tell a story using rhymes caught the attention of hip-hop superstar Jay-Z who signed him to his Roc Nation label in November 2018. Rapman declared that he has teamed up with global distributors, Paramount to release a movie spin-off of the hit series entitled ‘Blue Story.’ Adding to his list of talents, he recently directed the visuals to Krept & Konan’s controversial track ‘Ban Drill’ which led the rappers to debate the topic of the genre at the British parliament.

The Premier League is the most-watched sporting event in the globe, in an effort to keep innovating and generate appeal amongst the younger generation they’ve teamed up with arguably the best storyteller in the U.K. This shows the influence that the British hip-hop scene has on the mainstream. Hitting the official charts, obtaining Royal recognition and featuring on prime time television is all proof of the impact that this culture has.

Kojo Funds recruits Nigerian star Wizkid for their new track entitled ‘I Like’ releasing just in time for carnival season. The East London native has been excelling since the release of his 2018 debut album, Golden Boy which included bangers such as ‘Stallin’’ and ‘Dun Talkin’’ and peaked at #40 on the U.K Album Charts.

Presenting his afro-swing style, Kojo Funds brings through the feel-good vibes with this track as we come to the end of summertime. The melodic chorus sees Kojo expressing his adoration for a female, providing her with the option to call when she needs. As Wizkid supplies his trademark vocalised flow, he keeps to the lustful theme “Baby call me when you’re lonely, say I’m liking your body girl put it all on me.”

Directed by Dir. Lx, the visuals see the two artists posted in a luxurious villa at an unknown exotic location. Equipped with an indoor pool and a scenic beach view, they are accompanied by a diverse group of bikini-clad models, which represent the aesthetic of this summer banger. Edging away from the traditional excessive alcohol and jewellery, Dir. Lx captures the singers dripped in high-end designer fashion in this minimalist video.

Be sure to catch Kojo Funds performing live at the following locations this year:

21/09/19 – Tokyo World Festival – Bristol
15/11/ – O2 Academy – Glasgow

After being sentenced to 13 years in prison for shooting at undercover police in 2013, Rimz a.k.a Rimzee is fresh home and showing us what we’ve all been missing out on. It’s only been a month since Rimzee has had his taste of freedom, but in that time he has already released the visuals for his single ‘Go Time,’ teased the sequel to his Upper Clapton Dream mixtape and has also inked a branding deal with U.K streetwear brand Benjart.

Over this vocalised instrumental, the East London native cleverly uses every bar as an opportunity to insert his creative metaphors, “More street than Harley, more B than Cardi, Loubs match the car seat.” Along with hard-hitting bars, Rimzee addresses his life of luxury whilst also providing an insight into the stresses of prison life. This track solidifies Rimzee’s place back in the music game and the melodic chorus demonstrates that “Back to where I started, now it’s go time.”

The visuals, directed by Suave begin with a black and white video reel of scenes from Rimzee’s previously released music videos, from his debut freestyle in 2010 to his last video entitled ‘Everyday (Remix).’ Newspaper clippings related to the shooting along the incriminating CCTV footage of the incident is also shown, before cutting to a clip of his friends welcoming him as he exits Stanford Hill prison on his first day out.

Acknowledging the set back of his time in prison, Rimzee then embraces his freedom and gives us a glimpse into his usual lavish lifestyle. Shot in a chic mansion equipped with an outdoor pool, Rolls Royce’s and champagne Rimzee performs his first verse alongside a straight-faced model. For his second verse, we see Rimz posted in a narrow London street sporting a Benjart tracksuit accompanied by more cars and flashier jewellery.

Giggs released his fifth studio album entitled Big Bad… back in February. The critically acclaimed project featured big names such as Jadakiss, French Montana and Swizz Beatz. He solidified himself on the U.K Album Chart for four weeks and peaked at #6. But it’s not the commercial success that’s the milestone, according to The Official Charts Big Bad… is now recognised on ‘The Official Top 20 best-selling cassettes in the UK of 2019 so far’ – that’s right, cassettes. In addition, he’s currently the only rapper present on the chart, amongst Prodigy, Lewis Capaldi and The 1975 who have the #1 spot.

Regarded as one of the pioneers of U.K gangsta rap, Giggs has been putting out hits for over a decade releasing his first mixtape in 2005. With 13 underground mixtapes, 5 albums and 5 compilation mixtapes he has earned the title of a living legend in the U.K. From working with the likes of DJ Whoo Kid, B.o.B and most recently Drake, Giggs is no stranger to artists from across the pond.

Serving as the technological follow up to vinyls, the cassette tape was developed and released by Philips in 1962. Like with any product, consumers are always looking for easy accessibility so in 1979 Sony released the first portable cassette player also known as the Walkman, which quickly became a necessity for music lovers worldwide.

In 2019 we see the resurgence of the old-time classic, as consumers continue to indulge in vintage accessories. Currently, cassette tape sales are at the highest they’ve been since 2004, in the U.K sales have skyrocketed by 112% year-on-year in the first half of 2019, with 36,000 cassettes units sold. It’s safe to say that’s its the new collectable product and we wait to see what the next vintage trend in music will be.
