The Birmingham based alt-jazz outfit, Slugman, have released their second single, ‘I Dream, A Ground City Slug’.
To those outside of the Birmingham music scene, the name Slugman probably rings a little hollow, however to those in the know, the name is met with a resounding recognition of one of the scene’s most exciting new bands.
The band took to instagram this week to announce the latest release, after a long period of anticipation since the debut.
Their new single is the most recent offering since the band’s debut single ‘To Feel Like Me’, which was released in December 2024. Recorded at Wolverhampton studio The Cellar Rooms, ‘I Dream, A Ground City Slug’ is an extension of the band’s mixture of different styles; alt-jazz, post-punk and art-rock are all genres that would be applicable in describing both of Slugman’s releases.
Slugman share members Will Harris and Charlie O’connor with a punk band from the same region, by the name of ‘Pulsar’.
Members Will, Charlie, Niamh, Toby and Josh recently performed a stripped back, almost tiny-desk-like live session for Room 2 Recordings, performing their debut single ‘To Feel Like Me’ and other unreleased tracks.
Birmingham has long been one of the UK’s epicentres for arts and culture, whether it be ska, heavy metal or the recent surge of punk bands emanating from the city’s musical landscape, and like many other big cities within the UK, Birmingham offers a wide range of opportunity for musicians to do what they do best, with venues like The Sunflower Lounge, Tilt and Dead Wax all hosting bands on an almost-nightly basis.
Slugman, on many occasion, have proven to have a bit of a cult following within the city, playing sold out shows across various Birmingham venues.
Tickets for Slugman’s future shows can be purchased from their LinkTree.
