Kneecap have teamed up with Tom Morello on a new single called ‘Unconquered’, and it sounds explores every bit of rock and roll from the two acts, as fans of both would hope.
The track appears on Morello’s new solo album ‘Everyone Gets Everything They Want‘, which came out on Friday the 25th of September. The guitarist, known for his time in Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, describes it as his first solo rock album and his 22nd release overall.
The new track is accompanied by a music video featuring Morello ripping his guitar and clips of Kneecap hyping up the crowd at concerts, making for a lively act for the energetic track. You can watch the music video here!
‘Unconquered’ pairs Morello’s jagged guitar tone with electronic drums, while Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap trade fast verses in both Irish and English. The track is a blend of hip hop, hard rock and electronic that first made Morello famous, and it builds towards an impressive guitar solo.
Speaking to NME before the album arrived, Morello said the song is about a spirit of resistance that survives no matter how heavy the crackdown. He pointed to places as varied as university campuses, refugee camps and concert stages from Dublin to Detroit. His aim, as he explained, was to make a single guitar sound like a whole uprising.
Morello has admired the Belfast trio for years and said that he became a fan right from the start and watched the Kneecap film long before the controversy that followed the band. What drew him in was how openly they stand alongside oppressed people, particularly utilising their fan base and public image when they’re on stage, he feels a strong kinship with.
When he first got in touch, he laid out three rules for the song. It had to be called ‘Unconquered’ and it needed a huge hook, and it had to go down a huge scene at festivals. By his own account, all three boxes were ticked on this track.
Elsewhere on the album, Morello is joined by System Of A Down singer Serj Tankian and the band Beartooth, as well as, his teenage son Roman riffs to five songs. Morello says the record was shaped by the growing spread of authoritarianism around the world, and he calls it “a record for everyone who’s had enough”.
Kneecap have since announced a huge world tour!
UK and Ireland dates begin in Southampton on November 28th 2027 and wrap up at Dublin’s 3Arena on December 16th.
