On Monday June 30, Green Day kicked a fan off stage when he started playing Oasis’s ‘Wonderwall’ at their show at Luxexpo in Luxemburg. The band invited a fan from the crowd to play guitar on their show’s closing track ‘Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)’. Instead of the alternative punk rock hit, the fan proceeded to play the start of ‘Wonderwall’ before he was quickly removed from the stage.

The band have been regularly known to invite the crowd onto stage for this show closer, but have never experienced such an impromptu disruption. As the fan began to strum the intro to ‘Wonderwall’, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong began to sing the first line of his track before realising what was happening. Armstrong hastily exclaimed “Oh, fuck me” and seized the guitar from him. The fan was gently ushered back into the crowd as Armstrong added “nice try” before proceeding to play the guitar part himself.
Footage of the moment has gone viral across social media platforms sparking vast amounts of discussion as to whether it was a light-hearted prank or disrespectful. The recording reached Liam Gallagher himself who responded to a video shared on X: “Best song of the night”.

This isn’t the first time the two bands have made headlines together. Earlier in Green Day’s career, Noel Gallagher accused the punk-trio of stealing the musical arrangement of ‘Wonderwall’ in their track ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’. More can be read about this here.
‘Good Riddance’ has become one of the most revered tracks from Green Days expansive catalogue and is often the concluding songs of the live sets. In an interview with People Magazine in 2024, Armstrong discussed the enduring power of the track: “It’s a simple love song on a guitar, and it has ended up being played at graduations and bar mitzvahs; it’s at funerals and weddings. It’s wild what it turned into”.
Green Day are continuing their international tour throughout Europe before performing throughout North and South America until late September. This isn’t the first time the band’s track ‘Good Riddance’ has made UK news this year – earlier in the year the song made headlines when a local Liverpool musician realised he was playing a cover of the song in front of Billie Joe Armstrong himself. This moment comes just days before the first night of the highly anticipated Oasis reunion tour. The tour begins in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Friday July 4. The band will perform throughout Europe until late August when they head to North America before eventually performing dates in Asia, Australia, and South America.
