London born singer-songwriter Olivia Dean recently teased her new album and what her main inspiration was. To the surprise of many, the artist admitted her next release was widely inspired by iconic Sex And The City‘s main character, Carrie Bradshaw. Indeed, the character served in the writing of ‘The Art Of Loving’ coming out this September.
In a recent interview for the Bizarre Column of The Sun, she said: “I’d never seen Sex And The City before, and started watching it from the beginning. I have been living my Carrie moment, her influence will be there.”
Sharing some more, she also revealed how some songs of the upcoming album focus on relationships and the struggle that might come with them at times. “‘Something In Between’ is about when you are between being with somebody and not, and you are like, ‘I don’t want to just have you in my life, like now we are not supposed to talk?’”
Dean has been known to be quite transparent about her experiences with love, even embracing the ‘Messy’ side of it, with her debut album back in 2023. In an interview with Ones To Watch, she opened up about how the record talked about how it can feel to fall in love again after a hard, messy breakup. It’s a messy road and I’ve become quite hardened. My heart has got a hard case.”
The album featured songs such as ‘Dive, ‘The Hardest Part’ and ‘Ladies Room’, the latter being inspired by a song she overheard on a night out in the toilets.
Olivia explained: “I was just in the cubicle peeing and I overheard this lady talking. She was like, ‘Girls, if I could give you any advice, never go out with a man who’s 20 years your senior.’ I recorded her because I thought it was hilarious. The song originally had her voice at the beginning, but it’s illegal to record people. I was in the toilet queue before, so I don’t know how to find her. Wherever you are out there, you’re my inspiration!”
On top of being open about her love life and experiences, the singer is also very transparent about her mental health and how therapy has been a huge help in her life to help her overcome feelings of self-doubts. She shared: “There was a big chunk of time where I was in a pattern of being very self-critical, to the point where you just feel so shit about yourself, comparing your beginning point to everyone else’s finished product. That is just the thief of joy. I was honestly in quite a depressive state. I got out of it: I’ve been doing therapy and learning how I function and what environment I function best in. Therapy is awesome.”
‘The Art Of Loving’ the brand new album by Olivia Dean will be available on all major platforms on September 26 2025.
